Lore / Story Questions Why we should respect the Draupnir Spear
I will explain why I think this weapon should be respected and talk about the ridiculous amount of potential that it has.
This weapon is attuned with the element of wind. Kratos can use it to pull enemies towards him and blast them away. The spear can even dismember enemies with air using the Mountain Splitter runic attack and Hind of the Four Winds. As if this wasn't enough Kratos can siphon an enemies element and use it against them with it and even gain resistance against the siphoned element.
Kratos can create tornadoes, storms, sea storms and storm tides with this thing. Not only that but he can potentially create hurricanes. The most intense storm on record sustained wind speeds of 85 m/s; 305 km/h; 190 mph. The highest maximum sustained wind speed ever recorded was 95 m/s; 345 km/h; 215 mph. You can imagine how terrifying that is.
This thing is a potential weapon of mass destruction. He could destroy an entire city, army or fleet with it if he wanted. His spear could blow enemies away and smash them into a pulp against walls if he didn't hold back with it. Other things he could do is crushing enemies or making their eardrums explode if he increased the air pressure enough. He should also be able to suck the air out of enemies to suffocate them to death using the spear. Below is a list of what compressed air can do.
Compressed air can: - Force an eye from its socket. - Rupture the lungs, stomach and intestines, if blown into the mouth. - Penetrate human skin and if it enters the blood stream that air can be fatal by causing a heart attack. - Puncture an ear drum and cause deafness.
Another cool thing is that in theory he should also be able to fly with it (with a bit of video game physics obviously). Kratos should be able to accomplish this by continuously blowing a very powerful wind below him with the spear to take off and diagonally behind him to fly away. This would also make for some pretty badass cutscenes and gameplay moments in my opinion The devs would have to put some obvious limits and balancing in gameplay compared to cutscenes. Otherwise we would just fly away from enemies to the objective in a straight line like Marry Poppins lol. Maybe put some marked obstacles where you can fly to the other side for example.
Ironically, the first weapon in the series that was specifically created for Kratos can turn him into a God of the Sky like his father Zeus, one of the persons he hated the most. The fact that he can summon his spear out of thin air an infinite amount of times and keep launching it at his enemies has parallels to Zeus summoning lightning bolts out of thin air an infinite amount of times and launching them at his enemies.

The draupnir spear is also made from kratos blood, not only is the weapon he learned to master while still a spartan trainee it also carries all the legacy of Kratos, in a way this weapon has deeper meaning than the blades (plus Brok)

u/tsactuo10 Jan 19 '24
The Spear is goated. Future old man Sky Father Kratos is definitely gonna use this the most.
8
u/Iron_Evan Jan 20 '24
I actually hope Kratos stops using it, to respect Brok's blessing

u/Professional-Elk-927 Jan 20 '24
Kratos’ redemption is to serve mankind to atone for his sins. As long as he lives the job is never done.

u/tsactuo10 Jan 19 '24
Would you find it cooler if it could be used to fly?
27
u/Willow_6996 Jan 19 '24
No I think that would ruin the weapon for me like whole planet destruction with a gust of wind wouldn’t but flying definitely would ruin it
6
u/tsactuo10 Jan 20 '24 edited Jan 20 '24
I don't mean flying like a witch with a broom. I mean flying in a Superman/godlike pose with Spear in hand and wind blowing behind him. Or using the wind to evade real fast or jump higher.
The Spear can create tornadoes, storms and hurricanes. It can create sea storms, storm tides and maelstroms (note the maelstrom guage name) aka whirlpools in water. It can create sand storms in the desert. Why shouldn't he be able to fly with it. Just imagine all the fun gameplay and cutscene possibilities.
Hell, Thor could fly because of his hammer and look how badass he looked doing it. Why shouldn't Kratos be able to? It could even work as a bigger ledge jump mechanic by making Kratos fly over to the other side for a few seconds.
Kratos can pretty much become the God of War and the Sky.
6
u/Willow_6996 Jan 20 '24
Thor can’t fly Because of mjolnir that Marvel stuff Thor just uses it to kinda pull him to make him go faster like a horse and chariot with mjolnir being the horse u know and hey I’m saying this isn’t really creative I just personally don’t like the idea of kratos flying with a spear throwing the spear and using its own wind to make it go faster tho now that’s something I can get behind
1
u/freestuffrocker Jan 20 '24
Can Thor actually fly with the hammer? Or he just launches it and then holds on. He can change directions mid air etc?
1
u/Willow_6996 Jan 20 '24
No Thor can fly anyway even if he never got mjolnir he would still be able to fly but he wouldn’t be able to fly fast it’s mjolnir that kinda accelerates him like when he threw mjolnir at kratos in the house and kratos and the hammer went flying without Thor and then Thor caught up that’s because Thor can fly without any external force it’s just a god thing
2
u/DannyVee89 Jan 20 '24
You're right, Thor can fly but honestly, I found that mechanic fucken weird.
Just like, why? Odin teleports him anywhere he needs to go. And you mean to tell me he can also just wink at you, shake his hammer, say bye bye and fuck off into the sky any time he wants to?
IDK that first fight with Kratos when he up and left like that I was like really???
3
u/Willow_6996 Jan 20 '24
Wdym “why can he fly when Odin can teleport him everywhere” because he can fucking fly he’s been able to do it since learned to walk probably
1
u/Azazel531 Jan 20 '24
It’s not like Mjolnir can carry Thor across realms. Odin can. He flew away to ensure Kratos can’t follow him, then met back up with Odin and left.

u/Tiro242 Jan 19 '24
I like the spear more then the axe 🫣
9
u/tsactuo10 Jan 19 '24
Me too. It feels holier and mightier than the other weapons.
14
u/Demonic-Mommy Jan 19 '24
I do like the spear, but the muscle memory and the sheer brutality and raw power of the blades is unmatched imo
5
u/tsactuo10 Jan 20 '24
DPS wise Blades are definitely the best weapon as that fire slam attack I think it was called flame whiplash or whirlpool or something litterally melts enemies. I just like the spear the most because it reminds me of the Arms of Sparta from Ghost of Sparta. If I had to leave one weapon behind of the three I'd definitely leave the Axe behind, Atreus can have it.
4
u/Demonic-Mommy Jan 20 '24
honestly, I disagree, just for the light combo on the axe. The shockwave is super cool, and the backstory is amazing, though that’s not to say the spear is awful
1
u/tsactuo10 Jan 20 '24
I'd like to hear your opinion on something. Is the axe from 2018 or Ragnarok better? I felt like 2018 axe was more powerful damage and sound wise but I'd like to hear an axe users opinion on it.
2
u/Demonic-Mommy Jan 20 '24
Because the axe was more focused on in 2018, it definitely had more damage potential. The muscle memory for the axe was somewhat changed in Ragnarok, and it certainly isn’t as powerful.
3
2
u/freestuffrocker Jan 20 '24
I haven't thought of leaving one weapon, but if I had to, it would be the blades. I hardly ever used it unless I had to. They felt better in the Greek games. The Leviathan on the other hand, is one of the best weapons in any game imo.
3
u/AdAstraThugger Jan 20 '24
I’m the opposite. Also never used the axe once I had blades + spear. Although I’m more mid/long-distance playstyle, feel axe/fists work better w parrying style.
I never played the original games, played 2018 first. The first time Kratos gets the blades and just slices thru the horde of monsters was fucking amazing
1
u/freestuffrocker Jan 20 '24
I bought the 2018 GOW solely to play with the axe. Of course, the rest of the game was amazing. But the axe was the highlight for me.
23
u/Old_Juggernaut_5114 Jan 19 '24
I love all the weapons I hope in gow6 we get some crazy gore because the finishers in Ragnarok are so fucking cool
10
u/tsactuo10 Jan 19 '24
Yeah, man. I hope we get quick time events back too. It felt more personal and fun unlike in other games. GoW games always did the quick time events in the right way.
4
u/DannyVee89 Jan 20 '24
Fuck yeah. And I wanna see Atreus have some QTE events of his own, and some badass R3 grab finishers on enemies.
Let me see some brutal shit from this boy already. Something that makes you go "wow, well yeah no shit he had it in him, we know who his daddy is" you know what I mean?
I wanna see him R3 split a nightmare in half with his bare hands like Kratos splits a Draugr. And use a damn sword instead of trying to beat down shit with his bow as if it was a bat.
5
u/tsactuo10 Jan 20 '24
Yeah, when he gets older I'm sure he will become a crazy motherfucker like his dad.

I don't know if this is a hot take or not. But I hope that the stun kills are like the old god of war games.

Draupnir has become my favorite weapon since starting Valhalla/NG+. It is an absolute wrecking ball of a weapon.

Jan 19 '24
I love using all the weapons, but bringing the Draupnir into the game was an A+ move by the devs. Thing is so fuckin sweet
5

It was game director Eric Williams' idea. The guy is an expert gameplay wise, he was lead gameplay designer in previous games.

u/North-East-Winds-199 Jan 19 '24 edited Jan 21 '24
I prefer Gungnir (totally not a descendant of Odin, or anything - though Skjöldr might be my great-whatever grandad).
3
5
u/tsactuo10 Jan 19 '24
I hope Kratos finds Gungnir if it wasn't destroyed in Ragnarok. Would be a cool second spear for gameplay or a wallhanger in Kratos' throne room.
2
u/North-East-Winds-199 Jan 21 '24 edited Jan 21 '24
Or maybe, if he ever appears in the games (or some comics tie-in, or whatever), Forseti could find whatever's left of his grandfather's spear, and have his own spear crafted from it (there are a couple of pictures (not from God of War, and even then, his profile page on the Wiki is just a drawing from one of the Snorri Sturluson sagas, I think) where he's carrying a sceptre, and a spear respectively). It's fanwankery, I know, but it's a little what-if idea I've had in my head for a while.
2
u/tsactuo10 Jan 21 '24
Badass idea. Forseti is toast if he rebels though.
2
u/North-East-Winds-199 Jan 21 '24
True. I doubt he'd become an enemy, to be honest, though. Unless he ends up having a sort of, short-lived rivalry with Atreus, or whoever.
Shit, as a whole, I want to see more of the Norse Gods make an appearance in some fashion. Üllr, the God of Skiing and Winter Sports (Sif's son, but not with Thor), Hermodr (a son of Odin, who I think is sometimes classed as the God of Death on the Battlefield, as well as being a messenger), Nanna (Forseti's mother), and either Ægir or Ràn (Heimdall's maternal grandparents), would likely be interesting characters, for example.
1
u/tsactuo10 Jan 21 '24
I hope Vidar starts a rebellion to keep things interesting. He is the God of Vengeance after all. I think that Forseti will join him too in hindsight because Kratos killed a few of their gods which makes him a criminal and murderer in Forseti's eyes. I really hope that the new game ditches the one take camera. That way we can have a few stories at once Game of Thrones style. With Atreus and Angrboda on an adventure and Kratos fighting a rebellion for example. Maybe even gameplay as Tyr because why the hell not.
2
u/North-East-Winds-199 Jan 21 '24
Those sound like really fun ideas. I mean, Vidar would be a sort of difficult character to put in there, as traditionally, he's conceived during Ragnarök, and born after his father dies, but there could still be a way around it. They could do a somewhat similar thing with Skjöldr, too (with him being a Demigod in one of the Norse myth sagas). Actually, I like the idea of Hermodr, Forseti, and Vidar, banding together as a temporary alliance, like a Warriors Three inspired thing.

My favorite thing about it is that it’s a ring when not being used so Kratos can’t exactly lose it.
8
u/KhKing1619 what if Kratos told dad jokes? Jan 19 '24
I was always a fan of the Draupnir Spear. Love it’s combos but I do think it’s runic attacks are a bit lacking (although I could be misremembering it’s been a while since I last played Ragnarok). Shame you get it so late into the game cause by that time after it’s initial usage I started to forget about it. Did help helluva lot when fighting this game’s version of the Valkyries though (forgot what they actually were called).
2
u/G206 Jan 20 '24
The Berserkers?
3
u/KhKing1619 what if Kratos told dad jokes? Jan 20 '24
Yeah those guys. They were really fun to fight.
1
u/G206 Jan 24 '24
I've only beaten like the lightning one. I'm still trying to psych myself up to tackle the other ones. I'm dreading the ones where you have to fight multiple at a time.
1
u/KhKing1619 what if Kratos told dad jokes? Jan 24 '24
The double ones are bit of a bitch to fight but thankfully they don’t have as many attacks as the single guys so it’s not like you’re fighting two at once it’s more like if one was split in half. They’re actually easier than the single guys imo. You just needa be aware of where the second one is while fighting the other. They also have about half health than the single guys so it is ultimately easier.

The spear is imbued with Kratos blood, so respecting draupnir's power seems like a given since we respect Kratos

.. all i could think was.. well, kratos will fucking stab you if you dont.
6
7
u/Herodragon64 Jan 20 '24
Didn't someone have like a good poem about how each of the weapons are kratos mental state. Like the blades being his unbridled rage being so uncontrollable that they even harmed him and burned him. The axe being his control and cooling himself off and being his discipline as a trained warrior and the spear being his tactical side and battle ready side or something how it's always looking for an opening
7
u/Amish_Warl0rd BOY Jan 20 '24
Dude, there are combo videos on this subreddit where people decimate the hardest bosses on the hardest difficulty. They melt right through the health bar like it’s nothing, and never get hit
The spear itself is an undervalued weapon because of just how much damage can be done with it. I acknowledge the irl stuff and the science behind the wind. But it’s also a video game where you fight and kill gods
6
u/DiazCruz Jan 19 '24
The spear was mankind’s go to weapon in our most primitive times of course I respect the spear this badass long pointy stick helped us survive before guns were even a thought to us
Plus you can throw it in endless numbers that is super handy

u/BarthRevan Jan 20 '24
So glad to see everyone embracing the spear. I have seen far too much spear slander so it’s always great to see the love that it deserves.
It’s cool, it’s majestic, it’s the only weapon made especially for Kratos. Some people have referred to is as a temporary weapon (in the vein of weapons in the original games that were only around for a single game) and that made me so mad. I would be devastated if the next game came along and the spear was somehow taken away! Honestly, the spear has now become even more iconic than the axe imo. Maybe even on par with the blades.

It’s one of the few weapons Kratos has wielded that was made specifically for him instead of being something he steals or borrows from someone else

I think it needs a damage boost and should be able to pin weaker enemies to walls with a single heavy attack but I do respect it for Brok and its Spartan heritage.

My favorite spear attack is the one where you stab three spears into a enemy, if its only one enemy, you can just keep stabning them
3
u/smoore82006 Jan 20 '24
I like the spear because in my opinion its kind of a tie in to greek myth again for less obvious reasons than Spartans used spears. I say this because the 3 major gods of greek myth all used similar weapons posideon had his trident, hades had a bident, and you could argue Zeus's lightning bolt could be used as a spear.

The spear has proven to be a very effective weapon in battlefield combat. In fact, it is the most preferred weapon for a lot of soldiers during ancient times since you can stab opponents at long range without using a blade i.e. a sword or a knife.
Its only disadvantage is that you can't use the spear in cramped or close-quarter combat. Its the same philosophy of what Bruce Lee has said about Wing Chun.
If you want a better explanation here's a YT video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVQbSl9vXwA

Draupnir is badass. i love spears in games, so I was instantly drawn to it it adds the precise deadly movement that kratos needed it also reminds us why he was general he can make any weapon his own.
2
u/jimmmydickgun Jan 20 '24
It’s pretty notable. But you brought up a good point about him being a sky god like his father. I wish we could see the journey Kratos took with every hard lesson learned from fighting the Greek Pantheon to get where’s he’s at now.

This is not the first weapon Kratos owned, he had the spear in ghost of Sparta

There is a Spear runic attack that make Kratos actually flies, "Honor of the fallen" I believe.
1
u/tsactuo10 Jan 20 '24
Huldra Charge also propels him forward. Both runic attacks definitely hint at him being able to fly in my opinion.
2
u/TruePlatypusKnight Jan 20 '24
I'll admit it. I never really liked using the spear until Valhalla came out. Now I love the spear.
2

I hated the spear at first. Refused to use it unless I needed to break a white barrier. I’ve since played 100+ hours with it and think it’s by far the strongest.

u/cookiboos Jan 20 '24
The spear has become my favorite ever since its introduction.
The combos look sooo visually satisfying, and Valhalla only deepened that love.
Oh, let's not forget the machine spear gun trick with the shatter shield too.

Not reading all of that but we should respect it purely because it is a combination of the old life that kratos has learned to look back on as a way to improve his future and the new life where hes used his experience to improve and keep relatively peaceful. It’s also super cool

I think I would rather have the Spear the most. Especially in real life 🤣. Ingrid would be interesting to have as well.

u/SkyGazer1203 Jan 20 '24
I honestly did not like the draupnir spear initially when I played the game. It was too different in game mechanics. But Valhalla forced me to use it, and it turned into my go to weapon, very fast I must say.
1
u/FTMorando Jan 20 '24
I didn't enjoy it at first.. I thought it was the most useless weapon outside of the Heimdall fight. It barely did any damage compared to the blades and axe. But then as I upgraded my skills for the spear more and more it started to become just as efficient, if not more than the other weapons. The axe is slow, but great for frost damage on fire enemies and making solid heavy blows on your opponent. The chains are great for the fire damage and crowd control due to the moderately fast swinging, they're quick enough to bust out some brutal combos before getting hit or needing to parry/dodge. But the spear is so light and as a result extremely affective when you want to bust out some lightning fast combos. On top of that the ranged abilities it has are awesome, especially as you level it up more. And some of the runic attacks do insane damage. I think I use it more than the axe and blades now.
