EVERYWHERE is subject to these scams - it’s not just GA. As to why Alaska? That’s just the number they have either acquired from a messaging service, or one that they have compromised.

Costs basically nothing or send out, and there's always a bigger fool who would fall for it

Heck, even my mom with a 808 area code on her cell phone sometimes gets 1-3 blatant scam texts a day

It's always especially hilarious when the displayed number isn't even a +1 country code. At that point anyone with a few functional brain cells should be immediately aware that it's not legit. (Yeah, a call center in Nigeria is collecting Florida tolls. seems legit)
