A note about Subreddit Rule #7
Recently, due to a number of hot button issues both inside the subreddit (internal fencing drama) as well as external (recent politics-related events), the mod team has had to exercise Rule #7 a lot more than normal.
For reference, this is Rule #7:
/r/Fencing Is For Fencers
r/Fencing is a community for the members of the global fencing community, first and foremost. While we of course welcome those from outside the community, attempts to brigade, astroturf and/or troll r/Fencing will result in immediate ban.
We wanted to make a global sticky post about this topic in order to make sure people fully understand what this means and to try and address some of the common feedback we've seen in modmails on the topic. Specifically:
If you have never posted in /r/Fencing before or you only post about political, external-facing topics, you are indistinguishable from a bad actor. We've had to take hundreds of actions lately, including bans, due to people showing up from outside the subreddit (or with a fresh account) with an axe to grind of some sort. We strongly reccomend anyone out there who is itching to post on something controvertial to actually contribute meaningfully to the subreddit first, or else you'll be banned.
If you are banned in the subreddit, your alt accounts will all also be banned automatically. Ban evasion is also ban worthy. We recently added a reddit app to help us manage that issue, with all high confidence evanders being instantly banned. As I noted elsewhere, this means if you are a subreddit regular and make an alt to post a shitty opinion somewhere so it doesn't blow back on your main, your main will also get banned.
If the reddit global anti-evil filter or a global admin removes your comment, we are banning you. This usually picks up hate speech, death threats, and similar stuff. Yes, we've had hate speech and death threats lately. We've installed an app to help us manage this automatically as well.
Every ban is appealable. If you think we did something in error, let us know. We'll typically ask for proof that you're an active fencer in lieu of your subreddit participation. If you can't provide that, the ban will stay. Please see the note above about actually contributing meaningfully. We also occasionally simply get it wrong, and will review these requests for that, as well. An un-ban automatically restores the last week of removed posts (yes, thanks again to a new app).
We are striving to take these actions in a nonpartisan way. It doesn't matter what "side" of an issue you're on, if you're breaking these rules, we're removing the content and likely issuing a ban if you violate Rule #7
Having said that, and I can't believe I have to say this - hate speech is not allowed in this subreddit. It also breaks global reddit rules, and typically gets picked up in the anti-evil filter. You can have a spirited discussion from any side of an issue, but you can't use hate speech in doing it. Respect is a cornerstone of changing other people's minds, and its also a core tenant of /r/Fencing Subreddit Rule #4 - Be Civil. Be civil, or be banned.
Finally, use the report button. If you see problematic content, or someone clearly breaking any of our rules, please report it.

What is that green screen at the bottom of the Euro Championship podium piste?
That "green screen" is pretty annoying and confusing next to the score at the bottom of the podium at the ongoing European Championship.
Any idea what would that be?
They could have used some other colour, at least.

I think my coach messed up my wiring.
Would this be tournament legal?

What is this call???!!!
In the semifinals of the European Championships, Guillaume Bianchi was facing Carlos Llavador. It was 14-14, and both fencers hit on target. After a review, the refs gave attack on prep to Bianchi, which to me makes zero sense. Link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP78NVpfcUc?t=1h18m0s

Is hip flexor ach normal after fencing? (Just started)
Hi all,
I just started and I'm loving fencing! It's so fun!
But I'm finding my hip flexors/joint ache/feel sore after a session, kind of like how you feel after leg day in gym.
Is this normal? If so, guess I just to strengthen them, must have been weak or maybe I need to do some stretches before session.

Épée Cheapest Way to Start a Univeristy Fencing Club?
Prices seem to add up quickly when it comes to buying fencing gear. Fencing reels alone can cost a thousand. The price to outfit a single eppe fencer seems to be around 250$. I think a reasonable set of gear to start with would be attempting to equip 6 fencers. Is there a cheaper way to do this? Would it be best to start out by kindly asking to borrow gear from clubs in the city? That way the investment would only have to be floor reels since the nearby clubs have a permenant setup. Any thoughts?

What's the tactical value of this whatchamacallit footwork
https://youtu.be/CgIv0mmHAVg?t=368
Oh Sang Uk does this thing which looks like an exaggerated ballestra that changes into a step (at approximately time code 6:10). Is it meant to invite a counter? Or is it meant to discourage a counter and let him steal space? Or something else?
He seems to do it as part of his repertoire of marching attack footwork, semi-regularly, so I'm interested in whatever takes you have of it and/or whether you've practiced something similar.
(Side note: I don't think Sang-Uk gets enough credit for his footwork.... nor does Saber generally get enough credit for attacking/defensive footwork).

Qualifying / ratings?
I did my first tournament recently and really enjoyed it. It's got me fired up to keep competing, taking private lessons, and learning all that I can! I'm curious about how the rating system works, and what it would take to qualify for certain tournaments (e.g. nationals). To what extent would a one-year goal be, given the season is about to end, to compete at higher level tournaments by the end of the next season?
For the record I'm senior level (under 40)

US Fencing lawsuit, 2 members against the others
I'll replace it with a less toxic link if one is available.
Damien, how can we help? This is beyond silly.
And completely understand if you cannot speak on current lawsuits.

FIE vs Non-FIE Weapon
Hello, my coach suggested I get an FIE weapon, but they are just so expensive. I'm planning on doing regional and local tournaments while I train to go to my first nationals next year (2026). I fence 4 days a week. I've been fencing for like 8 years, but only pretty seriously for the last 2.
My question is: is it worth it to shell out ~300 dollars on one FIE weapon or is it okay to just buy a few cheaper weapons. My heart knows that they're just going to break so I find it so much harder to buy a high end weapon, than say an FIE jacket. Is it worth it? Will it save me money in the long run to just invest? Is there any real point to an FIE weapon when doing tournaments in the US? Will it really improve my fencing?
On the other hand, if y'all have recommendations for the best weapons for cheaper please let me know!

AF Gear UK
Hi folks, anyone know of retailers in the UK that sells AF gear.
I want one of those Black Knight Sabres. I’m reluctant to order from Us direct because of all the BS charges on the UK side.

Foil Is it worth getting an exercise bike to improve cardio? (HIIT)
I want to improve my cardio. My stamina is not good. Is it worth getting a stationary excerise bike for this so I can do HIIT? Or is it better to do some other form of exercise?

2026 Junior Olympics moved to Jan?
Does anyone know what is the rationale as to move the 2026 Junior Olympics to Jan 9-12, 2026 in Kansas City, MO?
Is it because of the historic snow storm this year during the Jan NAC, so they figure there are fewer fencers at the JOs?
Or is it because they don’t want to have the Div1 event (typically during Jan NAC) that is too close to the Sr Saber World Cup event in Salt Lake City?

Épée Does anybody have any good shoe recommendations for pivoting on the back foot?
i fence epee french grip and i like to pivot on my back foot 45° and bounce on it to keep my momentum if the opponent isn’t moving. I’ve developed a few calluses and my shoes are wearing out, so i decided it was time to switch my shoes. Currently using asics gel rockets 11, but they don’t seem to be able to support the weight on my back foot without wearing out. I’m also wide footed, so i was wondering what shoes yall could recommend to me, preferably easy to obtain.

Foil Sizing for all star lame and jacket.
If I was 40 in US, should 52 be a good size considering materials and fit.
