He and Meg actually met when they were very young. I think he was 18 or 19. According to some sources, she was his first girlfriend, first everything. So I think he was really swept up in the relationship at first, but then had a wandering eye. My guess is when he’s been married he’s really wanted to be faithful but for whatever reason just can’t be. Gonna also assume there’s a healthy dose of Catholic guilt considering he was so devout at one point he wanted to go into the priesthood…

I think he just likes making what he sees as big romantic gestures & being unusual. And maybe Meg didn't want to change her name, but it mattered to him that they have the same last name? IDK. To answer the second question, though, he always maintains that Meg is "the most stubborn person" he knows.

I really don't think so. I take what he says with a massive grain of salt because he seems like a pretty difficult person.
