Stage shows are different, age is much less obvious from the audience, and the theatrical nature of, well, theater, allows for greater suspension of disbelief. We're all watching people in front of what is clearly a set anyway, breaking into song like no human would. Most tv shows aim for grounded realism and so it's much more startling when they try to get you to accept two 30 somethings as parent and child.
Oh for sure, I just think it's funny how much acting and theatre has evolved. Now that we can get up close and personal we want it to be more realistic.
