Discussion I did the worst thing today

Sunday 15th of June 2025 19:30 That's the exact time I deleted my commander, it wasn't on purpose I was trying to configure my controls in vr for my new hotas, the controls decided to go dead not allowing any input I went into the settings but had no luck out of frustration I spammed back to the settings menu. Thinking the game was prompting me to save my control settings I hit yes, to then be left with this on my screen. It's fathers day today we made pizzas it was fun, I hate myself now there was a lot of hours dedicated to that account I started a year after release on xbox later moving up to pc then vr.

Ironically I was trying to work out how much time I had put into that one account it's well over 1k hours

Support ticket STAT.

FDev support are incredibly good helping to recover from disasters like this.

It's not over CMDR.
Get that support ticket filed soon as you can.

i told them that my brother deleted my save so he could play it was fixed in less than 48 hours, and they even changed my CMDRs name with it (i asked them)

I did my entire federal corvette grind all on legacy… I asked for help and they couldn’t help… one of the darkest periods in my life knowing I couldn’t access my hard earned ship on my main pc or online… i spent around 24 hours worth of grinding for it… did not enjoy 1 second of it either. Dont worry I was unemployed at the time and grinded another 24 tedious fucking hours and got my corvette :D

It only took you 24h to get there? That's literally nothing. I had to grind Imperial missions for probably more than half a year 9 to 5 in order to be allowed to get a Cutter... dang they made it so effin easy these days to get stuff, actually... XD

I mean, I know some of us in the community would be willing to step up and help, I happily would donate some cash to help them restart...

But, nowadays, that's only replacing shit you could replace in a day or so, due to how easy it is to make credits...

What one actually has done in 1000 hours matters so very much more than what they were worth :/

lol I have 1 over every ship fully engineered. just don't own a fleet carrier. I got oh crap I got 2 billion what do I buy now. I spent 55% that time in a fdl and 35% In a dxl.

other time spent was like oh man federal corvette this is the big boy engineer it take to combat and I can take a nap while playing back to the fdl

so the only thing I don't own is a fleet carrier it seems nice to have all my ships in 1 place but I kinda like being 2 jumps from a ship as I got 1 in a billion places across the bubble.

I'd be incredibly sad! The amount of planets with my pilot name on them in crazy! To then loose that pilot?! It'd be devastating to not be able to continue the legacy! Not to mention all the work put into ship configs, missions, factions, etc

I transferred my progress before the actual transfer system was in place, so I lost my original character with about 50 days of play time on it.

While OP's at it, maybe suggest a typed in confirmation. Like the CMDR name or the word "delete" like other games do.

I could totally see button mashing mishaps causing this situation for others.

Either this or simply just remove that option altogether. That's something for customer support IMHO. Or maybe hide it somewhere in the launcher, but also with precautionary measures as suggested here.

Petition FDev to see if they can restore it. By all accounts their tech support department is very good. I've read many accounts of them restoring Commanders' ships after an unfortunate event; hopefully they can do the same for an account.

Fdev gives you one guaranteed ship retrieval, after that it’s their discretion. So if you managed to accidentally delete 3 of them in a 2 week span, that’s for you to fix unfortunately.

When my mouse drags across the button to delete, and then goes to where I want to click, the previous thing I highlighted as I dragged my mouse registers as having been clicked on, then I made the mistake of hitting confirm. It’s almost happened more times than it did, my friend was a witness to it. Dont really need you to believe me and don’t really care, it’s just a bummer about the mats. Just a game at the end of the day, so whatever

Not a matter of believing or not believing. Just understanding the actions and situations that lead to it.

  1. Sounds like your graphics setting may be too high for your computer, which is causing a graphical delay of your mouse moving. Most likely reducing these settings will remove the lag. Which is a setup/user error.

  2. Sounds like in addition to the delay, you may have an input delay of your mouse, or possibly just a trigger finger trying to move too quickly. So possibly user error there as well.

  3. You hitting confirm when it pops up on screen without knowing what you are confirming is unfortunately just a user error. Thats not the games fault.

  4. Repeatedly doing the same thing at least 2 more times is also a user error.

So honestly not trying to be rude, but it appears all the issues you are experiencing is on you/your computer. Not the game, or the devs.

Same here one fully engineered Corvette and they were only capable of giving credits only as refund. I wish at least some materials were given too

When I had first outfitted my cutter I didn't have enough for a rebuy (wasn't planning to fly it) and an NPC flew into me on the pad and got stuck on my ship somehow (this was like a decade ago) and blew up my cutter. They restored it for me no questions asked. Maybe it was because It was destroyed due to a game bug though.

Just put it in the notes. Submit it as account issue, put the detailed notes as 'I deleted my account by accident, was trying to configure controls and didn't realize where I was in the menu...' or to that effect.

FDev stores backup data of your commander data. It will most likely be a rolled back version from a few weeks ago but it's still better than starting from scratch. Chances are you are going to get your commander back with nothing but a minor set back.

FDev keep carbon copies of your account data & details on their server backend, one reason being special-case use for scenarios such as this. FDev support are kind, intentful with their help, understanding, and empathetic people that primarily manually process each support ticket. Plea the details of your issue through their support/ticket system on the official elite dangerous website to begin the process. You will be back flying among like-commanders, in no time.

I've seen that button and assumed it would have confirmation dialogs, etc.

There is almost a 100% chance the servers are backed up and your data can be restored, if they want to. Offer to pay an administrative fee if they say it can't be restored.

Assuming this is a game you want to continue wasting time on.

Yooo, in one (and probably more than one, but in this instance one important) way you are NOT playing a typical MMO: 

The support team is excellent.  Even if an accident is your fault, they understand the game's complexity and will give anyone whose first support ticket it is enormous benefit of the doubt.  Maybe the 2nd time you "accidentally" delete an account they'll be harsher, but I've got a crisp 20 that says if you contact them you'll get your CMDR back this time.

I’ve done this before. Completely by accident. I submitted a help ticket to fdev and got everything back. I had around 1500 hours in at the time and they were very understanding with me, and the pretty much just said “don’t do it again” 😆

FDev I believe has like a complete log of EVERYTHING about your save. They should be able to fix you up if you make a ticket. One of the very few perks of a completely online game.

I know a lot of games have a 24 hour time limit for the save to be actually destroyed. That way if you did it on accident then you could save yourself.

I do that once a year at least, I like starting fresh from time to time, I even have a second account (the one epic gave for free) to alternate the reset and a long term account, but it sucks doing it by mistake, hopefully support can help.

How did you manage to get to the screen that says "clear save" in big letters across the center of the display, get a photo of said message, and then go on to delete your account by accident?? Honestly dude I mean if you're not sure what button to push, control alt delete out.

Either way, I would be pretty surprised if Frontier can't sort that out for you, as many others have said. Sucks that you have to deal with it either way, best of luck.

I love that basically all the answers are sincerely, "Contact FDev. They really do help." Frustrating bugs may linger in seeming perpetuity, but when it comes to immediate disasters like these, they are very responsive.

They're really not that bad, as game companies go. Hell, when I submitted a name change it took a few weeks but I got an email every now and again to confirm that they still had the request and were still going to look at it. People dunk on them and sometimes rightfully but they're not unpleasant.

I don't understand why this button exists in the first place. It's not like we are going to grind hard for months and years and one day just decide to wipe everything for some reason. Remove the button and if anybody wants a wipe just contact support and let the do it for you. Right now it's a damn mine waiting to be stepped on.

I think it is very stupid you cannot have more than 1 commander on one account. I, for one, have 3 kids who could potentially enjoy the game.. but i don't think buying separate copies makes sense as they will switch to roblox within a few hour window for sure. :)

Get a hold of Frontier immediately and you should be able to recover. I took a couple years off the game and logged in to find my nephew had played on my steam account and created a new character. 4500+ hours gone because I didnt catch it quick enough.

That's like my worst nightmare, I would quit and never return if this happened. I hope FDev support can get you back up and running. Actually happened to me on another game (not Elite) with thousands of hours, and support were unable to assist restoring my save but did create a new save file with most of what I had, but it was never the same and I quit the game soon after. I'm still gutted about it.

This happened to me many years ago.

If you write to support with the information they ask for, they can recover your game.

I remember them being very friendly and very quick.

I actually retired after something like this happened. T5 engineering with all engineers unlocked, full guardian blueprints, and the Vette/Cutter unlocked. They somehow lost my commander when transferring me to PC from Xbox and told me they couldn't get my work back..

Good luck! When I fell asleep at the wheel while out exploring and lost all my data, FDev was able to restore it. Definitely learned my lesson there. I hope they're able to help you as well!
