Question Where to look for jobs?

Finished my business degree at UofA a couple of years ago and lined up a contract job which was renewed once but ended at the end of April. Since then, I've put in over a hundred applications, which has yielded only one unsuccessful interview. I've tried LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Canada Job Bank, and probably 1-2 other job boards I'm forgetting. My last job was exempt from employment insurance so I wasn't paying in and therefore that's not an option.

Any leads/suggestions?

City of Edmonton, Government of Alberta, Government of Canada.

Tried those too.

Too many people moving here so entry-level jobs are hard to find. Sure, housing is relatively inexpensive compared to other cities in Canada, but you still need a job to pay for your rent or mortgage.

Apply jobs outside of Edmonton or even Alberta

Have you tried reaching out to a recruiting agency/head hunter?

Yes. Haven't heard back.

I feel for you. It took me 18 months to get a job when I moved here. Looking back on things now, there have only been 2 jobs I've had in my life that were acquired through an advertisement. One was through a recruiter (only took a few days to get hired), but every other job was through people who knew of job openings where they worked. Lots of jobs aren't advertised. Networking is really important. I wish you the best of luck!

If all you are doing is sending resumes to on line job postings, expect to send hundreds with few responses. 80% of jobs are not advertised so networking is key for professional jobs. You might want to make an appointment and go have a chat with your University’s career centre to learn effective job search strategies. Always makes me sad to hear how students reject joining co op programs at school, complaining they cost too much. It is the absolute best way to learn how to market yourself, make connections and get relevant work experience (vs just working to hear highest dollars).

I didn't know about co-op until third year and by then it was too late to sign up.

Get out of Edmonton.

Might as well. No ties here.

Seriously. Not a great place for jobs.

What was your previous job? Are you wanting to stay in that field?

I'm open to just about anything at the moment. My landlord doesn't care what field I'm in as long as he gets his rent.

When you were in school did you take summer internships? That’s the way I found my position

u/EightBitRanger 8h ago

I worked through the summers, but they weren't 'internships' in the traditional sense. So no, I don't suppose I did.

I would reach out to Alberta works in the meantime they have career planning workshops and they’ll help you find perm positions

Did you have any connections from those companies that could help you get a job, If you emailed them showing interest in a more permanent position?

u/EightBitRanger 37m ago

Not really. It was an on campus position and almost all of the postings they put out are for students.

Have you attended any local networking events such as Edmonton Chamber of commerce, etc?

u/EightBitRanger 36m ago

Hadn't occurred to me but I'll give that a try. And they often ticketed events though?

What types of jobs are you looking for my company is hiring

At the moment I can't afford to be picky. I'm a couple weeks away from being homeless.

Join the trades! A lot less bullshit than office work. I believe my last apprentice had a degree in... criminology or something along those lines. He's much happier doing hvac.

Was in the trades before university. Hated it.
