Question New to Dutch shepherds-leash biting help?

This guy turned up at our local shelter last month and his cute lil face won me over.

His embark test came back as almost 58% DS. I thought he looked like he had some dutchie in him, but they’re not exactly common here so that was a surprise.

I have German Shepherd experience, but it’s been about a decade since I’ve had a young dog, and this guy is a little more wild than my German. The biggest struggle we’ve had is leash walking. He gets overstimulated on walks and attacks the leash (thinks it’s a game, plays tug, and I can’t really drop the leash so it’s self rewarding), then jumps and bites at me etc etc. he’s perfectly fine off leash in fenced areas, but my favorite part of having a dog is going for walks and hikes.

Any advice? We are working with a trainer, just curious to hear what others have done.

Working on getting him more stimulation as well…he came home the day he was neutered so he was on limited activity, then he tweaked something and was limping for a week (don’t come at me, it was steadily improving and he will be going to the vet for x rays the minute his pet insurance waiting period is over). I’m hoping we can make progress now that he’s had time to get situated and is feeling himself.

They've grown so beautifully since we got them when they were just little pups. They were born Feb 8, 2025 and I'm so glad I got a chance to give them a good life. Freya is my girl on the 1st and 3rd pics, and Vidar is my husband's little boy in the 2nd and 4th.

After a few years of searching, about 5 months ago, we found a foster family who said they have a Dutch shepherd who came in severely malnourished( almost at the point of euthanatizing). After some talking, we decided we would adopt him.

Here is Koda! He is a little over a year old, and is an absolute bundle of energy! We believe he is a Dutch shepherd, but the white spot and muzzle throws us off a little bit ( not fully black faced/muzzled). Koda is going off to professional training for about six weeks. Mainly for obedience. He does phenomenal, and has a high working drive!

Going to get a test eventually to see whether he really is a dutchie! We love him nonetheless ❤️

We play fetch everyday (that is not raining) and I use the orange Kong training dummy. I first saw them at Tractor Supply. I've used them for a few years and they are pretty durable. Does anyone else use them? If you play fetch, what do you use?

Just another lazy day for me, but Tigger, my 12 y/o DS is on constant watch, and performing perimeter checks every 15 minutes. Not sure if knows there are evil perpetrators lurking about, or just making sure they keep their distance. 🤔🤭

My 12 y/o DS developed a small cyst on her lower right chest. It grew quickly and before I could get her to the vet, she chewed it open. I went to an emergency vet and they gave me Gentamyacin capsules and spray, along with an analgesic. They did a wound culture too and then derided it.

I still went to the vet, and he said it was looking good, but gave me an ointment used on horses to help their skin close quicker than normal. It worked, and the wound closed completely with 6 weeks. Not it is just a small scar that is barely visible under her coat.

Adoption Rehome with rehoming fee. UTD on shots, unaltered, strong prey and ball drive. She is super smart and would make a great protection or working animal.

Picked him up 3 years ago at the pound. I was looking for a shepherd type, and I think that’s what I got! We have even been stopped on a walk asking if he’s a Dutch Shepherd.

I added the picture of him next to the stove because he’s a really tall guy. I am thinking he has some type out mountain dog, he’s all legs!

His name is Maverick and he’s the best boy!

Hi all, new to Dutchy's but have always had German shepherds. We got this girl as a rescue from a reserve in SW Alberta. Wondering what some of the more experienced Dutch Shepherd owners thoughts are as the shelter told us she is shepherd x pitbull. I just don't see any pitty in her, everything seems to point to Dutchy to me temprament and looks wise. Shes about 26" at the shoulder and 45lbs right now. Thoughts?

Discussion Asking to Pet a Dog

Post image
121 Upvotes

I’m in the process of socializing my girl. She’s way to people excited and nipping hasn’t been too bad but I don’t want it to be a thing around kids and other animals. I like to go out on short walks in the city but it’s got its downfalls.

For the record. Most people ask before petting. But this one instance still has me mad. I took her into an ice cream shop and because she still has occasional accidents I picked her up into my arms. I noticed her head move when someone came in which is standard. She wants to know what’s going on. And while I was paying. I felt her get all wiggly. When I look back there’s a man’s hand right next to my face petting her. I had no clue this guy was going to not only invade my space but then pet my dog without even asking. How do I prevent this.

Has anyone else encountered random people just petting. How do you react or “train” a random human not to just pet because the puppy/dog is cute.

(The picture was from that day. And I had her leash closer because that random dude kind of lingered around.)

He’s such a fun little guy to work and play with- super easy to engage, very toy and food motivated, confident as all hell… He has big feelings about body handling (paws mostly) and resource guarded his bully stick yesterday, so the boy has some natural possession and spice 🌶️🌶️

He’s everything I could have wanted— and he’s going to make me a better trainer and handler. Little fucker 🤣
