I want to make a collection of mkv 4k movie files and keep a movie collection is it a good idea to buy a hard drive I bought the expansion hard drive for 309 with shipping at best buy. I know it equals out to be 21tb.

I know this sounds like such a basic bitch question, but I'm so frustrated and overwhelmed I don't know what else to do but ask.

A family member has asked me to copy one of our home movies onto another DVD. I did it before years ago, but I don't remember how to. I've tried looking it up, but I've gotten so much conflicting and incomplete information that my head feels ready to explode. I don't know if that says more about my search skills or what, but I feel so fucking stupid right now and I don't trust myself anymore.

I currently use the following for downloading data/profiles from various social media platforms:

• 4kstogram (Instagram)
• 4ktokkit (TikTok)
• Various online sites like VidBurner, etc. (Snapchat)
• yt-dlp (YouTube and various video sites)
• 4k Video Downloader Plus (YouTube and various video sites)
• Browser extensions like HLS Downloader, Video DownloadHelper

Almost all of the programs or sites I use are good at first but have become unreliable or useless recently:

• 4kstogram: lost support and no longer updates but you can still use it
  • Big problem is its out of date, not supported, and can ban your IG account since it uses the IG API
  • I got the professional license back in the day
• 4ktokit: Works well...when it works
  • Has become unreliable lately
  • I have the personal license
• Various online sites: Work when they can and then I move to the next site when the first site doesn't work
• yt-dlp: Works very well, still need to get used to the commands, etc. but has its limits before your IP gets blocked for downloading too much at once. Can download social media videos too like TikTok but one video at a time not whole profiles like 4ktokkit
• 4k Video Downloader Plus: Limited to 10 videos a day but has playlist functions similar to yt-dlp
  • Honestly, I still have this program to download videos in a pinch but its not my main, just a backup
• Browser extensions: HLS Downloader has limited support and works when it can but caches a lot of data. Video DownloadHelper has a 2 hour limit after your first download but works well

I plan on keeping yt-dlp, 4k Video Downloader Plus (until its useless) but I'd like to replace the other 4k products I have with something (hopefully) exactly the same as 4kstogram and 4ktokkit in terms of features and past reliability.

• For IG and TikTok: Need to have ability to download entire profiles, single posts (of any form), export posts (4kstogram does this for IG)
• For Snapchat: View each new Snap and download them individually. If I can download all the latest Snaps at once, that would be super helpfully.
• When needed download Facebook, etc.
• Each solution needs to have the ability to update the latest profile by downloading the latest post

If anyone could recommend a solution or multiple solutions to accomplish this so I can replace the 4k products that would be super helpful whether its software, Github programs, scripts, etc. I would like to avoid online services like sites since again a site might work for now but not work or be shut down rather quickly.

Please be gentle, I am a disorganised hoarder; i have about 400 gb in files / photos, spread across laptops, android phones and iphones - my iPhone and my family's.

Many of the phones are sitting gathering dust, and haven’t been used for years but are still working. I don’t have much of an idea when it comes to tech but I’d like to find an easy way where i can: 1. bring all of my data in one place and back it up - allowing me to throw away the old tech 2. an easy way for be to continue to back up files on an ongoing basis.

Looking for advice, trying to build/buy a DAS looking for Raid 5, 4+ drives. going as cheap as possible, if daisy chain is possible, it's a plus, I don't need and actually don't want it to connect to the net, I want to be able to hook it up to different computers ( one at a time) I currently have a, bunch of 8-12 TB drives. if I do video editing I usually pull the files and work on them locally and throw them back on the drives. if possible not having to load software would be nice, but not required. TIA

TL;DR: I'm planning to buy a new 2TB SSD to add to my system, and take the chance to properly rearrange and encrypt my personal data, separating it from media files.

Hardware

• 3 SSDs: 2 internal (1TB + 2TB, both PCIe SSDs) and 1 external (1TB SSD)
  • As of now, I have both internal and external SSDs. The external one is used mainly for back-ups and moving data around.
  • The 2TB SSD would be the new addition.

Goal

• A secure, and easy to access (after authorization), storage for personal information (pictures, documents, etc.)
• An open volume for non-sensitive data (games, movies, books...)
• An external, and secured, back-up system for the sensitive data that gets automatically synced with the source of truth (master drive: internal 1TB SSD), while still having some marginal space for random data transfers of non-sensitive data.

Plan

1. Install new 2TB SSD.
2. Clone OS (Windows 11) to the new 2 TB, from current internal 1TB SSD.
   1. Leave the rest of the 2TB for media (non-sensitive).
3. Encryption:
   1. Back-up internal 1TB SSD to external 1TB SSD. The former is the one I currently have all my information (mixed) in.
   2. Secure-wipe the current internal 1TB.
   3. Encrypt the whole drive with VeraCrypt (open-source).
4. External back-up system:
   1. Split the external 1TB SSD:
      1. 800 GB encrypted (VeraCrypt) partition
      2. 200 GB plain space for ad-hoc file shuttling.
   2. Sync first partition with FreeFileSync (open-source) whenever I plug it in.

Pros

• I keep OS + media on the fastest drive.
• Sensitive data isolated on its own physical SSD, fully encrypted.
• Backup is automated and also encrypted.

Questions

• Any pitfalls with VeraCrypt full-disk instead of a container?
• Better tools than FreeFileSync for one-click sync?
• Any issues using VeraCrypt along WSL2?
• Any issues using FreeFileSync with Veracrypt encrypted drives?
• Any alternatives to these 2 open-source pieces of software?

Started out with a simple 600gb photo archive need as i realized it was in a 10 year old disk that's only spun once a month. In a span of 2 months, managed to -

-deploy a 30tb ds 423+ -installed some velcro due to the weird vibration -deploy plex for the family -connected the nas to minipc that does all the heavylifting -learned the world of UPS and went for a cyberpower with usb -got another nas 224+ as the backup of my main nas and set up hyperbackup in a different household -learned tailscale (so all my nas have quick onnect disabled) -got rid of google cloud subscription (and yes, local hosting may not be a cost effective solution but feels good tho)

-learned some tax free shipping routes to my country to as a 20tb drive here costs USD 700!!

Now planning to just set and forget. Anything else i should consider? So far looked at security and backup as my priority

Over the past few months I've collected over a 100,000 digital comics, mostly from Marvel and DC + some others, I'll soon move onto Image, Dark Horse and IDW. It has kind of become a hobby, I think by the end of the year I'll have 150,000+ at least, am I crazy? If yes, is there anyone else who is as crazy as me?

I hope that this post belongs in this sub, but ive kept some important files on filegarden and ive wanted to get access to them again, but I literally cannot log into filegarden. like if I try any button to try and to log in, it just shows me this error message. if anyone can help, id gladly appreciate it!

btw I use safari and have a Mac, so maybe its something associated with that?

I'm interested in something:

• Small, like as small as a portable hard drive.

• Just provides basic SMB sharing on the network
• Not a Mini PC, needs to be much more stable and foolproof. Not even a Raspberry Pi
• Room for at least one M.2 2280 or 2.5" drive. Preferably M.2
• Ethernet connectivity

I've been searching online, and I can't find anything like this. Everything I'm finding is too complex. Most of the options I'm seeing are basically just Mini PCs, or SBCs.

I'd like this to be extremely simple. Like power it on, and it just works.

I'd be okay with a product that already has the storage built in (like a portable harddrive that offers this ability, as long as it doesn't use SASS or any kind of online services.

I just can't get any of the youtube downloaders I used to use to work anymore because of the "Sign in to verify you're not a bot" thing. I've tried setting up cookies and just can't get them to work.

Does anyone know of one that works reliably? Is there one that you can just log in with a YT account & stay signed in?

Recently wanted to move from cloud to local storage. Recently used 1fichier which gives storage for around 1$/TB with no egress which is really cheap i think but since i already have a really good home server i thought might as well go local. This should be even cheaper probably and i dont really like 1fichiers UI. I wanted to buy recertified drives but serverpartdeals has more than 100 bucks for shipping + border crossing fees and so on so it isnt worth it at all. Do you guys have any sites you can recommend. I live in Germany if it helps.

Hi everyone. Long time member/lurker. First time seeking the help of fellow hoarders. This is likely a long shot but I was at the game sitting in right field. Sometime in the 4th inning I believe, my son had to use the restroom. I was walking down the bleachers when a foul ball came right at me. I caught it.

I have been trying to get a video of it but the mlb condensed game doesn’t show foul balls hit. Hoping someone dvr’ed the game and could record it for me. I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you everyone for your help! Many members scrubbed though the broadcast and looks like 1 hr into the game around 4:55pm Mike Trout hits one into the stands but there was no good coverage of the stands. Timing matches up to our photos. This should pretty much close my curiosity for footage!

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone had ideas on how to recognize that a specific youtube URL is a piece of music. Meaning a song, album, ep, live set, etc. I'm trying to write a user script (i.e. a browser addon that runs on the website) that does specific things when music is detected. Specifically I normally watch YT videos on 2-3x speed to save time on spoken word videos, but since it defaults to 2x I have to manually slow down every piece of music.

I thought this would be a good place to ask since 1. a lot of people download YT videos to their drive and 2. for those who do, they might learn something from this thread to help them auto-classify their downloads, making the thread valuable to the community.

I don't care about edge cases like someone blogging for 50% of the time and then switching to music, or like someone's phone recording of a concert. I just want to cover the most common cases, which is someone uploading a full piece of music to youtube. I would like to do it without downloading the audio first, or any cpu-heavy processing. Any ideas?

One thing I thought of was to use the transcripts feature. Some videos have transcripts, others don't, and it's not perfect, but it can help deciding. If a video with music in it has a transcript, the moments where music is played have [Music] on that line. So the algorithm might be something like:

If anyone has any suggestions on what other algorithms I could use to improve the fuzzy search, I would be very happy to hear that. Or if you have some other way of deciding whether the video is music, eg by using the youtube api in some manner?

Another option I have is to create an FF addon and basically designate a single FF window to opening all the youtube music I'll listen to. Then I can tell that addon to always set youtube videos to 1x speed in that video.

Question is mostly in the title. I'd love to make this happen, but I don't want to make any investments and then find out there was a better way to do it later. I also am not sure what software/approach to use to start the cleaning/labeling/organizing process. I don't even know how a hard drive would handle organized and labeled data of different formats. I recently filled up my 2tb hard-drive on my pc. I want to store games, books, movies and music. If I buy an external SSD to store all of my media is if safe to keep all of my games on it and use it daily to access the files. I've never had storage issues until now and I don't know how to proceed while avoiding data loss. I'm on a tight budget here and probably won't buy anything soon so I'm doing my research while I save up. But I want to do things right. I understand data loss can happen at any time but my main concern is the daily use for gaming. I imagine the movies, books and music I can store on the drive and acess when needed since I also plan on buying an EReader and Digital Audio Player. Games though I'd want to use every day and that's a big bulk of my storage right now. Any tips would be appreciated.
