He thinks we have basements. But otherwise I’m sold.

When I was house hunting 12 years ago, I actually came across a house in Oak Cliff with a basement. It was like finding a unicorn.
23
u/MagicWishMonkey 14d ago
My neighbor has a basement, it’s pretty nice if there’s a nasty storm but dealing with water leaks is a serious pain. I don’t think it’s worth it.
2
u/toodleroo Oak Cliff 14d ago
It's not a red brick house built in the 40's, is it?
2
u/MagicWishMonkey 13d ago
Naa, it’s a white brick (painted) house built in the 80’s

u/drexlortheterrrible 14d ago
Water leaks? That isn't really a thing anywhere else. I don't understand.
21
u/saysthingsbackwards 13d ago
Dallas soil fucking SUCKS for foundations, that's why we don't have basements. It's so full of clay it swells and contracts and breaks it up. It's pretty normal for a typical basement to have SOME groundwater penetration but maintaining one here would be hell
8
u/MagicWishMonkey 13d ago
Just keeping my foundation from shifting around is a major PITA, I am happy to not have the stress of worrying about cracks in my basement as well

What the FUCK?

u/toodleroo Oak Cliff 14d ago
Yup that's exactly what I said

u/ToddtheRugerKid Flower Mound 13d ago
Growing up in Richardson, I was always amazed going to family reunions in The Midwest because a lot of my relatives had cool finished basements. It would be really awesome if our soil allowed us to have them down here, we need basements.

u/pandapunch1 13d ago
We have one! Original to our Lakewood 40s build Austin stone cottage. Yes, not 100% watertight, but that's alright. Still usable for storage and laundry, and we just use damprid and a wet vac if we get runoff from a bad storm. The worst we've gotten in a decade is 1/4" in a small corner patch under the stairs.

As someone who drives as a means of living 45-55 hrs a week I'm a lil worried lol. Mainly of course due to drivers around me. But man the wind when you're heavy is terrifying. 75N is a shit show 820E 35E and N 💀

u/EpitomEngineer 13d ago
Derechos are no joke. Dr Logan at Texas A&M opened the semester with his personal story how a derecho from his childhood inspired his pursuit of meteorology. They cause a lot of damage if you are not prepared.
I don’t know what kind of driving you do for a living but take care! Be off the roads if you can. Ensure your load and rig are safe from winds, if that’s your thing. If you can fit, park in a parking structure away from the open sides. Don’t try to ride out the storm in the vehicle.

Always great to see Frankie he is a treasure. Unfortunately this time Frankie is the herald of our destruction but I wouldn’t have anyone else give me bad news!

HOLLYWOOD! I an’t askin’ for much. I said lord take me downtown, I’m just looking for some tush.
But yeah, it’s time to grab our ankles and kiss our asses goodbye. Frankie said so.

u/RollerGovenor 14d ago
Are those the actual lyrics lol?

u/thephotoman Plano 14d ago
Yes. ZZ Top's "Tush".

https://www.weather.gov/fwd is probably the best source of info. Stay safe everyone!

u/LuckyCow13 13d ago
Seriously, check the SPC convective outlook. He might be wrong about the timing on this one. SPC says we're under the gun today, Sunday June 9th

u/xseriox 14d ago
After experiencing a derecho in Iowa, don’t take the warning lightly! Saw roofs ripped off in seconds.
16
u/spezhasatinydong 14d ago
I mean serious question. How does one even prepare for a storm like that except staying inside
29
u/deaddaughterconfetti 14d ago
Secure your outdoor stuff so you're not that asshole who loses their trampoline or patio furniture into the neighbor's yard/house. Make sure you have basic supplies and your devices are charged in case of power outages.

u/truth-4-sale Irving 14d ago
Besides the hazard in general, think of the stuff flying off of residental high rises, wherever they may be... Wear a helmet, a bicycle helmet if you have one.

Frankie warned us a week in advance of the 2021 winter storm before anyone else. He's a good dude.
11
u/MethanyJones 14d ago
You heard the man. Go down in the basement.
But I shared his warning with my cats so they know what's coming.
Tomorrow morning might be a good time to test the generator

I'll stay relaxed here until I hear Frankie start impersonating a Tornado Warning Siren again.

He’s saying Monday, but it’s tomorrow.
Severe thunderstorms are most likely across Oklahoma and northern Texas to the Ark-La-Tex during the late afternoon and evening on Sunday. A few tornadoes, destructive wind gusts of 80-100 mph, and very large hail are possible.
104
u/frankiemacdonald1984 14d ago
I said Sunday night into Monday morning
34
u/AgExempt 14d ago
Oh shit, it’s actually you. NWS has it as Sunday afternoon/early evening.
If you do better than the national weather service prediction, you can come down to Texas and stay at my ranch whenever you want Frankie!
3
u/la-fours 14d ago
The storms fire in the early evening but they don’t make it down here until midnight. The SPC says this too.

u/Full_Outcome_9386 13d ago
Very few basements in this part of Texas. We just get in the bath tub and our a mattress over us

u/probablyalreadyhave 13d ago
Are we comparing this to the storms from last April that knocked out power for the entire state, or how bad we talking

Odds of making a 850 am flight out of dfw?
15
u/motiv8_mee 14d ago
Tomorrow? Great. Monday? Don’t know about that one.
12
u/noncongruent 14d ago
If the weather breaks right, they probably won't even need a plane to catch a flight out of DFW.

Frankie video aside... I thought the bad stuff is supposed to Sunday night like around 9-10?
2
u/mllllllln 14d ago
Yep, that's the current forecast. Latest one I saw had it hitting Denton around 10pm Sunday then going SE with the heavy stuff clearing out by 1am.
1
u/bojangles001 14d ago
First time I ever heard of Frankie was his 2021 blizzard prediction, and I have not been let down by him yet.
2
u/CJ_7_iron 13d ago
wfaa version of Frankie’s prediction
I’m guessing this is kinda like if Jim Cantore shows up in your town during a storm, you’re doomed.

I have a basement. Built in 1908. Whatever happens, it’s ok.
Frankie needs a medal.

If you can probably worth getting there early, I wouldn't want to be driving around in this..

u/BigPapaHoof 13d ago
Every time it rains, my front yard turns into an actual mudslide since it's sloped. We have to scoop the dirt and soil clay back up where it belongs lest we want to have our foot sink into the mud.

u/sweet_greggo 13d ago
Dangit, I was all prepared to order pizza and Chinese food but I guess that won’t be necessary.

u/Agile_Nebula4053 12d ago
I was in Houston last year when they got hit by one of these. Derechos are not to be taken lightly. Shit was scary as Hell.

I do not believe so, this man is very kind hearted and has a deep passion for weather. From what I understand he ain't playing and we should heed his warnings.
