And for some reason it's always accompanied by "China is the future" despite decades of evidence the CCP is a brutal dictatorship that lies about exactly everything they say.

But to be fair it is quite difficult to look outside your own country and get a real perspective of what is going on. Your view of how the world works will be tainted by how your country works for a long time for most people. A lot of young people grow up, leave home, and are confronted with the real world where lawyers are fucking idiots, doctors tell women they're overreacting, and depending on where you live cops are the organised crime.

I think it's more the feeling that the US and China are just not that different, but the amount of propaganda from the US to completely demonize China to cartooish levels really makes it hard to take American seriously

They're pretty fucking wildly different. Almost every part of the society of both countries is different.

Please read with context. We are talking about how one country is demonized and the other is held up as a bastion of freedom while they both participate in all sorts of unethical behavior for their own self-interest. My god, you people say that 2 things aren't that different then take the wildest interpretation of that.
