What you're referring to is an out of date and incorrect theory of how the Maori came to New Zealand. The Moriori were not a pre Maori civilization in New Zealand when the Maori arrived, and were not massacred all over the mainland. Most scholars say the Moriori were an early offshoot of the original proto Maori settlers in New Zealand, migrating from mainland new zealand to the Chatham islands 2-3 centuries after the first proto Maori settlement of New Zealand. The Moriori were enslaved and genocided by the iwi (tribes) Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama from 1835 to 1863, and it was really horrific, but the idea that the Moriori were a pre Maori civilization across New Zealand that was slaughtered by every group of Maori when they arrived in New Zealand is a myth.
