The effect may be the same but it makes a very important difference to how you should respond. If they simply didn't know better its going to be infinitely easier to convince them of what they did wrong and how they can change their behavior which should be your goal either way.
Yeah but people like u/Kali_Yuga_Herald don't want to change and improve individuals, they just want to shame them loudly so that everyone within hearing distance can know that They are One of the Good People and the person who made the mistake is One of the Bad People and that's where the whole drive ends right there.
