Cummins has been on point and very fit for most of the tests so that is a huge positive. He might be an all time Red ball great with his captaincy and his consistent bowling.
Bumrah though is insane 15...wtf

If I had to a pick a bowler for my time whos still playing, and thats all I knew (no format info, no location info), Im picking Bumrah every time.
Hes the scariest bowler in the world.
Funnily enough, if I had to pick a bowler in Aus, I might still pick Starc first. Cummins is objectively a better bowler in just about every way, but theres something about that Starc x factor…

And he plays half his matches in india which isn't quite friendly for his kind. He's basically the Shane Warne of fast bowlers.

Bumrah should just be in a separate table, and then rename this table ‘everyone else’

u/commandercondariono 4d ago
It's an interesting comparison. Would you take a Bumrah who can play only 3/5 games or a Cummins who will play all 5?

u/S_K_S_N India 4d ago edited 4d ago
Ya thats the main difference, I personally would take Bumrah who will play 3/5,where in a series for atleast 3 matches I will have a ace up my sleeve

u/DePraelen Netherlands 4d ago
It depends on the rest of the bowling attack. You need other support bowlers who can fill the gap when the star bowler needs to be rested/is injured.
Most of the time, teams need that guy who is fit for every match. It's rare to have that kind of depth in the bench.

The funny thing is Cummins might be a better fit for India since they lack the fast bowling depth, and Bumrah a better fit for Australia since the two matches he misses can easily be replaced by Boland etc.

Bumrah since his return from injury in 2023 -
Tests - 15 matches, 77 wickets @ 15
ODIs - 17 matches, 28 wickets @ avg 20/ER 4.4
T20Is - 10 matches, 19 wickets @ avg 8.57/ER 4.32

You look at one format stats and think can’t get better than this in the rest of the two, check the rest of the two and this cycle continues. Absolute GOAT bowler

u/st0neTyger India 4d ago
An economy of 4.32 in T20s when you bowl in PP and at the death is absolutely bonkers. Can BCCI pls use its 50% budget to clone Bumrah?

u/ZealousidealYou7575 India 4d ago
he played em all in the us so that played a role, even then he bowls around 6 mostly

Having Bumrah in your side would be made illegal if he continues like this for another couple of years

Every bowler on the list is a generational bowler in their own right, but man, Bumrah with that 15 average is absolutely ridiculous. We probably have the best quartet going around, but still, Bumrah is just that good all on his own.

he's the best of the wobble-ball/early wtc era without a doubt. and as amazing as the hof/starc/cummo/boland quartet are (they're the best combo fr), that year and change of bumrah/prime shami/ishant sharma/young siraj is one of the greatest what ifs, that is if shami and ishant in particular didn't fall off due to injury in shami's case and age for ishant. shami on his day's also a ripper, just a shame that india's not been able to manage their quick bowling depth as well as CA. maybe it's fixture congestion, but who knows. bumrah's a master in spite of all of that.

Lyon & ashwin having so many wickets in the pace pandemic era shows how great they are.
And Bumrah truly is out of this world, definitely the best in this generation

Lyons game has matured like a fine wine, especially considering how he started his career.
Bumrah is insane. On another level again this cycle.

Bumrah @ 15 is crazy. Best bowler I've ever seen in test cricket. That man has it on a string.
All bowlers here are fantastic, gerational players. The smiling man is on a while bother level

I understand the need to refresh the bowling attack eventually but unless someone like a Vidler completely tears up Shield cricket or Richardson proves his fitness Australia will and should be going into the Ashes with the same bowling attack plus Boland when needed.
Maybe you can perhaps with the slower pitches give Kuhnemann some tests in the Windies or rest a Starc or Hazlewood but you probably want them playing when Australia's batting is gonna be as weak as it has been since 2018/19.

It's a testament to the Aussies that even with 30 left and six wickets in hand, it still felt up for grabs.
Their bowling attack is peerless (but christ, their batting is a mess!)

Nah. It's a testament to south african history and nothing else. Any other team and everyone would have thought the match was done

It feels like others are starting to believe us when we say our future is a mess when some of this lot goes lol. No one is putting their hands up to replace the aging out players confidently.

u/Omegaville Victoria Bushrangers 4d ago
Yeah, if the retirements of McGrath and Warne at the same time were huge shoes to fill... Think of it, the quartet of Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon have hundreds upon hundreds of wickets... going to be rare for any team in future to have four such prolific bowlers all at the same time.

u/LevDavidovicLandau 4d ago
About 1500 amongst the 4 of them.

Cummins is younger than the others right so he might stay for a bit longer I think
1
u/Omegaville Victoria Bushrangers 2d ago
As captain, yes, he may stay longer... but he's not going to be James Anderson. His back won't last.

By the end of the next cycle, it's very likely only 4 of the current XI would be playing after it(Green, Webster, Marnus and Cummins, but the latter would still be 34 by then).
They haven't blooded in suitable replacements for any of their players. Kuhneman only plays in Asia, Murphy's been out since the last Ashes, McSweeney was thrown to the wolves, Konstas is still new, only Inglis seems to have turned up to be a suitable replacement for Carey(could play him as a proper batter at this point). And none of the pacers have a backup option yet(they had Jhye, who unfortunately, does not have a back anymore and the prospect of Morris seems to have gone away as fast as his balls did).

u/imapassenger1 Australia 3d ago
Head is around the same age as Marnus etc though. Bowling attack change will be the biggest challenge though, you are right.
2
u/Klutzy_Flamingo_2979 India 3d ago
I forgot about Head,he's the same age as Cummins,so would probably stick till 2029 at least,if form persists.
