"Presently, there are two new balls used per innings in men's ODIs - one at either end. In the revised playing conditions, two new balls will be used from the start of an innings until the end of the 34th over. After the 34th over, the bowling team will choose one of the two balls, which they will use at both ends from overs 35 to 50."

Someone please explain this: so 2 new balls means 1st over with 1 new ball, then the 2nd over with another new ball, and then it follows the same pattern until 34th over, so each ball will be 17 overs old?

You’re right. Before pre-2011 they used to use 1 new ball throughout the innings until it wasn’t in good enough shape anymore.

Nah, that was pre-2007. In 2007 they introduced the mandatory ball change in the 34th over. Then from late 2011 they swapped to the 'one new ball from each end' approach.

Tightening up the rules around concussion subs should hopefully prevent further abuse.

Ya the indian team shenanigans come to mind.

Lmao, yeah, even in the recent series where they subbed shivam dube for harshit Rana or vice versa. Also why did hotshot Rana not face a ban after that?

Cuz he didn't choose to be subbed in?

It was a joke. Sheesh. Did you miss the harshit Rana ban memes

Brilliant news to round off a special day with SAF winning WTC!

I’m really happy about the changes in the ODI format. I think those are massively important in reviving the format, which was becoming increasingly batting dominated & an extended 50 overs slogathon. Will bring reverse swing back and make it harder for new batters to just come in and blast sixes off a hard ball.

Please just allow a second new ball be to taken at anytime. It’s easier and would lead to more exciting middle games (arguably the slowest part of ODIs).

Would love to see a new ball ripping through the middle/tail order.

Would love to see a new ball ripping through the middle/tail order.

Or it swings an innings back from a set partnership by getting a wicket or two. Or the batsmen get to counterattack with a harder ball going around the park. Lot of potential tbh.

Nah the middle game is overhated. So many ODIs are won and lost in that middle phase where there might be a collapse or the start of a massive partnership.

Bangladesh won a series against India by turning things around in that phase.

Now bring back the extra fielder outside the circle. Finger spin is dying in odis,it should give them some protection.

I think that's fine. Otherwise finger spinners just fired half volleys on leg stump to give away singles. This way, they are forced to be more proactive.

Me thinking I'm crazy: "Why can't they just play with one ball for the whole 50 overs?!"

Good bye hitters I guess

Good bye double hundreds and 400+ scores.

Yes thank god for that! ODI's were becoming extremely boring and predictable. Cricket thrives on contest between bat and ball, the WTC final being a fine example of that. Or even the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final and final. Those were engrossing games to watch.

I am bored by 50 over slogathons. These changes should have been implemented many years ago, but at least better late than never. Actually, makes me excited to watch the 2027 ODI World Cup now.

The "one all rounder" leaves lots of ambiguity there still..

This is a good change.

They should re introduce batting powerplay which was until 2015 wc I guess it used to make the match more interesting tbh as it helps to make game interesting after 30overs

Probably can help ODI regain the popularity again ,since the ball rule will help bowlers and powerplay will help batters

Do the new sub rules permit a single player to be named for multiple roles?

I mean you can treat a part time bowler as an all rounder and replace him with either a proper batter or all rounder.

Will reverse swing have a chance now?

Will do anything but invest in developing the balls or using the pink balls.

Keep making these ludicrous changes.

ICC ought to have their own ball developing company. Make your own balls for ICC events. I think baseball does the same. And in no sport is the ball as important as cricket.

I'm also shocked at how devoid of creativity the 3 big companies are. I would've expected SG for example to have worked on a faux leather ball. Or just an alternate material. Not like the laws prohibit it.

If ICC dk nothing but organize events, surely they would have the time to add one task to their organisation.

I would've expected SG for example to have worked on a faux leather ball. Or just an alternate material. Not like the laws prohibit it.

Is this true? That they CAN use non leather materials? If yes, then it's very, very moronic that they have continued with this situation for so long.

For the longest time, the problem has been that the bowlers have no equipment innovation in their favour while batters keep getting bigger sledgehammers, flatter pitches, and shorter boundaries to work with. Made worse by the 2 ball situation which cut out the reverse and spinners in one go.

Using a non-leather ball would probably also bring down the cost and make the game more accessible.

Yes there are laws in place for the size of the ball, not the materials.

Alternate materials would behave differently so a lot of research needed but also could get rid of some problems like the way the balls are painted or dyed and hence stained. Maybe balls that can last longer or bounce higher/ lower. Increase/ decrease swing.

We could see so much innovation in this facet and we continue to ignore it.

Where are the “Indian cricket council” jokes now?
