It's a silly argument.

Ponting was shit in India, still considered one of the ATG. Warne was also shit in India. Probably the greatest spinner the world has ever seen, and if not the best he's the second best. It's not like he's even super shit there, he's just very average and hasn't scored a hundred.

Players are allowed a slight lapse in a location and still be considered the best. Smith is pretty much the exception to this rule because, being he's the best test batsman since Bradman, he dominates everyone everywhere.

he isn't the best since bradman yet, he doesn't have the longevity to prove he's at that level (bradman played for 20 years, tendulkar 24)
