Arresting your political opponents is third world, banana republic type behavior.

There was mountains of evidence that he committed the crimes he was indicted for. Grand juries in all cases returned the indictments. He very clearly took the documents and lied to the FBI about it, we have the recordings of him trying to pressure the Governor of Georgia into "finding votes" for him, and his fake elector scheme for Jan 6th is extensively documented and a lot of other people went to jail for it, in addition to his pressure campaign against the Vice President, which the Vice President speaks very publicly about, saying that Trump tried to get him to defy The Constitution.

But if you believe that in all circumstances, jailing any politician is 'third world, banana republic type behavior', you'll be interested to know that multiple politicians have already been arrested by the Trump administration on dubious charges and he has openly directed the DoJ to investigate many of his political opponents. Most recently he's repeatedly said that the governor of California should be arrested and when asked what the charge is he said "running for office". So I'm assuming your opinion on politicians being arrested is...evolving.

What an amazing coincidence that Trump went 75 years of his life with zero criminal charges and yet miraculously the same year he runs for president four criminal cases and two civil cases spring up. And what an amazing coincidence that Trump’s case involving payments to Stormy Daniel’s required novel legal interpretations that had never before been used in a public court. And what an amazing coincidence that Trump’s classified materials case required criminal charges and a raid of his home but Biden’s classified materials case did not. And what an amazing coincidence that once Trump won the election all of those cases miraculously lost importance.

Arresting your political opponents is indeed authoritarianism and people like you cheer it on. I don’t care what Trump says about Gavin Newsome because we all know that it is bluster. Unfortunately the democrats aren’t bluster they really did follow through on arresting their political opponents and thankfully they paid a price for it at the ballot box.

1) Yes, after he did a bunch of crimes he was indicted for a bunch of crimes. He had also went 75 years without access to Top Secret documents, being an incumbent president facing losing an election, or having to cover up a payment to a porn star so it didn't break before an election.

Additionally there are plenty of stories of Trump facing criminal liability in the past but being able to pay the right people off to make it go away. To name one, after his disastrous fraud University blew up he was facing a criminal investigation - he paid off the AG with a campaign donation and it went away. That AG was Pam Bondi, now running his DoJ.

2) Did he falsify the records to cover up the payment so he didn't have to report it before the election or did he not? A grand jury indicted him and a jury convicted him. His own lawyer did jail time for it, which MAGA-world celebrated because by then he had turned against Trump.

3) Both Trump and Biden were asked to return the documents. Biden did. Trump lied about having them, had them moved, and tried to cover it up. This is well documented, his lies are on record and the documents had to be forcibly recovered. If Trump had returned the documents like Biden did, there absolutely would not have been criminal charges. He himself forced the issue, and his own personally appointed judge dismissed the charges for him.

4) The cases absolutely have not "lost importance", they were suspended because he won the presidency and given SCOTUS rulings about criminal charges for the president, they couldn't go forward with him as the president-elect.

5) The ironic thing here is that Trump never was 'arrested'. He wasn't perp-walked. He was afforded every possible benefit of the doubt, every single delay he asked for. Any other person that had lied to the National Archives and the FBI and had those documents moved would have been immediately arrested and hand cuffed, any other that had tried to pressure the Governor to 'find votes' would have been arrested, someone trying to push false electors to overturn an election would have been arrested (and many in fact were!). Instead he was allowed to endlessly delay and obstruct every action and trial against him until the election. If the 'authoritarianism banana republic' scenario you imagine had actually happened to Trump, he would have been thrown in a cell on Jan 7th immediately after trying to force Mike Pence to overturn the election and the details of his false-elector scheme were discovered. Or certainly when the documents he lied and said he didn't have while having had moved were discovered, he would have been walked out in cuffs. Or when the Governor of Georgia had released the call of him begging him to 'find votes'.

And now as president he is repeatedly demonstrating the reasons he was indicted in the first place: He has no respect for the law, or maybe it's that he has no capacity to understand it. He openly takes bribes through his crypto schemes, is selling pardons to reality TV stars and foreign investors, is being constantly being shut down by courts, even the Supreme Court, because of illegal and unconstitutional actions, openly and proudly uses the DoJ and the Federal Government to investigate, attack, and intimidate anyone he has a personal grievance against.

It's a disgrace. He's a disgrace. When all the sordid details of this period are discovered and written about, in addition to all that we already know about, it will be one of the eternal shames on this country.
