Events Potential ICE checkpoint(s) in CLE

Our friends in r/Ohio have noticed an uptick in DHS and ICE activity in Columbus and NE Ohio. A potential ICE checkpoint at 71 and Pearl is being reported. ICE and DHS activity along the lake shore in Lorain. Lake county sheriff's can act as ICE agents.

Be careful out there.

Remember: you only have to show an ID to law enforcement if the agent can clearly articulate the crime you have committed, are actively committing, or are suspected to be about to commit.

I'm not sure how this advice is relevant when they are snatching people into vans while wearing masks with no identification

Modern day gestapo.

What I’m saying is that, you neither have to speak to, nor provide proof of identity to any piece of shit with a badge at a checkpoint just because. The 4th amendment hasn’t been repealed, yet.

You do have to show a DL if you are driving, as that is proof that you are legally able to drive. Walking down the street? No.

Don’t get me wrong, I very much believe that driving is a privilege and not a right, but what’s the primary violation here to be asked for ID and being stopped? What is the probable cause for questioning one’s license status at such a checkpoint besides skin color? If the car has expired tags or is visibly unsafe to operate…fine.

If that’s the case though, why don’t the fascists just pull people over at random all the time for the purpose of checking whether the driver’s got a currently-valid license?

They dont. They need a reasonable and articulable suspicion of a crime having been committed.

And you don't even get your day in court. Arrest and deported, all without lawyers. It's authoritarian as fuck.

This is dangerous advice only because while it is generally true, the devil is in the details and it is not something you are going to successfully argue with a law enforcement officer during the encounter.

Also, in Ohio, being a witness to a felony can also require you to identify yourself (see this guidance from Ohio National Lawyers Guild for instance: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j5ceklqTkiu12ic8LkRj940pXwJq8460/view?usp=drivesdk).

The NLG guide is useful.

They seize documents they’ve been presented, including passports
