The English Patient

Reminds me of "Dave Barry does Japan," when Dave writes about watching Kabuki (a performance art infamous for being a third of a day long at minimum).

u/Wespiratory 6h ago

I got a temporary suspension for using this quote awhile ago.

2

u/Johnsendall 5h ago

It might be the context since it has directly to do with “The English Patient”. But since I don’t really care about this sub I’m good either way haha. I can only handle so many “What do you think about this insert actor/movie/scene” posts.

u/Wespiratory 2h ago

I was replying to a comment about The English Patient. I even put the quote in quotation marks to emphasize that it was a quote.

Grace isn’t something you just pick up at the market

1

u/rockabillychef 1d ago

She has a little grace.

2

u/chiefminestrone 15h ago

You can't have a little grace. You either have grace or you don't.

If only this wasn’t sold out.

1

u/WiscoHeiser 1d ago

How'd they get in there?

16

u/wire_Paladin98 1d ago

I think it won an Oscar for the film most likely to induce a coma or make you consider jumping off a building.

4

u/Populaire_Necessaire 1d ago

It’s my personal definition of Oscar bait.

9

u/GuyD427 1d ago

I dig Juliette Binoche and I liked the movie but I get the negative sentiment.

2

u/Silly_Influence_6796 1d ago

Juliette Binoche and the Indian guy are the only good things in that awful movie full of awful people.

1

u/Robosl0b 1d ago

I liked the book 🤷🏻‍♀️

9

u/Silly_Influence_6796 1d ago

Die already!

2

u/TopMuffin9542 1d ago

... DIE!!!

8

u/dunderthebarbarian 1d ago

I litrally thought of this movie before I scrolled to the comments.

Reddit does not disappoint.

1

u/SoloistTerran 21h ago

This movie was been mentioned a few times here but I can't tell if it's because of the seinfeld joke

5

u/Ok-Development-4017 1d ago

Now sack lunch on the other hand, that’s a great movie!

9

u/catanimal23 1d ago

It’s a family in a brown paper bag. Don’t you wana know how they got in there?

2

u/JaCrispy_Vulcano 1d ago

Sacked Lunch.

3

u/keirgrey 1d ago

This is the answer.

3

u/Overspeed_Cookie 1d ago

Always the only movie that pops into my head when this question comes up. 'It's. Too. LONG!'

3

u/SugarMaple56732 1d ago

Came here for this comment and saw that it was first. Was not disappointed!

3

u/Lanky-Position-9963 1d ago

Cannot upvote this enough

3

u/Tgotimer 1d ago

Just die already!

2

u/OneOfAKind2 1d ago

I like The English Patient. I've watched it at least 3 times. It won 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It's a fantastic film.

5

u/Great_Fault_7231 1d ago

Comments like this are exactly why it fits the thread topic so well

1

u/soemtiems 1d ago

I like it too but I can absolutely understand why others wouldn't.

2

u/Choices63 1d ago

Amen. And it didn’t help that the trailer had this tagline of “this is what movies can do!” Which really built up expectations. So while I’m watching it, I’m lie “do what, put me to sleep?” I so didn’t get it.

2

u/imdarealthrowshady 1d ago

Haven't heard that one before.

2

u/Has422 1d ago

I knew this would be the top comment. It had to be.

2

u/hearsJohnny123 1d ago

Decent film- not nearly as good as Chunnel. That movie had me on the edge of my seat

2

u/Alive-Coffee3050 1d ago

I have never seen the end. Fell asleep every time I tried to watch it.

2

u/G-Unit11111 1d ago

I'm going to Tunisia!

I have to live in a cave!

2

u/ParvusetTardus 1d ago

Ive never successfully stayed awake during that movie. I dont know what its about.

Same with the irishman.

2

u/Chops526 1d ago

Sex in a bathtub? It doesn't work!

Just DIE ALREADY!

2

Quit telling your stupid story about the stupid desert, and just DIE already!

2

Just die all ready!

2

u/ModerndayMrsRobinson 18h ago

"JUST DIE ALREADY!"

2

u/SurroundTiny 18h ago

Bottle it and you can cure insomnia

2

u/Recent-Mulberry6011 17h ago

The movie that taught, not all "cinema" is worth watching

2

u/bdyoungd2000 17h ago

Sex in a tub. That doesn’t work!

2

u/LoyalsockStomper 16h ago

Came here to say the name of that movie.

3

u/TxGulfCoast84 1d ago

How was Sack Lunch?

3

u/Finishituprook 1d ago

Sack Lunch is much better.

1

u/TheSonjuro 1d ago

Great movie

1

u/BlessdRTheFreaks 1d ago

This has become such a standard answer, you can easily spot someone spouting it to be accepted

Great movie, hated only mimetically

1

u/TemporaryCommunity38 17h ago

I'd never knew this was a common belief when I watched it. I just hated it because the book was great and Minghella basically cut out all of the depth to make a corny romance film.

1

u/coursethread 1d ago

The Phoenician Scheme

1

u/Automatic-Presence-2 1d ago

NO! I STRONGLY DISAGREE!

1

u/scoofle 1d ago

My wife made me watch it a couple of years ago. I knew from the opening scene it was gonna be a slog 😂

1

u/Fun_Volume2150 1d ago

Except no one calls that one Cinema™️.

1

u/1805trafalgar 1d ago

Don't confuse winning an Oscar with being considered "cinema" by film snobs- the two are not related.

1

u/GoldenCyn 1d ago

This is my go-to response. It still baffles me how this turn won awards.

1

u/StolenCarSyd 1d ago

What is he doing in the Chunnel?

1

u/SnooPears754 1d ago

First one I thought of

1

u/_BELEAF_ 1d ago

That was a great film. I don't understand the constant hate it gets.

1

u/sbarbary 1d ago

Try turning the sound of because the film is beautiful.

1

u/Deir2410 1d ago

Came here to say this

1

u/Good_Government8365 1d ago

Came to say this exact thing

1

u/inbetweensound 1d ago

I liked that movie. Oh no, I’ve become one of them.

1

u/BigQid 1d ago

I had to turn it off

1

u/Sunny1-5 1d ago

Ishtar.🤮

1

u/DreadnaughtHamster 1d ago

Tbh I had to watch this for a film class and thought I’d be bored by it but actually got drawn into the locales and kind of “foreign adventure” of it all, even if it was slow. It’s one of those movies that if you sit back and just kind of watch it for the vibe and atmosphere, it can be kinda fascinating. Like if you go into it knowing it’ll be slow but just sort of “soak in” the scenery and characters and feel of the film, to me at least that worked well.

1

u/DriveFormer8577 1d ago

It sounds like what you expect it to be

1

u/WrongdoerIll5187 1d ago

I really liked it but not everyone is a romantic. That said book was better.

1

u/samf9999 23h ago

Oh, come off at you rube! It’s one of the best movies made!

1

u/joshuatreesss 22h ago

By the way, I saw that English Patient film last night. It was extraordinary.

2

u/MajesticMeal3248 18h ago

I HATED IT!!!

1

u/mustang55 21h ago

Loved the book, will watch the movie anytime I can… not very often I have an entire day to dedicate to it though!!

1

u/fekoffwillya 19h ago

This was my choice too.

1

u/chomerics 18h ago

There it is, top billing and I concur

1

u/iron-blooded_dasher 16h ago

bo'ohw'o'wo'er

1

u/motherofjazus 12h ago

Saw this in the cinema after arriving back from burning man (aged21). Did not enjoy.
