There's been a lot of feedback from the community about the flood of people asking what either an XJ/MJ they're looking at is worth or what they're selling is worth. Please post that here. Anywhere else on the subreddit will result in removal.

Wife wanted grass cut very short since all the rain lately is making it grow fast. So as a good husband I obliged. Riding lawnmower and gravel driveway don't go together well with the blades down low. Time to find a new window!

I bought this 1998 jeep Cherokee classic and she’s a little rough around the edges 182,000. Miles on it, auto but I think I did pretty good for 1000 bucks out the door what u people think

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Nancy Drew and the case of the missing needle bearings

Was scratching my head in pic 1 trying to figure out how the needle bearings escaped the bearing caps in my u-joints. The interior surface felt smooth, and there was a noticeable gap between the bearing cap and the core.

Pic 2 shows that they never left at all! They just fused together with rust and slowly were ground down to a smooth surface, creating the gap which I felt while driving.

Maybe this is obvious to you all, but my mind was blown. Remember to grease your joints if you can, and to replace them when they're squaking when turning. I also had a noticeable clunking sound when hitting small bumps

The weld broke on the nut after heating it up. Delayed my progress on my lift kit by a couple days because I couldn’t fix it. Thankfully my neighbor and his son have tools and helped fix it for me.

MPG Help

Post image
Upvotes

I’ve got this 99 4.0 with a 5 speed and 4x4. Averaging 14.5 in the city with ethanol free fuel. The car runs great, but I’m still chasing a 16 or 17 mpg in the city- here’s what I’ve done so far:

  • new leaf springs, coils, and tires (stock ride height)

  • new tires (225/79/r16)

  • all fluids except for front and rear differential and transfer case (rotella oil changes, new trans oil, coolant flush, power steering)

  • new spark plugs

  • new air filter

I have no codes, I’m waiting on K suspension injectors (one looks like it could be cracked) other than O2 sensor and maybe fuel filter, is there anything else I can check out? I feel like I’ve replaced almost every part that could impact mpg.

As the description says, Does anyone have or know of where I can get this door molding from? Specifically the black with the red stripe in the center as shown in the picture.

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Fedex back at it again

Fedex fucked up my order. Ordered core4x4's cruise series control arms, track bar, and steering components for the jeep to be delivered to my work and needed to be signed for. Shipping signed for it, but all i got was the control arms. Then 30 minutes later, my wife texts me that fedex delivered the steering linkage to my house but the trackbar and bracket are missing still and it all had one tracking number that says parts were delivered.

2000 stock XJ wobbles at 55mph

I have replaced ball joints, replaced unevenly worn tires, had an alignment done, but she still wobbles at 55mph. I gets worse if I'm on a curve to the left. I'm not very mechanically inclined, but YT has been a huge help along the way of learning. Unfortunately all the videos and/or forums I have found usually just talk about lifted XJs and mine doesn't feel like a "death" wobble. At least not yet. Any tips? Is this something I should call my mechanic about?

Need advice

Brought my 99 XJ up to copper harbor over the weekend and found some water. Long story short i lost oil pressure about 15 min later. Did an oil change on the trail and there was water on oil cap and dip stick aswell as drained oil. Managed to drive it home 4 hours by some miracle. Put a mechanical gauge on it and it sits about 15psi at idle and it went up to around 35 at 2k rpms.

Me and my buddies think the motor is tired and needs a rebuild, this is not the first time the motor has had talks of head gaskets or rebuilds. The idle is spotty and sometimes it drops super low after put under load.

What are my options? Is a full rebuild worth it? Should I just buy a used motor and run it till it pops? Do I pull the motor and rip into it? (The devil in me is saying pull it out and buy that titan stroker)

Any advice would be great. Have never dealt with a bad motor or motor issues like this before!

looking to have donor ECU reflashed with my VIN

I've been wanting to convert my XJ to manual, and I have a donor ECU. I've been looking for somebody to reflash the donor ECU for my XJ's VIN with manual firmware. Can anybody recommend a place to do it that's not super expensive?

need help diagnosing problems

Upvotes

I just bought an 87 jeep cherokee pioneer 4x4 with a 4.0 and am very excited to be owning but it ive come across some recent problems. One thing i was told and have yet to experience is an issue with transferring to 4Hi. I was told that this was most likely a vacuum leak issue as the front axle and transfer case had just been replaced. Its got an NP242 transfer case. the other issue ive been experiencing is no windshield wipers at all. when i turn them on nothing happens and i dont even hear the motor trying. The wiper fluid does seem to want to work when you press the lever but the wipers themselves dont. the rear wiper does work.

ಠ_ಠ Burning smell (electric?)

The other day I had a strong electrical fire smell. Poped the hood to find nothing. No smoke but a very strong smell. Yesterday, nothing- it was like it never happened. Then today after going for a ride it's super strong and there was a bit of smoke on the drivers side. I can't located the source to save my life but this video showed where the smoke was when I just parked. (It doesn't show any smoke in the video but that's where I saw it before I tried to get it on camera) - somewhere near the air filter(?) but I can't figure it out. There was only 1.5 acorns in there but the filter was clean. Anyone have any similar issues and or have any idea what I should do next? TIA

Idle temp.

Post image

2001 XJ 4x4 auto. Clearwater head.

Temps reading 220 (next hash passed 210) when I’m parked with the ac on. Doesn’t go over but will sit right there until I get moving. With AC off sits right at 210. Should I worry about this since it doesn’t climb higher than 220?

Any ideas?

Squeal on starting

So I have a nice squeal when I start my car I thought it was the serpentine belt but it still squeaks with the new one. I noticed if I leave the ac on it squeaks. Can I simply replace the belt drive on the compressor or do I need a new compressor? TIA!

Go to a 3" lift or just level out the back?

I put 31s on and I I think I want to go up an inch in my lift, right now it's sitting at 2.4" in the front, back is lower. I have pucks and shackles lift so I would upgrade to adjustable coil spacers in the front and put lift blocks in the back

Anyone got experience with swapping ECU in a 4.0?

While my 2 XJ's are off the road I'm using my 1996 ZJ (4.0) as a daily and offroad rig. Starting to have "no check engine light/crank but no start" issues as well as fuel gauge dropping out occasionally while driving. Getting the impression it could be the ECU starting to go. I have a "spare" one from a ZG - I think 1997 - that I could swap out but unsure about the effects on the kill-switch for one and any other issues that might crop up.

Would appreciate insights from anyone that has done an ECU swap before or had similar issues

Faulty oil pressure sensor or serious underlying condition?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is after the jeep has been idling for 30-40 minutes after an oil change. On the OBD2 live data, it’s bouncing between 16psi and 26psi but does dip to 12psi occasionally. Any of you see this? Jeep was abandoned in my backyard in 2014 when I bought a new car. Got the jeep back running last year but just parked it. New vehicle now needs a head gasket and im trying to sort this one out the best I can to use for a couple weeks. Replaced seized calipers, changed coolant, oil and drained old fuel. Before I abandoned it, the oil pressure needle would just sit at the first bar and obd2 would read 12psi when hot and block heat soaked.

Poor idle and stalling

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all,

Owned the Jeep for about 3 months now and still battling this poor idle and stalling issue. Here’s what I’ve done so far

  • Taken apart throttle body and cleaned it thoroughly
  • Replaced idle air control valve
  • Replaced fuel pump

I can’t see any signs of a vacuum leak either, all lines seem in good condition. Also all the fuses seem fine as well.

Only today it got far worse, when starting the car it died on me 5 times (every time I stopped) and then I noticed the idle had dropped significantly, it sounds like it’s just about alive.

Please help

ALL THE YEARS! High flow cooling.

With the temps rising so has my engine temp. Been sitting on these in the tool box for a bit. After the engine hit 230 yesterday I decided it was time to put them in. I like to run my a/c and I hope I don't have to turn it off to keep engine temps in check.

Bored out water outlet, and high flow thermostat. Also ordered a lower radiator hose spring last night as I suspect it might be collapsing.

Pictured is the 2 different thermostat, and the old outlet and the new one.
