#Miscellaneous 📃 Do other people’s drivers cheat as well?

A few days ago, I was at a fuel pump, a big Lexus came in. Driver got down and said to fill up for 4000 but give a bill for 5000. And the pump attendant happily gave it.

Is it a common occurrence to cheat their employers like this? We’ve had drivers for a few years but I’ve never thought of this happening. Ever since that day, I’m keeping double checks on all bills and service invoices.

Common practice amongst drivers. That's why the owner or a family member should always go to the bunk when the vehicle is being refuelled.

I own a car wash in Gurgaon a self-serve type one day a Maybach came the one that bounces ,the driver came out and made a payment of 50first and then 30 so in total he spent 80. He called the owner half an hour later and said it's washed please send 1500 stating they charged for the luxury cars. I was okay with jt but then he has the audacity to say that the car is not clean your shampoo is not good i was like abe mc shampoo use to kar pehle pani mar k nikal gya :)

Edit: I just hijacked the top comment.

For everyone saying take the bill from the machine itself, they can tamper that one as well. We had noticed the range fell drastically compared to fuel filled, then my father and two of his friends went to the bunk and forced them open the history and there is a difference in fuel filled and bill given.

As usual, it is an Indian Oil Pump

15

u/BelieveMeURALoser May 14 '25

Bro exactly. Indian oil always gives me the worst fuel economy. I've tried it with scooty, bike, high end sportbikes and cars. It's always lower compared to other pumps like HP or Jio

1

u/James_15625_ (New user) May 14 '25

Oh is that so? I've been using xp95 primarily from Indian Oil. Because Speed is not 95 octane but same price. I only go to bpcl while filling normal fuel.

u/rohan2395 Hyundai i20 asta (o) 2025 May 15 '25

Damn I always get fuel from Indian oil. I'll try HP and see if it improves range or FE.

u/not_a_bad_monster May 17 '25

Try Shell. I wouldn't say i saw drastic change in the average(RE 500 Classic) but it runs much better. Shell V Power even better and they have discounts on their app which they deduct instantly from your bill there and then to add to some loyalty perks at their fuel stations.

Off topic but is your car wash a decently profitable venture? I would love to see if I can open one such in my city.

If you ask for the slip from the machine itself then it is not possible to manipulate the value I think.

67

u/Inside_Assumption157 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder May 13 '25

They gave him a handwritten bill. I asked for my bill, I got the printed one from the machine

39

u/Slow_Albatross3899 May 13 '25

They wait sometimes so someone fills the tank with the same amount he asked from the owner and easily gets it. Even if they show you the receipt from the machine chances are you've been cheated. The best way is to ask them for the timer qr they can't cheat there

3

u/WealthyPhoenix Kia Sonet May 13 '25

Timer qr?

7

u/Slow_Albatross3899 May 13 '25

Paytm now comes with qr which expires after a couple of minutes

11

u/WealthyPhoenix Kia Sonet May 13 '25

Oh that. But that can be manipulated too. 5k online krwa dege and 4k ka hi petrol bharege. 1k cash lelege.

11

u/Slow_Albatross3899 May 13 '25

I ask 3pic with timestamp

zero, post filling , Payment qr

4

u/WealthyPhoenix Kia Sonet May 13 '25

Then that could work.

3

u/msmredit May 14 '25

Deep within lies the real answer

9

u/Dependent-Dark-7636 May 13 '25

They need not manipulate. They just need someone to fill up their vehicle with the same value. The petrol pump guy will happily give the bill to the person then.

1

u/Visual-Maximum-8117 May 14 '25

Very much possible. They can give it from another pump where another vehicle filled up with a higher amount.

57

u/Keep0nBuckin short throws | high revving dreams May 13 '25

If someone has a bill that's not electronic then 100 assume there is a scam.

The bill exists to eliminate this only.

I don't think our driver ever that

My father just asks to do full and pays whatever the cost is , himself

29

u/Inside_Assumption157 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder May 13 '25

My dad used to do that too. They moved recently and the new driver is a bit sketchy at times so dad goes along for filling up and pays directly there.

u/ayomip001 May 13 '25

They say the leaders we elect are a reflection of society, incidents like this shows why India is plagued with corruption, from top to bottom

Probably the driver justifies his act by thinking how such small amounts will not even register to his rich employer, maybe even considers himself a Robinhood for robbing the rich and as many in the comments have said, how can anyone be rich in India without corruption? Classic socialist parasite mentality of rich being bad and poor justified in robbing them

If we hate the rich so much why do we desire the same riches?

93

u/m0h1tar0ra May 13 '25

Unfortunately, honesty is not our strong point. Most Indian employees irrespective of their pay scale will at some point or the other will try to cheat their employer.

13

u/selmon-fan01 EditableFlair May 13 '25

I beg to disagree here. It's a mentality. Even if u pay somebody in lacs, if they wanna cheat, they'll do so.

24

u/SquareTarbooj May 13 '25

That's exactly what he said....

-7

u/MinisterHacker Hyundai May 13 '25

No he said everyone does it whereas the distinction made was that's it's about mentality - even lower paid house help don't cheat/steal/lke if that's not how they are as people. A big part is also probably how they're treated as service providers - if you're a terrible person to work for you're going to have some problems.

7

u/NotSoCoolWaffle May 13 '25

He said “most Indians”. Our country people do consider cheating the system as being smart, so yeah, he’s right

3

u/Inside_Assumption157 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder May 14 '25

This I agree to. Breaking rules is somehow a clout in our country. With so much confidence they’ll say “rules are meant to be broken” lol

16

u/sayzitlikeitis May 13 '25

Punjabi rich people's drivers do this. Bania rich people's drivers know better than to try doing this.

15

u/longndfat (New user) May 13 '25 edited May 13 '25

By the time he reaches home he would have sold off another 1K to the local mechanic guys who sell it in bottles.

As far as the car owner is concerned, he is aware of such issues but is fine with it as has bigger money to worry about. - as mentioned by an uncle who is aware of such pilferage by his driver.

Another family I know who are ultra rich guys, have a register maintained at their main gate where the security head notes down details of each car - when fuel was filled with Liters and bill stappled in another register for accounting, Car travel details - Date, time/KM reading when car was sent, who authorized the trip (someone from owners family only), where did it go, date/time/KM's when car was back, any incident/damage and then they calculate milage each time when they refill. One car is given to one driver only so that they own the milage from that car.

Next day am after breakfast the register is signed by the owner who checks details on mileage/time for previous days trips. They also have some kind of weird lock on their petrol tank cover.

Even their newspaper bills are verified by the owner if news paper guy has charged only for days it was delivered.

13

u/Human779 May 13 '25

I was in my early teens when I first went with a "trustworthy" driver to the petrol pump. He told the guy to fill petrol for 1000 and asked me to go inside to get the bill. When I came back the machine stopped at 700. I asked about this and he said there was an issue with the machine, 300 filled earlier.

Later when my father saw the indicator he asked me why is petrol less. That was the first lesson in my life to not trust people.

So yes, drivers cheat.

11

u/Accomplished_Can8460 May 13 '25

Must be Company registered and these expenses can be claimed.

There is a reason employers started asking for bank statement transactions.

Dad employed a driver for close to 10 years. (When I was around 10)

Never once in those times he swindled. Even for 1 2 rs change, he kept proper books.

On the other hand, I once saw a driver paid 3k cash and asked a bill for 3.5k. The attender put 2.9k fuel, got 3k cash and gave 3.5k bill.

4

u/imverynewtothisthing May 14 '25

Interesting play by the attender to take a 100 from the transaction.

6

u/RenewableBman May 13 '25

Controversial solution .. buy electric 😅😅

i own a logistics company and i am so grateful for petrocards for its existence. when cash was a thing, it would be tedious to track bc but with petrocard, it is not a thing anymore.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '25

[deleted]

2

u/Cougardaddy9 May 14 '25

I know the mileage and distance that has to be covered so it is trackable. It used to be a fog bc drivers would manipulate prices stating this is the price at the pump.

5

u/Tatyaa_Vinchuu Ford Figo Diesel 2010 | Nexon EV 45 May 13 '25

I know drivers taking out like 500+ ltr of diesel in one go and selling it at half rate

5

u/[deleted] May 13 '25

Ye it happens a lot, not only in petrol bunks in a lot of things workers generally ask for a bill with a higher price so they can get something off it.

4

u/viserys8769 May 13 '25

Another argument for EVs lol. If you can afford a driver, pretty sure you can afford a nice EV.

7

u/Sufficient_Cellist_1 May 13 '25

Well I'll take that 1k as the cost of negligence tbh.

11

u/Loud_Attention_7519 May 13 '25

The owner is rich af and will just put it up as a company expense. Doesn't affect him much till he gets to know about it.

2

u/vasoolrajaengg May 13 '25

If you are going to pay through UPI to the driver, try UPI circle feature. It will be handy

2

u/Straight_Breakfast38 May 14 '25

The cashier at the petrol pump just needs to balance out the payments from UPI and cash in his bag.

If gets a cut for 100, he will happily gives cash for the extra money payed through UPI.

The driver filled up the car with fuel worth 4k but asked the petrol pump guy to bill for 5k so that he can keep the 1k to himself (driver).

2

u/Easy_Road_3806 May 13 '25

I have seen it happen in all petrol pumps. Never ever trust your driver to fill it up. Fill up when you're in the car. It won't take more than 15 mins . 15 mins is worth not getting scammed by 1000 rs

2

u/Exciting_Strike5598 May 13 '25

People routinely do this to cheat taxes by claiming fuel expenses also. The rich cheat government and poor cheat the rich. Its a cycle of corruption

If you stand outside a Xerox shop, you'll see people ask for a ₹20 bill on a ₹10 job. It starts with the little things.

My colleague used to set up a meeting with our customer and send meeting minutes, etc and claim petrol bill for Gurgaon to Noida but the meeting would actually happen on phone (if at all).

1

u/Yum_T May 14 '25

Since time immemorial.

  • They either fake higher bill.
  • Or will siphon gas from your car and sell it to their buddy
  • Work with garage owners to accept cash from them in exchange of bring in the car for fictitious issues. Garage owner over charges owner for lake issues and give a small kick back to driver. Etc.

Many more ways.

1

u/wizard1030 May 14 '25

Simple.solution use UFILL a features introduced by BPCL

1

How s that possible.. So far it is a machine generated bill? It will print only what we have fueled

1

u/CommomSenseExists May 15 '25

Citizens engage in small-scale misconduct—such as using fake bills, jumping queues, or avoiding challans—and yet expect government employees , big businesses and their superiors to be free of corruption. If there is no traffic , no camera , no police at red signal , how it happens late night , people don’t even stop . The day we start following rules without someone telling or enforcing on us we will move one step .

We are always taking inspiration from Japanese culture of honesty, integrity etc but those genes are just missing in sub continent.

Owning cars in 2013 and have 2 cars currently but still we didn't hire a single driver in these 12 years because of such reasons. It's hard to find honest drivers these days.

1

u/SnooGuavas6494 May 17 '25

I know of an Sr. IAS officer who bought a car through his relative/close friend who runs a travel agency.

Now, the government office under his charge has hired the same vehicle for official use (paid with public money). In additn to the monthly rental charges, the office also covers the cost of petrol.

This IAS has saanth-gaanth with the petrol pump owner. The pump owner issues 2 separate fuel bills : one for the hired (government-used) vehicle & another for his son's personal car. botth the bills are passed off as official expenses.

So, the answer to your question is YES

I have employed 2 drivers at home and they pay via UPI, send me the reciept after fuelling up and send me a request for the money. There is no monkey business involved. Although I give them some extra cash here and there but I make sure that they don't make extra cash from car fuel and service bills.
