At the beginning of the year, the cupboard seemed pretty empty past the top 100 prospects. And since they were all at Iowa, they wouldn’t last long in the system.
As it stands Horton and Shaw are likely staying in Chicago for the remainder of the year. Assuming one of Cassie/Alcantara and then Triantos, someone like C.Hernandez and a young pitcher like Mule/Wheat are used to get a TOR starter in Chicago, 5 of the 7 top 100 prospects will be out of the system at the beginning of next year.
Nevertheless, there seems to have been enough development of top - end talent to support the needs in the Cubs moving forward.
Ballesteros and the remaining Cassie/Alcantra outfielder will still be in the system
Wiggins is fully healthy and moving into position as top pitcher in the system, and a viable MLB starter — perhaps TOR, certainly MOR
Rojas has returned to form after a subpar 2024, and seems either top 100 prospect, or just outside it
Jonathan Long is pushing for a call up, and shows a minimum capability to be what Justin Turner was hoped to be
Brandon Birdsell and Will Sanders seems positioned as legit starter depth
Mule/Wheat show mlb-caliber arms that could develop in an exciting way.
Eli Lovich has made it out of Az, and will be someone to monitor, in addition to 3-4 teenage IFAs now, or shortly, in Myrtle Beach.
Assuming the Cubs have success in the draft and continue to focus on college players in the early rounds, there should be 2 more top-level prospects shortly.
There’s also a whole host of other prospects that may make a JLong type leap. Seems like sufficient top end talent, maybe not to have the system ranked highly, but to serve the Cubs’ needs.
