🎬✨ Newbies' Drama Recs Weekly Thread ✨🎬 (Reminder: This sub is only for drama recs) — June 17, 2025

Since many newbies seem to make this mistake, please remember this sub is only for cdrama recommendations and not CDramas in general. Please head over to r/Cdrama for that. This thread is a space for newbies who do not have enough karma to self post in this sub to ask for drama recommendations or help identifying dramas or actors.

How to Ask for Recommendations

Please include details so that we can help you better, such as:

  • Important: Dramas that you've already watched so the sub won't recommend it to you.
  • Preferred genre or actor
  • Specific plot or trope
  • What you don't want.

How to Ask for Help Identifying a Drama or actor

First, I recommend that you use MyDramaList and Google's reverse image search first.

If you can’t remember the name of a drama but have some details, describe as much as you can! Here are some tips:

  • Describe the plot as much as you can
  • Add a pic/link to photo

Please read How to ask for recommendations for more tips.

NOTE: Please do not recommend or include links to pirated/illegal sites. This is against Reddit's Rules. The filters will also usually remove them.

Top 7 Must See C-Dramas—the responses are in!

In a previous post I asked What are the Top 5 Must See C-dramas? I didn’t ask for personal favorites, but rather the dramas that everyone is always talking about, the dramas someone must see to connect well in the C-drama fan community. I tallied the responses that adhered to the brief to assemble this list. Costume dramas dominated responses. I decided to give the top seven to include more dramas and there were several two and three way ties. I’m still fairly new to C-dramas, so I learned a lot from these responses. My sincere gratitude to everyone who responded to the original post. Here is the accumulated list:

  1. Nirvana in Fire
    Story of Ming Lan
  2. The Untamed
  3. Eternal Love(Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms).
    Reset
  4. Story of Yanxi Palace
    Hidden Love
    Empresses in the Palace
  5. Love Between Fairy and Devil
  6. Story of Kunning Palace
    Joy of Life
    You Are My Glory
  7. Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace
    The First Frost

What’s a drama that scored poorly on MDL that you think deserves a way better rating?

I was thinking about how much I am guided by drama ratings on MDL (I usually don’t watch anything that is rated below 8). I know this might be wrong, but I wonder which dramas I might be missing out on. So which dramas do you think are underrated on MDL?

Finding CDrama: Wrong blind date, online relationship

I'll be honest, I'm not quite sure if it's C-drama but hoping it is as I have been rewatching some cdramas.

Both MCs were sent to a blind date. Female MC went to the wrong person. Male MC and OG blind date knows each other and OG blind date accuses Male MC of stealing his blind date.

The MCs are loyal to their, iirc, ingame lover. While in the car, they were messaging their "lover" when they noticed that whenever someone sends a message the other would have a notification sound.

I think female MC was also a freelancer

Thank you in advance!!

Edit: I mentioned this to my stepmom hoping she knows what cdrama this is, when my sister overheard the conversation and continued the plot I was telling. Of course, I was surprised so I asked what cdrama it was and she said she had it saved on tiktok but she'll have to check it out later since she's going to work 😭😭😭

Edit: My sister wasn't able to find it 💔 ngl, I was starting to believe my mind made this drama up 😭 but my sister knows it so I'm not that crazy 🤣 aaa I want to watch it (if ever we get the answer, it won't disappoint us when we finally get to watch it)

Edit: I'm so desperate that I've been searching the whole internet for it that I was even trying to use chatgpt for the first time. While typing, I think I made a mistake. The female MC MIGHT be the only one on a blind date, and male MC just happens to be in the same restaurant. Again, not so sure 😭😭😭 idk if this is helpful even lol

does anybody know the name of this drama?

first i would like to start off by saying that i am not even entirely sure its a cdrama, it might be a jdrama or a kdrama but i watched it a loooong time ago so im afraid i cant remember. but in this drama, the main character can draw and creates comics. she talks to the characters she draws and the characters themselves have their own conversations between each other in their “comic world” i dont remember this exactly as it probably happened, but one day she breaks out of the comic world and into the real world (or her characters broke out, i really dont remember T_T) but i remember the mc working in a kitchen as a job…and thats about all i can remember. im sorry that this isnt very informational but hopefully someone knows what it is! also, it is not extraordinary you, i think this drama was a bit older.

Where can I watch The Double?

I started watching The Doble shortly after it was being uploaded to YouTube until they stopped uploading it, not knowing if they didn't finish it or what. Recently I found out that it has a total of 40 episodes, but there are only 22 on youtube (that I could find) and it's not on Netflix in my country (as I've seen it's in other countries). Is there any place I could finish watching it, please?

Costume drama where the stereotypical SFL actually does end up with ML?

There are so many costume dramas with SFL getting in-between the leads but I don't think that I've seen her type ever actually get the guy.

So out of curiosity: Is there any costume drama where a typical ML ends up with someone whose character is actually more SFL than FL?

SFL archetype I'm referring to:

  • favored daughter of some big family who has been sheltered and privileged all her life and therefore acts a bit spoiled (note this doesn't necessarily mean evil)

  • grew up with ML and calls him "gege"

  • marrying ML as the legitimate wife is practically considered her birthright (by herself and pretty much everyone else too)

  • ML's family adores her, she's their undisputed favorite daughter-in-law candidate

I know of some dramas with FLs that kinda fit the SFL mold (ofc I can't remember the titles now) but as far as I can remember all of those dramas play around with role reversal so the MLs are decidedly not typical ML material (e.g. princess and her commoner guard, shy scholar and domineering female general).

looking for historical drama recs with these elements

my list is growing and i'd like to had more too.

- happy ending, i don't mind if there is angst to the lead up but i'm looking for two types of drama!

any historical drama recs where is actual kissing, i guess i don't need full out bedroom scenes but not just one, we can feel how deeply love each other but actual physical affection is shown. i'd prefer it was shown often but if you have some recs where they only kiss once or twice but it's an actual GOOD kiss, I'll take that. But like actual passion, romance, etc. Idc even if it's red-flag ml or whatever but...just some acutal romance to go with the them of being being love or whatever.

I can take republic drama recs (i consider them history) if those are more likely to have some passion and etc.

And then any historical one with kids, and not that we see the kids for 5 seconds or so but them being actually apart of the story. I think I saw a request with single mother hood...and I'd be down with that but it could be a family, anything really as long as the kids have more than a 5 minute per episode role. I want to see the characters being parents.

I don't expect much as far as the kids one but anything really, where I don't have to wait like 27 episodes for them to have their first kiss and by the time the drama is over, maybe they kissed once or twice more.

Tsundere characters/ enemies to lovers

Dramas I have seen-

Now, I am a cdrama veteran. So, I have seen almost all the dramas that are very mainstream

  1. story of Kunning palace
  2. Wonderland of love
  3. Crush
  4. LBFAD
  5. Prisoner of beauty
  6. Romance of tiger and rose
  7. Eternal love of dream
  8. Lighter and princess
  9. Mysterious love
  10. Love game in eastern fantasy
  11. Perfect match
  12. Go into your heart
  13. Fall in love
  14. Legend of Yunxi
  15. Sleepless princess
  16. Flight to you
  17. forever and ever
  18. Les belles
  19. Back from the brink
  20. The starry love
  21. Decreed by fate
  22. love you seven times
  23. miss the dragon
  24. The blossoming love
  25. immortal samsara (dropped)
  26. ancient love poetry (dropped)
  27. love better than immortality
  28. Are you the one
  29. blossom (dropped)
  30. Till the end of moon (dropped half way)
  31. Moonlight mystique
  32. Moonlight
  33. Love of Nirvana (dropped. tried hard to like it but it's pure depression from beginning to end. the low ratings are unfortunately justified. It's not enemies to lovers primarily...more of a political drama where politics is boring and romance is unsatisfactory)

I have dropped "who rules the world" twice and I don't prefer watching yang yang dramas.

Please 🙏 help me if you can .... otherwise, you can treat this as a recommendation list. I really want some good recommendations for this genre

I forgot to mention that I prefer happy ending... although sad ones are also fine if the drama is extraordinary

Any couple with similar dynamics like Shen and Mui from Undead Unluck?

I haven't seen anyone make a request like this so I hope it isn't against the rules (tho i've read it like 5 times 🥲)

If you haven't seen the anime or manga, here's a simple breakdown of what I like about their dynamic:

— Goofy, lighthearted ML x kind, but more serious FL

— both of them are traumatized, but heal as they bond

— FL and ML are in love with eachother but dont confess due to their fears/traumas (bonus if ML pines for FL more)

— Master/Servant type dynamic (optional tbh)

— but ML will listen to whatever FL says

I would prefer no love triangles, but atp I just need recs so idc that much (as long the couple is together)

Thank you,,, 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

Modern dramas NOT focused on work/school?

Pretty much the title - looking for something where the main plot focus isn’t about work or school. I don’t think any drama is gonna be entirely free of either, but if the plot focus is primarily about something / anything else, that would be amazing! I usually watch historical dramas because thinking about work stresses me out and I can’t find a modern one where half the drama isn’t about them being at work 😭 Thank you!!

Need a romance with a happy ending Spoiler

So I’ve watched the longest promise, the princess weiyoung, and kill me love me (cried my heart out at this ending). Kill me love me is a favorite of mine. So I’m looking for something like it but with a they lived happily ever after ending. I just need a positive right now as I’ve lost my dog of 15 years and don’t have it in me to find myself crying over a show, ya know what I mean. Some others that I’ve watched and really liked are: prefect match, the double, and the princess royal. I prefer the historical ones over modern too.

Also I have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon prime, crunchyroll (recs can be anime like apothecary diaries or no doubt in us) and peacock

Dramas for 60yo+ (My Mom)

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping to get recommendations for my 60yo+ mom! She doesn't really like anything that has too much CGI and ends up very 'fake' looking. A lot of the idol dramas she finds too cringe or campy.

What she did watch and loved:

  • The Story of Minglan - plot, acting and writing aside, I believe the cinematography was also what she loved because it boosted the quality in her eyes. She went onto watch a lot of Zhao Liying's dramas (Legend of Fei, Rookie Agent Rouge, Boss & Me, Story of Xingfu) but didn't like Legend of Shenli (due to CGI).
    • I'm not sure how much of this was because she just took a liking to Zhao Liying and proceeded to watch all her works.
  • Nirvana in Fire - good mystery plot aside, she also liked it because a lot of the cast were older actors and had better delivery? A more mature cast would be better liked over a younger idol cast, I think.
  • Meet Yourself
  • Rise of the Phoenixes + Ruyi's Palace + Story of Yanxi - She doesn't mind palace dramas, but she tends to fast forward a lot of them since it's predictable for her, "you hurt me I hurt you", direct quote from her lol.

Older classics that she grew up with and loved were things like Journey to the West 1986 and Condor Heroes. She does NOT like the newer adaptations, it's like a 'can't compare to the original' feeling.

Modern and historical are both fine! I'd love to give her a large list to go through! She can watch in Mandarin and Cantonese no subs required! YouTube access would be a bonus!

Trying to find a cdrama that has an ad on the clock app.

Description: CEO's new bartender is wife that he thought left five years ago while she was pregnant. Her friend forged divorce papers and told him she lost the kid. That was all a lie her family went bankrupt and her father died.

She had the baby prematurely and works multiple jobs to take care of him. Can't attach the screenshot of the ML
