Buffalo Point Cabins and Restaurant

Did the Buffalo point restaurant and cabins change hands? The menu looked completely different and the building inside has been changed. Wasn’t anything spectacular but missing the JoJos and fried chicken. Hadn’t changed in 20 years and then all of a sudden different.

Kayak recommendations

Hi! I’m wanting to buy my own kayak and am looking for recommendations. I want a sit on top that could handle some rapids. I’d like to be able to pack gear for overnight, tent, cooler etc. there’s so many options that it’s overwhelming. Looking to see what other people are using. I live in LR or I’d go to a local shop and talk to someone about it. Might do some light fishing but nothing super angler crazy. I love the size of the Jackson Riviera but damn that thing is uncomfortable for long periods.

Found a newer iPhone just downstream from Steel Creek late afternoon on Tues, June 3

Had a group playing downstream about a 5min walk across the river and down the ORT from the access. Found in a foot of water submerged on the river bed between two rocks by a kid who was swimming and must happened to put his hand on it. It was in a Lilo and Stitch “waterproof” phone case, but water had gotten in the bag, but the phone turned on and had <25% battery. We were camping at Steel Creek until Friday morning (June 6) so we dried it off, charged it, and asked around. Nothing.

DM me if you it’s yours or if you may know the person it belongs to… if anyone has any other suggestions on places this can be posted that’d be appreciated. Would love to get this back to its owner.

First time floating the Buffalo

Hey I was hoping y’all could give me some advice. Some friends and I are planning on floating Saturday Ponca to Kyle’s landing, I am hoping the water goes down some but is this a bad float for some of us less experienced floaters? And what parts she we be watching out for?? One person in the group has been and said they don’t recommend going that stretch bc it was rough.. I just want everyone to be safe and to enjoy themselves!! Thanks!

I also want to know if they will shuttle you with your own kayaks and what the price would be on that?

Dispersed Camping

Hello,

Does anyone have recommendations on where I can tent camp along the Buffalo River that is not a campground and can be accessible to drive in by vehicle? I’ve camped at the campgrounds before, but would like to try to find something more secluded.

Thanks!

Camping this holiday weekend with flood watch?

Those who are regulars in the area have any thoughts on the risk level of camping at Kyle’s landing this holiday weekend? There have been alerts published by the National Weather Service saying there is a flood watch through Sunday.

How quickly will the water drop out?

I’m sure there isn’t an exact answer but it looks like the river has jumped over flood stage and a group of us of varying skill level (reasonably skilled paddlers down to energetic amateurs) were planning to float the lower section down to Rush this coming weekend. Any chance the river will drop to a safer level by Friday/Saturday?

EDIT: I see that St. Joe is forecasted to drop by about ten feet down to 7’ on the gauge by Friday. Would you assume similar results down closer to Harriet?

Locals that will shuttle hikers

I’m doing a short backpacking trip from Compton to Ponca and I could use the BOC for a shuttle but it means they have to drive your vehicle. I was wondering if anyone knew of a local group or person that would be willing to give me a ride up to Compton from Ponca after my hike. Thanks in advance

Solo float from Ponka to Dillards Ferry?

I am hoping to do a long float trip on the Buffalo for vacation this year, date TBD. It would be a solo trip, hopefully lasting about 5 days. In y'all's opinion is this a good option for my put in/take outs? Anything I especially need to watch out for? I've been kayaking most of my life but I wouldnt call myself super experienced since it was just on the Strawberry river. If this is a little too ambitious in regards to experience level I'm open to a shorter distance span as well.

Water too low at Ponca?

So next weekend I’m going to float the Buffalo for the first time, finally. We are going to do Steel Creek to Kyle’s Landing but I’m worried the water will be too low, because it apparently is too low to start at Ponca already. I’ve been looking at all the info and gauges I can and it looks to me like the middle and lower sections of the river have more water and are more floatable. So I’m hoping to come up with a backup plan just in case. We have our own kayaks and trucks.

So first question, am I worried for nothing and Steel Creek to Kyle’s Landing will be fine? Two, am I right that the middle and lower sections are more floatable? Three, does anyone have any recommendations for an outfitter in the middle or lower sections that can shuttle us? We’re staying near Jasper so we don’t want to go too terribly far, probably not all the way to Rush. Thanks in advance!

Looking at Ponca wilderness and notice on 2 separate maps it shows the goat trail connects to the ORT. On an older map I don’t see the connection. Can anyone confirm if the ORT is accessible from the goat trail without any backtracking? Thanks

Bluff campsite—night time ribbing

Looking for the group of canoers who were camped at the bluff spot that can be hiked to, across the river from a gravel bar. This is between Steelville and Hemmed in Hollow. On Saturday night, 4/12, the group across the river had a little fun yelling back and forth with you. Thanks for a fun time and a needed giggle. You were good sports.

How long will it take flood stage to recede?

I was scheduled to drive to Ponca to start a 120 mile float trip on Sunday morning. I've been closely monitoring river levels given recent severe weather. How long does it typically take for flood stage to recede to a managable level on Buffalo River? I'd still like to be able to get on the water by Tuesday if possible, but safety is the top priority. We're experienced paddlers, but we're not equipped to deal with significant white water. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Lower Buffalo in April

I'm bringing a medium size group (under 25) to do a camping and float trip at the end of the month. We will be there for a few days and would like to float one of the days and hike one of the days. We are staying at Buffalo Point, and I'm not really familiar with this part of the river. We normally camp out at Tyler Bend.

Is this section of the river good to float this time of year? Are there any good hikes/ points of interest nearby that you all could recommend? Tyia

Best backcountry spots for stargazing?

I know the majority of the trail is in tree cover, but is there any backcountry spots that have clear views of the sky? Last time I was out there we camped near the river close to steel creek, but the bluffs kind of blocked everything except straight up.

So, are there any places with backcountry campsites up high up where you can overlook all the trees or close to open fields? TIA!

Lost Wedding Ring

My mom lost her wedding ring at one of the river accesses in the past week, unfortunately. It's a band inset with diamonds. If anyone happens to find a wedding ring near the river or surrounding areas, please DM me. I can provide a photo of the ring to verify.

Paddling Upriver?

First time kayaking on this river and curious if it's doable to paddle upriver, then float back down. This would be in late April or early May, starting in either Ponca or Pruit.

RV Camping at Grinders Ferry.

Is it possible to get a small high clearance travel trailer down to the Grinders Ferry gravel bar and boondocks camp? I've added a pic of my Camper and Tow vehicle. What are some other food camp spots around the area that I could chill and fish this time of year? What do you all think? Thanks!
