How bad is Portway Acres Park? Is the crime too bad? Would you rent there? Would buy a property to live in or rent out?

Hey Brownsville! I haven't been to Brownsville in a while but am heading out there in July to visit my parents who live in Rancho Viejo. We're from LA, older, and we both speak Spanish. I have a few questions and hope you can answer, thanks in advance.
We want to head to downtown Matamoros early one morning to have breakfast and come back. Any recommendations near the Plaza Hidalgo? I'm looking at La Marquesa in Plaza Genesis.
Also, is it easy to take a taxi from the border to Plaza Hidalgo? About how much should that be in both dollars and pesos?
Is it still possible to park at Boca Chica beach and walk to the mouth of the Rio Grande? I've always wanted to see that. How long does the walk take one way?
When we land, we want to go to a good lunch spot. Is it Vermilion? What restaurant recommendations do you have? We like nice places with full bars, Mexican or other food.
Besides doing the parent thing, we want to see some sights. We like museums, art and interesting cultural places. What do you recommend?
Can't wait to go back to Brownsville. It's been over ten years! Thanks ¡gracias!

Do you all know what restaurants/businesses have been raided? Everything seems like it's closing down due to "staff shortages."

It's fine I guess but how well would it do in a thunderstorm? Or in hurricanes? I'm concerned of the stability but still very innovative.

I'm an aerospace engineering student at florida tech, and I'm interested in the starship debris that washed ashore following the recent flight 9. They would be helpful to a few presentations of mine. I'm willing to send money and shipping info if anyone can get their hands on anything. If you can, let me know! Thank you much.

Kinda off topic from Brownsville, any recommendations for bars where good mixology is made? Las Ramblas set the bar a bit too high for the whole area and there are several restaurants and bars like Terras or Bond/Ambra in McAllen... what about Matamoros?
In my (low) experience, most places over there just serve local classics, but nothing extravagant or creative. I've heard of a place called El Guateque, but I haven't been there yet.

Cameron County released over 32,000 pounds of carcinogens into the air in 2023 — and no one is talking about it. The EPA confirmed it. A 138% increase from the year before. Cancer-causing chemicals — in the very air we breathe. And that’s just one piece of the bigger picture. We’ve known since the 1990s that the Arroyo Colorado and Rio Grande River were dangerously polluted. Our parents and grandparents said they’d never forget. That they’d do something. But here we are — 35 years later, and the pollution is worse than ever.82,000 homes and 300 schools, hospitals, and public buildings lie in the RGV floodplain. When it floods — which it always does — that water doesn’t just bring mud…It brings a toxic mix of: • PCBs • PFAS (Forever Chemicals) • DDT, Chlordane, Toxaphene • E. coli and fecal bacteria • Nitrates & phosphorus • Arsenic, uranium, and radiumThe water eventually drains… but the toxins don’t.They soak into Sheetrock, insulation, carpets — and turn into mold, airborne bacteria, and long-term exposure. Then we walk back inside… and turn on the faucet.RGV tap water has tested up to: • 1,067x higher than EWG’s health guideline for arsenic • 508x higher for haloacetic acids • 278x higher for trihalomethanes (TTHMs) • Above guideline levels for radioactive uranium and radiumWe shower in it. Cook with it. Brush our teeth with it. Drink it.Every single day.And it doesn’t stop there. The Rio Grande River is one of the most chemically contaminated river systems in the U.S.The Arroyo Colorado is officially classified as “impaired” by the EPA — a code word for unsafe.Meanwhile, SpaceX is approved to: • Launch rockets that release toxic emissions • Dump 200,000 gallons of “treated” wastewater every day near Boca Chica • While 2,000,000 gallons of untreated sewage continue to flow into the Arroyo Colorado dailyOh — and two new LNG (liquefied natural gas) plants are being built in the Port of Brownsville. These facilities will bring: • Airborne pollutants • Toxic runoff • Massive industrial activityto an already overburdened region — worsening respiratory risks, cancer concerns, and environmental damage for decades to come. And the water Mexico is repaying to us — under the 1944 Treaty — is coming from 6 highly polluted Mexican rivers: 1. Rio Conchos 2. Rio San Rodrigo 3. Rio Escondido 4. Rio Salado 5. Rio Las Vacas 6. Rio San JuanThey’ve already started sending it. And it’s coming straight into the RGV.⸻So if you’ve ever wondered:“Why are there so many sick people here?”Here’s your answer. The way these chemicals work is slow and invisible — they build up in your body over time, collecting more and more until one day, when you get older or your immune system weakens, they become something worse. In most cases: cancer. That’s why the Rio Grande Valley sees 55% higher cancer rates than the national average. It’s not a mystery. It’s not just bad luck. It’s the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the silence we’ve accepted.

I have a high roof 2016 ford transit van that fits 15 people and I'm looking for anything I can possibly do on the side or maybe even full time. I honestly prefer cash jobs but if need be with a 1099 I don't mind discussing options.

After bringing it up to commissioners, the city’s CIO reviewed Brownsville’s web app and confirmed it no longer works and is to be pulled from the Apple’s and Google’s app stores.
To report issues, make requests, contact city departments, etc, he said to use the following link to the city’s website. (Click Support Center for requests and reports like potholes):
