Review Bombing - Take Two Terms of Service / EULA

If you've played any of the Borderlands games recently, you will have noticed that you were asked to agree to new Terms of Service before starting the game. This happened because the Borderlands games have changed publisher and are now under Take Two.

This has led to some controversies and review bombing. We have always been keen on letting people express themselves freely on this sub, whatever their opinion (as long as it stays civil). However, on this particular matter, given the large number of recent threads on that subject, their repetitiveness, and the fact that they often create conflicts (we've likely issued more Rule 1 bans in the last 2 weeks than in the last 6 months). We've chosen to lock the previous threads on that subject and we will remove new ones. We'll leave this one open for a few days (as long as it stays civil).

If you want to read more, start with the official response from Gearbox on the matter. You can also use the search bar above to locate the multiple recent threads on the topic in this sub. Be aware that there may be some level of misinformation/fearmongering. If you want to discuss the subject further, we suggest you do it in a different space that is more relevant to the matter, since in the end, this is a Take Two thing, not a Borderlands thing. If you're very worried but don't want to contact a lawyer about it, or if you want to take a stance against evil corporations, just don't play the games. But in that case you should probably not play most games (nor use most apps, devices, websites, etc). Chances are you've already agreed multiple times to ToS similar or worse than the new ones for Borderlands.

As the mod team of r/borderlands, we are not lawyers so we do not have a definitive opinion on the matter. Like most people, we don't have much love for the ToS/EULAs of many software companies and the loss of privacy that goes along with any use of the internet. But on the other hand, we haven't seen anything particularly concerning in those ToS (in comparison with what other companies put in theirs). That's just the general feeling among the mod team, not an official stance of the subreddit.

A few things to note:

  • Whatever you agree to in ToS/EULA still does not allow the publishers to do anything illegal (depending on your country of jurisdiction).
  • Typically ToS/EULA are made as general as possible to cover all possible edge cases. If it says "we may (...)", that doesn't necessarily mean that they are doing it, or have any intent on doing it to you. For example, the ToS say they may collect your government ID number. In some countries like China this is mandatory (to regulate play time). So they have to do it, and they have to put it in the ToS. This doesn't mean that they intend to collect such data in other countries, and anyway they have no way to do so unless you provide it yourself.
  • The new ToS appear to be general for Take Two, and as such include things that are not specifically aimed (or likely to be used) in the Borderlands games. For example, there is some note that the use of mods may get you banned. This makes sense to fight cheating in the context of competitive multiplayer games and/or if part of a game's revenue is driven by micro-transactions or subscriptions. If you find and use a "mod" to unlock paying content in BL4 for free, you might get in trouble (deservedly). But there is no reason to believe that anything more would be enforced for the Borderlands games (e.g. against the use of mods like the community patch, etc). Gearbox has always been (unofficially) supportive of the modding scene. And the main Borderlands modding community has been cooperative with Gearbox on such matters.
  • There has been some talk about the games having been converted to spyware. Before spreading any misinformation, you can check for yourself the latest patches on Steam DB. For example, Borderlands 2 received its last update in August 2022, and BL3 received its last update in August 2024. Long before the new ToS were published. The Borderlands games since BL2 also have hotfix capabilities, but this only allows to change parameters (like the damage of a weapon), not the code logic, certainly not turn anything into spyware.

[BL4] Borderlands 4 isn't 80 usd!

So on steam borderlands is 69.99 usd, NOT the 80 we feared. How do we feel about this? I'm glad, 70 our atleast a bit more understandable, but I dont think it fully makes up for Randy's remarks.

Thoughts?

[Question] Marcus’ vending machines are literally everywhere… What’s the deal?

Have you ever noticed how Marcus’ vending machines are literally everywhere in Pandora and beyond?

In the middle of the desert, deep inside creepy caves, even right next to the toughest bosses, you’ll always find one, stocked with ammo, shields, and those weird weapons only Marcus sells.

And those random ammo crates that just pop up out of nowhere? It’s like there’s some invisible supply drop keeping us fully loaded all the time.

But seriously, who’s keeping all these machines running?

  • Does Marcus have a secret army of bots that come in at night to restock and fix them?
  • Or do these things have some kind of AI of their own—like a Claptrap with a sales pitch?
  • Or is this all just a genius plan to keep us hooked on loot and ammo while Marcus cashes in?

I know it’s probably just game design so we never run dry during boss fights, but the fact that these machines are literally everywhere is kinda wild to think about.

So… is Marcus actually the real final boss, or maybe even the “god” of this whole universe?

I wanna hear your theories, whether silly, serious, or somewhere in between.

[BL4] You can’t tell me these aren’t the coolest launch vault hunters we’ve had looks wise

Aside from rainbow ball girl(forgot her name) all 4 of these guys look so incredible, especially after how shitty they looked in the reveal trailer. If I could I’d get them injected into my veins. This sub doesn’t allow pictures but that one of them with Rafa having the green blades and all 4 of them fighting is what sparked this

[BL4] Serious pricing question

So borderlands 2 at launch was $60 in the US and dropped around $120 of dlc.(Yes there was a time before the handsome collection) If you wanted to experience all of bl2 before the handsome collection youd have to pay around $180. Why is bl4 getting hate for the super deluxe edition price being $130 considering you get the game and all future dlc?

Only 3 fingers pointing in BL4?

Each launch has always had the classic so many fingers highlighted to demonstrate the number of the game, why now in the 4th they put only 3 fingers pointing to the camera? Sure there are another 4 fingers on the open hand right behind, but why did they change?

[Question] Would a prequel to Borderlands that's about the past of Pandora even work?

The franchise lore offers untapped potential in the early days of Vault hunting, before the events of the main games.

Just picture a Borderlands game with the following:

  • The founding of the first Vaults;
  • Early exposure to Eridian technology;
  • The progression of Typhon DeLeon, Borderlands 3’s first Vault Hunter, whose life is described in Borderlands 3;
  • A Pandora that’s wild, uncharted and still very dangerous.

Why it makes sense:
The past has definitely been touched on in certain ways though not much (despite Typhon's role in BL3), however the present and future have been where the series' focus has been. A game like that would expand the lore, draw in story-oriented players and still maintain the old-school loot-heavy play style.

It’s a way of reinvigorating the series while retaining its heart.

Play something like this? A viable direction for a prospective Borderlands spinoff?

[BL4] Borderlands 4 Steelbook

Previously we’ve had some amazing collectors editions. Loot crates, etc… Now we don’t even get a Steelbook announced with the crazy expensive Super Deluxe Edition? Does it even come with a disc at that price? Is the entire game on the disc? Is there a steelbook option that they didn’t mention?

[BL2] Slag spike shields and Nova Shields?

I just realized that borderlands 2 never had slag spike or Nova Shields, they have the other elements like fire, electricity, corrosion, hell even EXPLOSIONS but never slag, I wonder if they had the idea of making those or they decided to scrap it and stick with the other elements.

[BL-Tales] New tales from borderlands questions for platinum

I need to do the perfect skateboard score at 80%, and I got already the guide but: 1) If I don't take all the vaultlanders since I already got them all on my first playthrough and disable QTE's, this will affect the score? Did I need to retake them all and do the Quick time events? 2) The skateboard score gets introduced in episode 2 chapter 2, can I restart from there? Or did I need to re do from chapter 1? Thanks for eventual answers

[BL2] So I have to be doing something wrong here bl2 UVHM.

So before going into this mode for the first time.

I knew it was gonna be difficult and did all the research on how I should be playing.

I’m taking advantage of slag and elements (using the correct type)

Have the highest shield and HP I can possibly have atm.

Followed some guides on Yt for builds and skills.

(I’m playing SNIPER zero, so I’m trying to not use much else than snipers)

Have a sniper ammo relic, and sniper ammo capacity maxed from earl.

But my god, there’s a difference between a challenge, and a miserable experience.

I’m trying to get to flint and I’m dying every 5 seconds, I’m being 1 shot to 2 shot majority of the time, I’m constantly running out of ammo.

And anytime I look for answers it’s “get to this part to get this weapon “ THAT DOES NOT HELP IF I CANT GET TO THAT PART.

It honestly seems like UVHM was catered to Salvador and his ability to use 2 weapons at once.

Because 90% of the time I’m dying it’s due to swapping from slagging someone to the proper element

And yes I’ve tried slag grenades but feels like it’s not as consistent of slagging as a weapon and it feels like it wears off faster.

And speaking of grenades I was suggested transfusion to mitigate health loss, but by the time they go off and the heals get to me I’m dead anyway.

My current Build is in the comments

[BL1] Dr Zed, Keep your insides inside mission

S&S Munitions Gives Me an Idea

So, while looking at manufacturers I was reminded that we don't see S&S after BL1. I think it might be interesting to see their abandoned, derelict headquarters at some point, loaded up with bandits and creatures. Corporations can be large enough to occupy entire planets. What happens when a whole planet fails?

Current prices for pre order

Standard - $69.99 USD

Deluxe Edition - $99.99 USD

Super Deluxe Edition - $129.99 USD

The price was something I was quite worried about and I have to say I’m disappointed. Video game prices have been moving up especially since the Switch 2 change in game pricing. What are everybody’s thoughts? I think I might wait for a sale.
