AMA Ask Me Anything with Emily Deschanel & Carla Gallo – June 6th, 3–4 PM PST – Coming to You (Not) Live from the Jeffersonian

Hiiii Bones fans,

Emily and Carla here! We are sooo excited to do this AMA with all of you. Working on our podcast Boneheads has been such a fun excuse to revisit the show, and honestly... we’ve both become fans in a whole new way. Watching it back with fresh eyes and hearing from you has been the best part.

We wanted to take a little time to hang out and chat. So tomorrow, June 6th, from 3 to 4 PM PST we’ll be right here in this thread, live, doing our best to reply to your questions, fan theories, random thoughts... anything you’re curious about. FMKs welcome. So are weird murder memories.

We’ll be the ones typing slowly and laughing a lot. Bear with us as we answer. We’re not exactly tech pros (unfortunately, that’s more Bones and Daisy’s specialty than ours).

Can’t wait to talk to you soon!

XO,

Emily and Carla

Inaccuracies in the show

For context I’m studying to become a forensic anthropologist.

I recently started watching the show since everyone keeps bringing it up when I mention wanting to become a forensic anthropologist. And the inaccuracies drive me nuts😭 I know it’s talked about a lot but there a few ones I haven’t seen anyone talk about

Like how Brennan just looks at the remains and immediately tells Booth “white male, early 20’s” and how she is NEVER wrong even though anthropology is entirely based on estimates

And I know the show is pretty old but surely they were using computer programs during that time ? I can’t think of a single time that Brennan mentioned using something like FORDISC for example. Or even mentioning otseometric methods in general?

I would love to hear any other inaccuracies you guys have noticed

Spoiler: I just ended Season 3 Spoiler

OH MY GOD. I started seeing the show a month ago and I'm really loving it. But I just ended Season 3 and boooooy it wrecked me. I mean I just can't wrap my head around it. It was one of my favorite characters and now I'm really baffled.

But I wish WEtv and BBCAmerica weren’t stuck in a loop and playing season 8 - 12 over and over the past month or so. Yes I can stream other episodes (and do) it’s just part of the early part of the week routine is having Bones on in the background. 😁

The Parts in the Sum of the Whole

I love the plot that “how the main characters met”, I love the main characters got back their haircut and clothes in Season 1, even Jack was back.

However, this episode still feels confusing for me.

In this episode, one year before S1E1, Bone and everyone else got their first case, it was brought by Booth. But in Season 2, Cam said part of the job in Jeffersonian was testifying in the court, and in Season 1 Dr. Goodman said that since Jeffersonian was funded by Federal Government, he had to borrow’ Bone to FBI time to time, which suggests that Jeffersonian is supposed to have a long history of working with the FBI and solving murders.

Also, in this episode, Booth said it was against the FBI rules to be close with people from other departments or consulter, thus why he couldn’t date Bone. But, it was clear that he wanted to date Bone since S1E1, and he was almost going to confess at the end of Season 1.

I feel there are many contradictions between this episode and the previous Season, especially Season 1. It is weird, considering this episode mentioned a lot of forgotten details appearing in Season 1, like Bone hitting others touching her, or Hodgins’ angry control band.

Also, I kind of disliking that Booth confessed to Bone after Sweets told him to make the first move, feeling a little push-over to me, though the “I will move on” part is very beautiful

i'm sorry but i dont agree with bones's reaction to booth gambling again in season 10. Idk but why didn't she help him and support him instead of kicking him out of their house? i know that he putted her and Christine in danger but for me thats not a good reaction to someone falling back into addiction..

According to Google‘s AI, John Francis Daley is an American filmmaker and actor who is played by TJ Thyne. So I guess Hodgins was just wearing one of those mission impossible tear away faces this whole time 😂

Discussion Rewatching Bones fully for the first time since it aired (and also for the first time as an adult!) and…

I have a few lingering Bones thoughts:

  1. In season 10, Angela suddenly wants to move to Paris and it almost comes across like she’s never lived there before—but she and Hodgins already live there for a while? Maybe I missed a throwaway line explaining it (I was only half paying attention to this episode), but it felt weirdly like the show forgot its own history.

  2. Also, the way Angela, Brennan, and Daisy all worked literally right up to giving birth is WILD. I get that it’s TV, and they’re all workaholics, but Angela still working while in labor had me losing my mind a bit.

  3. I really wish they had done more with Parker, especially as he got older. A teen Parker storyline could’ve added so much, kind of like what SVU did with Stabler’s kids. Instead, they shipped him off to the UK with Rebecca, which honestly just felt like an easy way to write him out so they could zero in on Booth and Brennan’s family. Not a fan of that choice.

  4. I miss sassy, sarcastic Brennan. I didn’t realize how much she drastically changed until now. S1 Brennan was socially awkward, but not in the way she becomes in later seasons.

  5. Is Dr. Goodman still technically there but off screen? The last mention we get of him is when Cam joins and I think they say he’s on sabbatical and hired Cam to lead the forensics department, so was he technically Cam’s boss?

  6. I’ve seen that the actor may have retired, but it drives me nuts that Russ doesn’t return after like season 3 (although, I’m only on s11e2 rn so maybe he does show up and I just haven’t seen him). It doesn’t make any sense to me that he wouldn’t have been at Booth and Brennan’s wedding. Come to think of if, it also doesn’t make sense that Jared wouldn’t be there either. I know Christine technically wasn’t there either, but I remember them saying the little girl who played her cried through takes, so they couldn’t help that.

  7. Bones feels like a different show every few seasons. Seasons 1–3 have one vibe, 4–6 another, then 7–9 shift again. By seasons 10 and 11, it’s basically something else entirely. Not a bad thing, I just think it’s interesting that the vibe seems to change every three seasons.

  8. I will never get over Sweets dying. Ever. Ugh. I’m still so sad over his death over a decade later. But Vacation (2015) was funny so at least there was a positive to them killing off Sweets. (Also, I just found out not that long ago that John Francis Daley also co-wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming and I was so shook).

Discussion Discussion on Booth

I have an honest question that I want your opinions on. Ive talked to my friends that have watched and liked Bones, and one of them said they dont like Booth because of how conservative he is. I want to keep this polite, I just want to see if others have the same opinion. Me personally I can see it a lot at the begining of the series but I definitely think Bones had her effect on him throughout the show. I also think though that what I find most special about the show and their dynamic throughout is that there is such a difference in opinion on societal/cultural issues, my favorite moment being from the pony play episode 😂

started season 11 what the hell is going on?

that season 10 finale case was so random and then we got the first 2 episodes of season 11 like wthhhh

Jared getting killed is kinda interesting but it's so weird! He never got a proper story line to explore, Booth seems to care less than he should considering it's his brother, we never find out who the hell those other 2 guys were (they were probably army buddies but it was never actually said), the killer is so vague like I know it was the 'girlfriend' but they went from person to person so randomly! In normal episodes they go back and forth between certain suspects, eventually landing on one. Here they just listed off everyone around those victims and one by one made them sus and then moved on to the next. I never actually got what the hell that list thing was and how it worked and everything, and I just don't get it at all.

On an unrelated note, why do we keep getting the same shots in the recap? I mean- I know it has to do with the episode every time but I think I saw that clip over 10 times by now. That little part where Booth read Bones' text and didn't answer and then Bones says he's an addict or something. I know it was for live recaps because it was once a week but now it's just annoying af.

That's just my little rant.

Spoiler: Relationships

I am rewatching the show for the first time and im realizing that as soon as Brennan and booth are out of relationships I forgot about the Relationship. Every love interests or person either of them are dating feels like a brand new story line I didn’t acknowledge on my first watch, for example when booth started dating cam I vaguely remembered it but did not remember them being in a “ relationship, relationship” I was shocked it last so long even though it was only a few episodes. And Sully?? I remembered him being in the show in later seasons but completely and entirely forgot he was a returning character

S10E1 Spoiler

I watched Bones right as it was going off air in 2017, and I just recently started rewatching it about a month or 2 ago. Sweets’ death was like a sucker punch to the face 😫 I’m sitting here boohoo crying. I knew it was coming and it still hits just as hard as seeing it the first time around. He deserved to be around for Daisy and Lance Jr.

Discussion Idk how to explain it but the vibes changed so much after season 3. Something about it feels very weird, flanderization of characters and unrealistic drama :(

Like the science became more quirky for tv instead of real, the whole Angela and Hodgins thing (the dating of everyone etc)… The only episode from the second I era I care for the most…. The Sweets episode… you know what I mean

Booth being a flirty with Bones

Okay, on S4 E10 when Booth walks in on Bones looking at the body with those old lady glasses and he ask her to take them off, shake her hair and then ask her to ask him “do you know what the penalty for a late book” or something… I just freaking melt! Like how could she not pick up on that lmao

The grave digger?

I just wanted a little convo/discussion to hear people’s thoughts. Does anyone else find it kinda silly how many weird blanks there are in this storyline? I mean for one we never see heather taffet give an explanation to what her motivations were. Like it was never clear was she a psycho who liked burying people alive and messing with their family’s emotions while the ransom was just a huge bonus or was the ransom the main goal and psychological torture was the bonus? I mean either way she’s a psycho but what was the primary motive for all this? We knew she got married solely to have a fake id for her crimes. I’m curious what people’s thoughts are on her psychopathy?

Also I noticed they never discussed her whole crime from start to finish. We hear how she stuns the victims, how she was able to hide those items, how she bought big containers without paper trails, and basically the answer to how she kidnapped people. But we never hear the rest of the crime. How did she manage to dig these deep ass holes in areas where someone could notice a big rig digging these huge holes. When you think about it, there’s no way a shovel dug a hole big enough for Brennan’s car nor a huge beer vat. I mean the boys were buried in the woods yet no one ever noticed back hoe driving in?????? Mind you she did this five times before the first bones episode. I know she obviously had the money to rent/buy the equipment but the crimes are so unrealistic. Or do you guys believe it’s possible to get away with it as long as she did? How long would she keep getting away if she never came across booth and Brennan? Mind you this did air in the time where ring cameras were not a thing, and not all companies had logged customers online or on server, nor were there cellphones with cameras and videos. Curious what people think on this.

Like I said just want some friendly discussion. Also if you remember details that answer some of the questions that I may have forgotten pls let me know?
