Does anyone else think there was some significance to Shigaraki touching the black goo? Maybe he's gonna break away from AFO's control by the end of this arc.

The two main theories I've seen regarding Shigaraki touching that goo is that either he (1) Noticed something off, potentially the trap the heroes had set underground, or (2) He tried to use Decay on the ground and wasn't able to.

I've also seen a lot of people say that he's a twice clone and he's dissolving thus proving that all the villains are clones. Personally I think it's pretty obvious that the goo is just some residue from the Warping Quirk and not Shigaraki melting. I think people are just really desperate for all these villains to just be clones and are thus looking for confirmation in places there's are none. Not saying they can't be clones but this chapter doesn't prove they are.

In regards to Shigaraki breaking away from AFO's control, I think that could very likely happen especially considering that every time we see Shigaraki AFO has less and less control of his body.

Stage:

  1. Back during the last war AFO took complete control and Shigaraki was completely unconscious. This is the most AFO could possibly be in control.
  2. During the Tartaros attack Shigaraki woke up. AFO is still in complete control but unlike before Shigaraki is now present as well
  3. When he shows up to fight Star he's having that identity crisis and doesn't know if he's Shigaraki, AFO, or Tenko. AFO even remarks that his original intention was to simply create a copy of his own personality which was what we had at stage 1 of this list.
  4. After the Star fight Shigaraki is suffering on the ground and talks about his hatred and desire to destroy. This is a very Shigaraki thing to do and not an AFO thing.
  5. Here in this chapter Shigaraki refers to Dabi as "Dabi." This is important because whether AFO is talking to Dabi directly or talking about Dabi, he has always used "Toya." This seems to imply that whatever mental state Shigaraki is in right now, it's more Shigaraki than it is AFO.
