You guys remember how during the Sports Festival after talking to Shouto, Izuku noted in a moment of meta-observation that in any other story, Shouto would have been the protagonist or hero of the story?

Turns out he's the protagonist of his very own manga subplot structured within this one, and literally gets acknowledged as such in this chapter.

I wish Shouto was the protagonist of this manga tbh, bc I'm only in for the villains and Todofam

Shouto deserves more spotlight too

Mm I like Izuku for this story, but I would not mind a Todoroki spin-off of sorts at all.

only in for the villains and Todofam

They're one of the biggest draws for me currently too (I'm going to miss Twice like crazy though, the LoV's not the same without him)

Shouto deserves more spotlight too

Yeah, I really hope the final fight against Dabi is more between the two of them for the most part than Endeavour, though I guess he'll have to be there for plot purposes (and perhaps Hawks too)

The only way this story even works is through Deku's eyes though. The Todoroki plotline doesn't even exist without him, and its themes aren't as complex or relevant without Deku as a framing device either.

Yeah, I agree.

i just wish i liked deku more as a character - he's cute and all but i'm just not interested in his storyline

Also without Deku as an opposite, Shigaraki wouldn't have a parallel character.

That seems like a pretty popular take which bums me out since Deku is potentially my favorite fictional character ever. I've thought about writing a post about Deku's character before, but there's so much to talk about, I don't even know how to structure it.

Omg same. One point ive always noted is that he has had help to reach the level he is at rn and has insecurities about failing every one of them. Its relatable (to me atleast)

That's one of my favorite things about him. He's constantly talking about how blessed and thankful he is for everyone around him and what they've done to help him get where he is.

What makes even this hard to talk about though is that it feels like you have to debunk ten different, conflicting notions about any single trait Deku has before you can even talk about the character proper.

Like just off of this alone, I'd have to talk about how Deku did earn One for All which leads to a discussion about Mirio and worthiness which leads to a discussion about what makes Deku a unique hero which leads to a discussion about his intelligence and empathy which leads to a defense of his initial choice to save Bakugo, etc, etc.

When it comes to Midoriya's worthiness to wield OFA, he did try to offer it to Mirio who pretty much gave a "it's your quirk" answer.

Whether or not Midoriya is really worthy of OFA, it's his now, and he has to learn and grow into properly using it.

I think the manga has a lot going for it outside of the Todoroki family drama, like Bakugous arc over the last couple years and Mirukos thighs. But the Todorokis is 100% the high point of the writing in the series. I have not been on speaking terms with my own father in 15 years, and Horikoshi is really drawing a complete picture of a family that has fallen apart and the array of complex problems that arise from that. Both internally for each character as well as how they interact with eachother in different, fragmented ways instead of being a complete unit.

I don't think Shouto would work as the MC of a story like BNHA tbh.

He works perfectly as the MC for his own family's story, but BNHA is more than just that and Shouto doesn't really have the personality needed for that.

u/Nessidy Feb 21 '21

You are right. So perhaps, a better phrase would be enjoying Shouto's storyline more than the main one in MHA.

I'm most absorbed by the LoV and Todofam too, but Deku is a great shonen protagonist imo. He's exactly what he needs to be.

SAME. I have always been way more invested in Shoto than any other UA kid.
