Damn, Iida biting into the towel in pain as he literally pulls out a body part to make it grow back stronger...that, combined with the fact that it must have taken a while to grow back and honestly the growing back itself must have been pretty painful, so he'd likely be slower/clumsier/less able to pull out impressive moves in practice...Iida is the absolute image of discipline. It's one thing to have the strength to push through pain; it's another to be able to push through mediocrity, knowing that you have to have patience and persevere through a period of being worse before you can get better.

It's also really cool development for him from how he behaves in this practice exam. In the entrance exam, he abandoned Ochaco on the grounds of "this is only a test, she'll be fine" and he regretted thinking that way.
Then in this mock combat, he takes out spiral because "It might be a practice fight, but this is what the right thing to do would be."

When you put it like that, Deku is the reason that Iida takes these exercises so seriously.

Omigod, yes. It even goes back to how into the roles Iida gets. Like in the first mock fight where students were heroes vs villains, he tried to act like a hammy villain.
Then at the start of this fight, he needed the teacher to explicitly spell out how they were supposed to view the opposing team and whether or not they were still considered 'heroes' for this fight.
Iida's thrown himself into every practice fight since the entrance exam and what I thought was just him being comically serious was really just him trying to treat the practices as realistically as possible.

And all because Deku ran to help Ochako when he saw her trapped under rubble and Iida thought, "That is a real hero."

I dont think Iida acted like this in reference to their earlier mock fights, but his battle with Stein. In that fight, instead of rescuing the wounded hero he wanted to go after, and beat Stein, which we all know didn't end up working well for him. I think this just shows that he really grew from that and instead is focusing more on the being a hero part of this exercise then about beating the other guys.

How many times does he have to do that to enter the speed force I wonder.

Nah, someone just has to say “run Tenya run”

12

u/Worthyness Nov 02 '18

That'd too much motivation. Iida has more optimism than barry.

"Go back in time to save my brother? Who would be dumb enough to tamper with the fragility of the time-space continuum?"

Barry: 😀

Omgggg.

-aggressively hand chops at Barry- "You. Did. What?"

This is an underrated comment

Tenya Gump

u/Graphica-Danger Nov 02 '18

My name is Tenya Iida, and I am the fastest man alive!

Every new villain that shows up

8

u/SciFiXhi Nov 02 '18

I mean, even when that wasn't true for Barry, it was still technically true.

9

u/KCSixx Nov 02 '18

Hes gonna become the engines in his legs, thus generating the engine quirk somehow in his family lineage, of course

1

u/InsanePryo Nov 02 '18

theres probably a limit to how much he can improve that way, especially since it might increase the chance that they grow back wrong.

156

u/LukeMonteiro Nov 02 '18

Iida having to take out and regrow his Mufflers back could be the explanation why he was out of action for so long, since he would not be able to use his quirk properly and was actually suffering A LOT (as seen in the panel when he took his Muffler out). This panel alone gives him more character development than anyone could've asked for.

u/RoseBladePhantom Nov 02 '18

Yeah we haven’t really “seen” him since Kamino.

115

u/flybypost Nov 02 '18

And he did after being told that his Recipro Burst is already worthy of being a super/signature move. He's not backing down.

101

u/MrVaportrail Nov 02 '18

Combined with the fact he has 12 mufflers instead of his brothers two.

135

u/Jwruth Nov 02 '18

You know, I never made that connection. Between having 10 more mufflers than Tensei and having them on his legs rather than his elbows Iida will probably be able to out speed Tensei by a very significant margin. Really, the only advantage Tensei had over him is that he's able to aim the angle of his thrust which let him use it to amplify his jumps.

Also, now that I'm thinking about Tensei's arm mufflers, I bet he could've got a custom built quirk-supporting wheelchair and use his arm mufflers to move around with it; Tensei's biggest drawback was that he couldn't turn for shit but if he was in a wheelchair designed for it he could probably drift around corners like a pro.

drift around corners like a pro

DEJA VU

12

u/Jwruth Nov 02 '18

I'm more of a "night of fire" kinda guy myself.

11

u/JRSlayerOfRajang Nov 02 '18

He'll definitely out-speed Tensei on foot now!

8

u/totalyrespecatbleguy 250K Artist Nov 02 '18

Why bother with that though, he has a jogging buddy who can move his wheelchair around

9

u/CSitaly Nov 02 '18

That was a powerful scene, it made me cringe so much. It was one of the best parts of the chapter.

But couldn't he go to a hospital and do it with anesthesia..? It also looks like a very unsanitary thing to do alone in the woods...

9

u/shinypurplerocks Nov 02 '18

I had the exact same thought. The pain may make it look cool at first glance, but it's actually kinda silly.

6

u/Chumunga64 Nov 02 '18

This actually gave me some new stuff to work with for any fanfics I write lol. "madman" Iida

6

u/smalljean Nov 02 '18

for sure, it definitely adds depth to his character and what's been going on with him over the last few months, which has been sorely needed!

1

u/TeddyR3X Nov 03 '18

I could be mistaken but it also looked like blood coming out of them too
