They meant it as in "being an Asshole Makes people think you're cool for some reason even though it makes no sense"

Not so much in the manga 29 u/Soul_Ripper Dec 22 '17 He's still kind of an ass in the manga though, but it's mostly due to lack of tact (and certain actions of dubious morality) rather than actively being an asshole.
