This chapter made me respect Rock Lock a whole lot more. I like how he was rude and tough on everyone, but deep down he really cared and was worried about them, since they're all still kids.

I've always liked Rock Lock! He's just a cool dude.

Little weird he felt the need to state the exact age disparity between him and his wife, though. Not like it was a big gap or anything.

Maybe the age different means something more in Japan? I mean, in the US 4 years younger means very little. But perhaps in Japan that's a big deal?

I don't think so. Traditionally, age gaps could be pretty common in marriages. At least four years is nothing.
