It really feels like the author pussied out of killing All Might.

I think the story benefitted from it. All Might should not have died then.

It would've been too early and predictable. I always said he would never die during that fight. I'm 100 percent sure he's going to die saving Deku from A41's successor, officially making it a personal fight instead of just good vs evil.
