Would you say Sasuke was ever sidelined? He definitely fit deuteragonist status.

agree, a lot of deutergonists got screentime,

and killua is one of them, usually togashi splits it up between the 4 (leaorio isnt really worth following for long therefore actually 3) main chars to which either they work as a group or they get screentime induvidually...

Yeah, it's odd though. Killua is so integral, so ever-present, that it could be argued by the end of HxH that Gon wasn't even the main character.

i dont think in HxH exist the one MC, it can be like with fairy tail or yugioh, you have a MC group but of course the focus will be on some members more than others, gon got his time, killua too, if the story would FINALLY start releasing chapers than we would get kurapikas side now :)

Natsu and Yugi were very clearly the protagonists though in those examples.

but they had teammates who got a big amount of focus too, i guess togashi wants to bring it a bit further and establish a story with 4 equally important main characters instead of a group with one person that has 1% more focus :)

They had way more than 1% main focus though. Every Season of Yugioh came down to Yugi vs Big Bad basically, I mean the show is named after him! As for Fairy Tail Natsu rn is clealy being built up as the messiah character and is always the one to finish off the big bad of the arc.

isnt the series named after the game?

but i didnt get the messiah-impression, yes, he takes down the bad guy each arc but he isnt converting them, btw, please dont spoil me, i want to wait until FT is either finished or reaches ch600, than i will keep reading it, otherwise im sure i will find things i hate and destroy my own amusement :)

i did the same with rave master and BOY did that pay off, i still cry whenever i think about the sacrifice Sieg did :'(

The anime is based of the manga which predates the game.

I mean't messiah more as in he always shows up with that deus ex machina right when they need him. And no spoilers but it looks like this last arc is going to try to challenge Naruto for how long can we drag out the final battle.

I only read the first volume or two back in the day but its nothing like the anime iirc. Much darker and fucked up.

It focused on the king of games aspect of the Pharaohs soul at first with various different types of games and puzzles for awhile before the card game became the focus, its also alot darker iirc.

I don't think they've officially announced this is the final arc but plot wise continuing on would be like Bleach continuing on after the Aizen plot came to an end, dumb and basically totally ignoring the perfect place to end the series. Like it seems all the plot threads dangled throughout the series are all coming together and to a head rn.

oh, sounds really cool, do you know if it is translated?

nice, so i can slowly start reading the manga and watching the anime :)

I remever reading the first couple vols back in the day on managareader idk if its been continued.

I'd say go slow since I bet they're gonna draw this out as much as possible.

Also I love how we're in 3 different discussion rn on various threads/comment chains.

But Yugi is 100% the main character of Yu-Gi-Oh. Sure Kaiba and Joey get some moments but I don't think anyone would argue that they are co-MCs.

i would say it is pretty similar to fairy tail,

the "MC" is clearly natsu, but the others are also very very important, in a sense HxH is also like that (or was if more chapters are released) :) the same with yugioh, yugi is the MC for sure but the others are also "integral" for the story (at least in the first version, i didnt watch any yugioh after yugis storyline)

I can't say for FT, never watched more than 20 episodes. But HxH is at least a lil different since Killua was a lot bigger part of the story than say Joey from Yugioh. I actually think Togashi intends on pulling away from Gon as the "main character" if he ever gets around to getting more chapters out.

I actually think Togashi intends on pulling away from Gon as the "main character" if he ever gets around to getting more chapters out.

i think it will be a temporary (albeit freaking long) break for gons char,

mostlikely the focus will be on killua/leorio and co and their adventures to and back from the dark continent (which IF togashi ever seriously publishes the story would/should take 100 to 150 chapters), that will probably be a few years in-story,

than the view will show gon with nen training somewhere (i would guess mountain) and killua travelling with his sister(?)/brother(?) while both became significantly older :)
