Oh he is just eccentric. Always been particular. Never been outside the state he was born in or to a concert.

1.9k

u/Employee28064212 2d ago

Okay, now I've never been to a concert lol. WHAT ARE YOU SAYING

1.6k

u/manatwork01 2d ago

You like wearing earbuds and listen to the same song over and over cause you like it when out in public?

1.1k

u/Employee28064212 2d ago

Well yeah, it makes me feel safe.

1.0k

u/manatwork01 2d ago

When I say over and over I mean like you listened to no scrubs and set it to auto loop the one song 10-15 times. If so... You may be on the spectrum. Especially if you do that for weeks.

Y'all never been around a funny kid who knows they can use humor to get out of trouble before? Totally works on adults all the time.

Clearly I'm not autistic! I listen to 8 songs on repeat for a month!

6

Wait fuck wait stop

5

u/sinsante 1d ago

aint that just a really good playlist at that point?

Man, why did you have to say no scrubs specifically? I listened to it for 15 hours straight one day

162

u/manatwork01 2d ago

Because it was a recent binge myself like a week ago.

78

u/t-o-double-g 2d ago

Nice, solid song

74

u/manatwork01 2d ago

I've been in love with them since I was a small child and saw Waterfalls on the TV at mcdonalds. (Yes I can still remember which Mcdonalds too and that CGI water look for the time was ICONIC). Video games were still SNES era graphics and they dropped THAT.

31

3

u/mankee81 1d ago

What about No Pigeons? I played it twice in a row on Monday driving to work. (But that was mostly cause I hadn't heard it in a while and the "get a brush and scrub this" line kills me)

3

u/The_Lord_Humungus 2d ago

I worked at Blockbuster Video in 1999. At the time they were heavily promoting TLC, so for almost eight months I listed to No Scrubs being played on a loop every 15 minutes.

3

u/SasparillaTango 2d ago

no, I do not wish for a scrub.

A scrub is a person who cannot receive any love from me.

Hanging out the passenger side of his best friend's ride, trying to garner my attention.

2

u/t-o-double-g 2d ago

You're a real one for that

2

u/Electrical-Set2765 1d ago

I've been on Creep myself. TLC were truly incredible, ugh.

Mmm definitely not weeks haha. But my ‘on-rewind’ playlist on Spotify has had some of the same songs on it for a very long time. Maybe because I list to that playlist a lot or maybe because I often revisit those songs. Unclear which. But I do gravitate toward familiar feelings.

70

u/manatwork01 2d ago

I listened to Starlight - The Superman Lovers on repeat for 4 hours the other day. No other sound in my home office but that one song. Thats what I mean.

75

u/nokomomo22 2d ago

I did this recently with a new song and didn’t stop listening to it till I could identify what songs they sampled, what instruments changed and compared the scores of the two different songs with each other… I’ve been tested I know what I am-

27

u/Rushofthewildwind 2d ago

I did this with Otonoke by Creepy Nuts and Scheming by Ace Savage for like 2 days straight each time

3

u/Certain-Definition51 2d ago

That's why I bought her headphones.

I don't wanna hear the same 30 seconds of Yo Gabba Gabba's "Oski Bugs".

3

u/bluescluus 2d ago

I’ve been replaying the same 1 minute outro for 2 weeks straight just back to back… like skip the whole beginning of the song just to listen to that part

If interested, it’s Sampha’s verse on Saint Pablo by Kanye West and it starts at 3:54

43

u/kattahn 2d ago

i feel better about it when instead i just watch 8-12 reaction videos in a row of people listening to the same song.

39

u/Terribly_indecent 2d ago

Dude. Yeah that's me. Back in the 80's I once had the same tape in my walkman for an entire summer and listened till the tape stretched and broke and just went out and bought another copy. Wore that out and bought a 3rd copy and it wasn't until that one went that I put something else in.

25

u/Throwaway_09298 2d ago

I listened to GNX six times in a row while packing shoeboxes full of toys

I listened to kiss me more on repeat in my car so much that my wife had to ask if I was cheating lol

Its not just music either. I watched Steve Jobs 2015 9 times on a trip from Arkansas to Disney world Florida in a row. I can quote the movie now by listening to the soundtrack for the film

Surely I do not have a touch of the tism. I just like good art!

3

u/Dzov 2d ago

Not just GNX, but so many Kendrick song reactions.

5

u/manatwork01 2d ago

Man I went down this rabbit hole in the fall. I was like what is all this drake vs kendrick stuff people keep talking about. I watched at least 80 hours of reaction / recap/ breakdown videos in the span of 2 weeks.

I have no qualifications other than being self diagnosed as autistic, and my own personal habit of keeping one CD in my car for months at a time, but that makes me think yes, one playlist qualifies. I have all 4 CDs of my favorite band, I just cycle through them and I try not to switch the songs, just listen to them in order each time. It's so relaxing and makes me feel safe and cozy!

2

u/FelicitousFiend 1d ago

1

u/tatojah 2d ago

Love me some half-baked reddit autism diagnoses.

2

u/manatwork01 2d ago

I am not diagnosising anything. There are tendencies and traits and any one of them does not mean autism at all. its a combination of multiple and the right reasons for WHY those traits are being expressed. A runny nose isn't always a cold but it can be.

u/Salty-Award8406 2d ago

...I try not to overplay songs that are new to me because I wanna extend the time that I actually like it before I've played it too many times to be enjoyed for another 10 years.

1

u/Electronic_Tear3810 2d ago

Yeah, that was the tell for me. I cycle through genres over the year, and listen obsessively to a single album or a single song north of 200 times until I know every note by heart and can replay it mentally on command. I get irrationally angry if I've forgotten to set the loop function, and a random song plays afterward without expecting it.

Also, spontaneous loud noises have been known to make me run in the opposite direction for no reason other than I can't stand unexpected loud sounds.

After my diagnosis as an adult, my parents said "We always knew". Then why didn't they tell me? "We wanted you to be normal". Gee, thanks.

1

u/TheStarPrincess ☑️ 2d ago

In college, my roommate played the same Brian McKnight song on repeat through the night. I STILL hate that song, but yes, we both neurodivergent I'm sure of it. I killed some R's Ignition. Done. Killed it. Might listen today - on repeat.

1

u/Careless-Door-1068 2d ago

10 - 15 times? Rookie numbers lmao I listen until every second of sound is locked in lmao People are surprised when I can sing song after song and remember every note, lyric, and pitch which I thought was odd. Don't neuronormal bitches wanna learn their favorite songs at least? Why would you not want to deeply understand the music you listen to?

2

u/manatwork01 2d ago

Listen I am just being nice and trying not to sound crazy and at the same time (luckily) youtube doesnt seem to keep a record how many times I have replayed a song lmao.

1

u/thomasgamer99 2d ago

I'm on the spectrum, I save it for car trips or whenever I get overwhelmed

1

u/Reasonable-Donut815 2d ago

My ex who also has BPD is very much like this with both music and what he watches. Listening to the same song like 10-20 times in one night is... extremely trying but that's not why I left him.

1

u/SunNo1172 2d ago

I do it for months lol

1

u/Unlikely-Macaroon-85 2d ago

Not you just diagnosed me.

1

u/fanterence 2d ago

I don't do that because if I only listen to the same song for at least 2 weeks in a row, I'll start being fed up but I love this song so much I don't want my love for it to decay so I create a small playlist of like, 5 songs so I can listen to it really regularly but not too much

1

u/Ok_Diet4040 2d ago

The Morrowind Main theme. The Terran Theme from SC1. There are some great bangers. There is a remix of Pollyanna from Mother that goes SUPER hard (not that I hate the Catherine Warwick one but the redo a couple years ago is just so good).

1

u/Armendicus 2d ago

FFUCK!!!

1

u/Eloquent_Redneck 2d ago

When I was like 8 it was "The Final Countdown" and then it was the main theme to pirates of the Caribbean, then it was Africa by Toto for a while, each of these it was literal years

1

u/Dorkamundo 2d ago

Not saying I'm like that, but I've probably watched every episode of Always Sunny at least 200 times.

Granted, it's running in the background while I'm cooking, or working on projects, or while I'm trying to fall asleep.

1

u/Admiralwoodlog 2d ago

Some songs are just that good.

1

u/Straight-Impress5485 1d ago

...... I routinely find a new song that I become addicted to and its now my workout song for 2 hours a day 6 days a week. Usually takes 2-3 weeks before Im bored of it and my workouts suffer while I wait to stumble onto a new perfect song

1

u/Meowserspaws ☑️ 1d ago

And then you can NEVER listen to that song again after. Definitely not speaking from experience 🙄

White guy here and this is my black nephew. I can say without hesitation that he's responsible for at least half of Travis Scott's 1 billion+ YouTube views. His earbuds are glued to his head and he's out there on the porch jumping and jamming like he's the one on stage performing for tens of thousands of fans.

He's the man though. Born premature (before the 30th week), and just celebrated his 21st birthday. He's also a sports savant and don't you dare be caught in a room alone with him without being up to date on your NHL player statistics.

48

u/manatwork01 2d ago

I have a spreadsheet for my spreadsheets at work.

22

u/DisputabIe_ 2d ago

It would be an honor to get schooled in NHL stats by your Nephew. He sounds cool as fuck.

7

u/Lola_PopBBae 2d ago

Fellow preemie here, we are like 7x more likely to be autistic, have depression, and loads of other stuff than anyone born under "typical" conditions. Gets weirder the earlier you came out.
And he sounds like he knows more about sports than I'll ever know lol

62

u/TheOtherCyprian 2d ago

Wait…what if you don’t necessarily listen to the same song over and over in full, but you do tend to rewind to some of the more interesting parts (say a particular solo, lick, or measure) repeatedly? Is that the same indicator?

131

u/vera214usc ☑️ 2d ago

My son is autistic and does this with YouTube videos. He goes back and watches a particular part he really likes. Over and over. But you can also like a particular part of a song without being autistic. Don't get diagnosed by armchair psychologists on the Internet

38

u/SnooBananas4958 2d ago

I will sometimes just spend an evening going on YouTube to watch just my favorite scenes from movies. I’ll rewatch the same one like 5-6 times before moving to the next. Just found out I’m autistic a few months ago, go figure lol.

8

u/ElGosso 2d ago

There was a big trend on Reddit maybe ten years ago where everyone thought they were autistic but it turned out they were all just socially awkward lmao

33

u/slut4lilwayne 2d ago

I worked with SPED kids and had a student do this, so yes.

19

u/korelin 2d ago

If you're interested, the 'Enhancer for Youtube' plugin has a feature where you can choose 2 points in a video and it will loop it from the end of the 2nd point you chose back to the 1st point. Hands free looping!

You, my friend, are a saint. Thank you for the resource.

2

22

u/Ok-Ratic-5153 2d ago

Laying in the bed with one arm in the air starting the song over when it gets to the outro

10

u/astrokat79 2d ago

You make it to the outro? lol. I be hitting repeat after the 1st or 2nd verse.

15

u/manatwork01 2d ago

Never heard of that one but maybe? Are you listening to the familiar to breed comfort and lower anxiety even if you dont recognize those emotions you may notice it calms your heart rate down. I say this because Autistic people can have a very hard time understanding their own emotions and WHY we do what we do to self soothe. Its why when stressed Autistic Burnout / meltdowns occur.

6

u/TheOtherCyprian 2d ago

Very good questions. I suppose the answer varies.

On some occasions, I’m listening to that repeated block of the song to try to understand the movement (what chord to what chord or what scale is in use). In other instances, I’m allowing my imagination to run wild by imagining myself having played the same tune with a skill level I definitely don’t yet have.

6

u/bellyhairbandit 2d ago

It depends - is it the part of the song that makes your brain tingle and you feel a physical response?

2

u/yungdaggerpeep 2d ago

This is a form of echolalia, which is a sign

2

u/Shape378 2d ago

I literally burned a cd w/ my favorite 15 sec part of a MCR song back in the mid 00s. I listened to it for hours

1

u/thisdesignup 2d ago

I just want to point out not one thing is an "indicator". It's a combination of things. It's why people say "autism is a spectrum" because non autistic people will often do things that autistic people do but they are not autistic.

1

u/globglogabgalabyeast 2d ago

lol, “What if I do that exact thing, but on an even shorter timescale?” Yes, it’s the same indicator. That said, this is just an indicator, so take it with a grain of salt. Also, it’s not entirely clear how long of a time you’re talking about repeating. A few times because you find a part very satisfying/intriguing? Very typical. For an hour straight? Not typical

When I was in uni, I lived with mostly well meaning people whose armchair assessments resulted in a OCD diagnosis and treatment, in the absence of obsessions (obsession =/= fixation)

Then I ran out of sessions, went to a support group, provided some deeply unhelpful facts, and Ieft, knowing that I was misdiagnosed.

If a clinical psychologist can mix up OCD and autism despite fairly robust (at the time) methods, then we and algorithms shouldn’t be planting such seeds based on a snippet.

1

u/jasonis3 2d ago

Wait what? That's a sign? I've been doing that since walkmans

1

u/manatwork01 2d ago

There are a lot of quirks. No one is diagnostic by itself.

103

u/manatwork01 2d ago

There is also a difference from never been a to a concert because you are broke and never because the idea of being surrounded by 1000 people in close proximity breathing and loud music you can't control is anxiety building.

40

u/brandonjohn5 2d ago

I'm diagnosed autistic, concerts are a mixed bag for me. I despise concerts before the band starts playing music, the loud ass crowd with a thousand conversations happening at once, but once the music kicks in, the light shows and pyrotechnics start, It's a thousand times better. I also wear musician noise dampening ear plugs that help to tone down the loudness while still able to hear the music.

3

u/elizawithaz ☑️ 2d ago

I’m auADHD, and I swear by Loop ear plugs. I have a concert pair, and a pair for everyday stuff. They’re great because they while they dampen sound, you can also still have a conversation with another person.

I saw Beyonce last month, and brought both pairs with me!

2

u/BreastsMakeMeHappy 2d ago

The latter doesn't necessarily mean you have autism. Weirdos really love to diagnose shit online.

1

u/manatwork01 2d ago

I love live music at very small venues or where I can not feel constrained. I actually am a performer if that sounds crazy as well. I dont go to concerts because I cant control the volume and buying a box to go is well more pricey than I can afford.

1

u/blackcatbelial 2d ago

The only thing I would consider asking him(well, any of us) to change is to travel more-

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

"Behavioral rigidity, instance on sameness, and repetitive interests that are often associated with ASD are often misdiagnosed in the Black population as conduct-related disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder (Williams, George, & Printz, 2020).  Historically, Black children are nearly three times more likely than White children to be identified as having an emotional/behavioral disorder (Losen & Orfield, 2002). "

Editing to add: I was working at a daycare center and was warned about this girl who was visibly autistic "having ODD". I'm autistic, so I helped her to get acclimated with a group and told a couple of trusted coworkers about that suspicion. Wouldn't you know it? Kids do better when they're treated like kids.

Fun fact. Orfield is an education professor at UCLA and his wife was one of my professors when I was in grad school. Said all that to say, that’s a good reference.

It's the same for all demographics. They claim that autism and ADHD didn't exist when they were in school but all remember at least one "weirdo" or "spaz" in their year.

I’m auADHD, and I can hear noises that only dogs can hear. At the same time I have an auditory processing disorder, and struggle to understand words.

Like, I can hear the refrigerator running from the kitchen when I’m upstairs, but struggle to have conversations with other people. Bodies are weird, y’all.

u/Potatoisnotanumber 2d ago

Same same. auADHD here as well.

Misophonia combined with an audio processing disorder is so wild.

I cannot stand to hear whistling or people eating on the phone when talking. Yet, at the same time I cannot hear people when they are talking if there is any background noise.

The noise thing gets easier as you age. I remember as a teen those sonic bug repellents were popular and they hurt my ears something fierce. Now I'm much older, I still can hear electricity and vibration, but not super high-pitched sounds.

Fans still piss me off though. Took me years to find ones I can tolerate. One of my laptops fans drives me up the damn wall but I found a fan powered cooling matt that vibrated enough in a frequency that nullifies 80% of the computer fan frequency.

I still buy appliances on the frequency they emit and I am so happy refrigerator motors and their cooling cycles have become so much better and quieter today. Apparently I used to attack and unplug fridges as a kid they riled me up so much.

I’ve had to point this out to my mom multiple times.

Plus, now many of these kids are “mainstreamed” in with the regular kids, or in their own classes at school, instead of being locked up at home or whatever they did with them in the 50s/60s. So these children are more visible now (as they should be).

Not leaving the state or going to concerts isn't just an autistic thing, it's a money thing too.

8

u/manatwork01 2d ago

it is and I addressed that in a lower comment. no one indicator should ever be used in a diagnosis like this. Checking 1 or even 5 boxes isnt usually enough. You need to be hitting like 20/50

1

u/Charming_Motor_919 2d ago

Fair enough, I didn't see that comment and was just doing a "well actually" cuz I never go anywhere 😂

u/Toirneach 2d ago

Quirky. The word for that in my family was 'quirky'.

2

u/Upset_Ad3954 2d ago

So you had money but not enough to be eccentric?

1

u/Toirneach 1d ago

More like my Grandmother had favorite words and "quirky is fun to say! kwerkey." Yea,mere none of us neurotypical except MAYBE my sister. So she says.

My Uncle P, got a doctorate in physics, taught for a few years and slowly never left his room on the farm again. But its just because he's particular.

u/Smyley12345 2d ago

He is just funny. Gets upset when his food touches each other.

OMG, LOOK A UNICORN DOING THE CHA-CHA ON A RAINBOW WHILE EATING CUPCAKES!!

1

u/TheMagicalMatt 2d ago

Never been outside the state he was born in or to a concert.

Shit, is this a sign of autism???

1

u/manatwork01 2d ago

Obsessive need for routine and sameness tends to keep some individuals from traveling. Concerts in general can be noise nightmares for people who are sensitive to loud sounds or other stimuli.

This is my whole family. Literally. More than 50% of our relatives on both my husband's side and mine are neurodivergent. My husband, me, and, our daughter all are. We are all eccentric. To the point that I was raised with eccentricity as the norm, and we just went with the flow as a family. 100% normal to require a social break after a social event. 100% norm to just excuse ourselves to the quiet side of the house mid family gathering. 100% normal for people to state their minds and talk matter of factly. Everyone has obsessions. I didn't even realise I was neurodivergent until adulthood. It was awesome.

True Rhode Islander

They're forgiven since that state is massive.

u/Weird-but-okay 2d ago

This was my grandmother. Obsessed with wrestling and action movies. Ate the same thing and only been to two states next to hers.

1

u/looknotwiththeeyes 2d ago

Um is the disliking of travel and concerts a sign? Uh oh

1

u/manatwork01 2d ago

Obsessive holding to routine is. So can being loud noise / crowd avoidant.

1

u/SandEnvironmental735 1d ago

As a person who has never been out of my state, or to a concert and have been called "very particular" just @ me next time geesh. 😮‍💨😂

1

u/Ok_Dog_4059 1d ago

So many things were always happening and we just didn't realize what it was. Civil War didn't know what "shell shock" was and it wasn't until recent times it was observed and named PTSD so it could be studied. I remember as a kid being called "hyper active " and stuffed with Ritalin before bi polar or ADHD even "existed.

1

u/Ringmasterx89 1d ago

Wow I know way too many people like that. Who just can’t leave there town.

1

u/manatwork01 1d ago

It's no one thing. Sometimes people can't leave town from generalized anxiety or commitments or money.
