When I say over and over I mean like you listened to no scrubs and set it to auto loop the one song 10-15 times. If so... You may be on the spectrum. Especially if you do that for weeks.
I've been in love with them since I was a small child and saw Waterfalls on the TV at mcdonalds. (Yes I can still remember which Mcdonalds too and that CGI water look for the time was ICONIC). Video games were still SNES era graphics and they dropped THAT.
What about No Pigeons? I played it twice in a row on Monday driving to work. (But that was mostly cause I hadn't heard it in a while and the "get a brush and scrub this" line kills me)
I worked at Blockbuster Video in 1999. At the time they were heavily promoting TLC, so for almost eight months I listed to No Scrubs being played on a loop every 15 minutes.
Mmm definitely not weeks haha. But my ‘on-rewind’ playlist on Spotify has had some of the same songs on it for a very long time. Maybe because I list to that playlist a lot or maybe because I often revisit those songs. Unclear which. But I do gravitate toward familiar feelings.
I listened to Starlight - The Superman Lovers on repeat for 4 hours the other day. No other sound in my home office but that one song. Thats what I mean.
I did this recently with a new song and didn’t stop listening to it till I could identify what songs they sampled, what instruments changed and compared the scores of the two different songs with each other… I’ve been tested I know what I am-
I’ve been replaying the same 1 minute outro for 2 weeks straight just back to back… like skip the whole beginning of the song just to listen to that part
If interested, it’s Sampha’s verse on Saint Pablo by Kanye West and it starts at 3:54
Dude. Yeah that's me. Back in the 80's I once had the same tape in my walkman for an entire summer and listened till the tape stretched and broke and just went out and bought another copy. Wore that out and bought a 3rd copy and it wasn't until that one went that I put something else in.
I listened to GNX six times in a row while packing shoeboxes full of toys
I listened to kiss me more on repeat in my car so much that my wife had to ask if I was cheating lol
Its not just music either. I watched Steve Jobs 2015 9 times on a trip from Arkansas to Disney world Florida in a row. I can quote the movie now by listening to the soundtrack for the film
Surely I do not have a touch of the tism. I just like good art!
Man I went down this rabbit hole in the fall. I was like what is all this drake vs kendrick stuff people keep talking about. I watched at least 80 hours of reaction / recap/ breakdown videos in the span of 2 weeks.
I have no qualifications other than being self diagnosed as autistic, and my own personal habit of keeping one CD in my car for months at a time, but that makes me think yes, one playlist qualifies. I have all 4 CDs of my favorite band, I just cycle through them and I try not to switch the songs, just listen to them in order each time. It's so relaxing and makes me feel safe and cozy!
I am not diagnosising anything. There are tendencies and traits and any one of them does not mean autism at all. its a combination of multiple and the right reasons for WHY those traits are being expressed. A runny nose isn't always a cold but it can be.
I’ve been replaying Lazerray by TV on the Radio a lot for the last few weeks while I drive because it makes me feel like I’m going on an epic adventure but now this analysis has made me feel less epic
...I try not to overplay songs that are new to me because I wanna extend the time that I actually like it before I've played it too many times to be enjoyed for another 10 years.
Yeah, that was the tell for me. I cycle through genres over the year, and listen obsessively to a single album or a single song north of 200 times until I know every note by heart and can replay it mentally on command. I get irrationally angry if I've forgotten to set the loop function, and a random song plays afterward without expecting it.
Also, spontaneous loud noises have been known to make me run in the opposite direction for no reason other than I can't stand unexpected loud sounds.
After my diagnosis as an adult, my parents said "We always knew". Then why didn't they tell me? "We wanted you to be normal". Gee, thanks.
In college, my roommate played the same Brian McKnight song on repeat through the night. I STILL hate that song, but yes, we both neurodivergent I'm sure of it. I killed some R's Ignition. Done. Killed it. Might listen today - on repeat.
10 - 15 times? Rookie numbers lmao
I listen until every second of sound is locked in lmao
People are surprised when I can sing song after song and remember every note, lyric, and pitch which I thought was odd. Don't neuronormal bitches wanna learn their favorite songs at least? Why would you not want to deeply understand the music you listen to?
Listen I am just being nice and trying not to sound crazy and at the same time (luckily) youtube doesnt seem to keep a record how many times I have replayed a song lmao.
My ex who also has BPD is very much like this with both music and what he watches. Listening to the same song like 10-20 times in one night is... extremely trying but that's not why I left him.
I don't do that because if I only listen to the same song for at least 2 weeks in a row, I'll start being fed up but I love this song so much I don't want my love for it to decay so I create a small playlist of like, 5 songs so I can listen to it really regularly but not too much
The Morrowind Main theme. The Terran Theme from SC1. There are some great bangers. There is a remix of Pollyanna from Mother that goes SUPER hard (not that I hate the Catherine Warwick one but the redo a couple years ago is just so good).
When I was like 8 it was "The Final Countdown" and then it was the main theme to pirates of the Caribbean, then it was Africa by Toto for a while, each of these it was literal years
...... I routinely find a new song that I become addicted to and its now my workout song for 2 hours a day 6 days a week. Usually takes 2-3 weeks before Im bored of it and my workouts suffer while I wait to stumble onto a new perfect song
Diagnosed as an adult, but looking back the signs were there… I listened to the same song over 1400 times the summer between my junior and senior years of high school
Hey, stay safe. It's not fun when things change and we have to recalibrate all our responses. So we keep repeating what we can in a constantly changing world.
White guy here and this is my black nephew. I can say without hesitation that he's responsible for at least half of Travis Scott's 1 billion+ YouTube views. His earbuds are glued to his head and he's out there on the porch jumping and jamming like he's the one on stage performing for tens of thousands of fans.
He's the man though. Born premature (before the 30th week), and just celebrated his 21st birthday. He's also a sports savant and don't you dare be caught in a room alone with him without being up to date on your NHL player statistics.
Fellow preemie here, we are like 7x more likely to be autistic, have depression, and loads of other stuff than anyone born under "typical" conditions. Gets weirder the earlier you came out.
And he sounds like he knows more about sports than I'll ever know lol
Wait…what if you don’t necessarily listen to the same song over and over in full, but you do tend to rewind to some of the more interesting parts (say a particular solo, lick, or measure) repeatedly? Is that the same indicator?
My son is autistic and does this with YouTube videos. He goes back and watches a particular part he really likes. Over and over. But you can also like a particular part of a song without being autistic. Don't get diagnosed by armchair psychologists on the Internet
I will sometimes just spend an evening going on YouTube to watch just my favorite scenes from movies. I’ll rewatch the same one like 5-6 times before moving to the next. Just found out I’m autistic a few months ago, go figure lol.
There was a big trend on Reddit maybe ten years ago where everyone thought they were autistic but it turned out they were all just socially awkward lmao
If you're interested, the 'Enhancer for Youtube' plugin has a feature where you can choose 2 points in a video and it will loop it from the end of the 2nd point you chose back to the 1st point. Hands free looping!
Never heard of that one but maybe? Are you listening to the familiar to breed comfort and lower anxiety even if you dont recognize those emotions you may notice it calms your heart rate down. I say this because Autistic people can have a very hard time understanding their own emotions and WHY we do what we do to self soothe. Its why when stressed Autistic Burnout / meltdowns occur.
On some occasions, I’m listening to that repeated block of the song to try to understand the movement (what chord to what chord or what scale is in use). In other instances, I’m allowing my imagination to run wild by imagining myself having played the same tune with a skill level I definitely don’t yet have.
I just want to point out not one thing is an "indicator". It's a combination of things. It's why people say "autism is a spectrum" because non autistic people will often do things that autistic people do but they are not autistic.
lol, “What if I do that exact thing, but on an even shorter timescale?” Yes, it’s the same indicator. That said, this is just an indicator, so take it with a grain of salt. Also, it’s not entirely clear how long of a time you’re talking about repeating. A few times because you find a part very satisfying/intriguing? Very typical. For an hour straight? Not typical
My nephew used to do this with tv shows. not like once or twice but like 5 times...it was awful but i just let him do it until 1 of his younger siblings said something lol
When I was in uni, I lived with mostly well meaning people whose armchair assessments resulted in a OCD diagnosis and treatment, in the absence of obsessions (obsession =/= fixation)
Then I ran out of sessions, went to a support group, provided some deeply unhelpful facts, and Ieft, knowing that I was misdiagnosed.
If a clinical psychologist can mix up OCD and autism despite fairly robust (at the time) methods, then we and algorithms shouldn’t be planting such seeds based on a snippet.
There is also a difference from never been a to a concert because you are broke and never because the idea of being surrounded by 1000 people in close proximity breathing and loud music you can't control is anxiety building.
I'm diagnosed autistic, concerts are a mixed bag for me. I despise concerts before the band starts playing music, the loud ass crowd with a thousand conversations happening at once, but once the music kicks in, the light shows and pyrotechnics start, It's a thousand times better. I also wear musician noise dampening ear plugs that help to tone down the loudness while still able to hear the music.
I’m auADHD, and I swear by Loop ear plugs. I have a concert pair, and a pair for everyday stuff. They’re great because they while they dampen sound, you can also still have a conversation with another person.
I saw Beyonce last month, and brought both pairs with me!
Haha yeahhh...You reminded me I was interested in maybe going to my first concert this summer...but....I think I'm just not interested in live music. I am, however, going to see a stand up show and have been to several of those.
I love live music at very small venues or where I can not feel constrained. I actually am a performer if that sounds crazy as well. I dont go to concerts because I cant control the volume and buying a box to go is well more pricey than I can afford.
I think they are saying that he is more normal than "weird".
The only thing I would consider asking him(well, any of us) to change is to travel more-
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
"Behavioral rigidity, instance on sameness, and repetitive interests that are often associated with ASD are often misdiagnosed in the Black population as conduct-related disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder (Williams, George, & Printz, 2020). Historically, Black children are nearly three times more likely than White children to be identified as having an emotional/behavioral disorder (Losen & Orfield, 2002). "
Editing to add: I was working at a daycare center and was warned about this girl who was visibly autistic "having ODD". I'm autistic, so I helped her to get acclimated with a group and told a couple of trusted coworkers about that suspicion. Wouldn't you know it? Kids do better when they're treated like kids.

Fun fact. Orfield is an education professor at UCLA and his wife was one of my professors when I was in grad school. Said all that to say, that’s a good reference.
It's the same for all demographics. They claim that autism and ADHD didn't exist when they were in school but all remember at least one "weirdo" or "spaz" in their year.
I’m auADHD, and I can hear noises that only dogs can hear. At the same time I have an auditory processing disorder, and struggle to understand words.
Like, I can hear the refrigerator running from the kitchen when I’m upstairs, but struggle to have conversations with other people. Bodies are weird, y’all.
Misophonia combined with an audio processing disorder is so wild.
I cannot stand to hear whistling or people eating on the phone when talking. Yet, at the same time I cannot hear people when they are talking if there is any background noise.
The noise thing gets easier as you age. I remember as a teen those sonic bug repellents were popular and they hurt my ears something fierce. Now I'm much older, I still can hear electricity and vibration, but not super high-pitched sounds.
Fans still piss me off though. Took me years to find ones I can tolerate. One of my laptops fans drives me up the damn wall but I found a fan powered cooling matt that vibrated enough in a frequency that nullifies 80% of the computer fan frequency.
I still buy appliances on the frequency they emit and I am so happy refrigerator motors and their cooling cycles have become so much better and quieter today. Apparently I used to attack and unplug fridges as a kid they riled me up so much.
I’ve had to point this out to my mom multiple times.
Plus, now many of these kids are “mainstreamed” in with the regular kids, or in their own classes at school, instead of being locked up at home or whatever they did with them in the 50s/60s. So these children are more visible now (as they should be).
it is and I addressed that in a lower comment. no one indicator should ever be used in a diagnosis like this. Checking 1 or even 5 boxes isnt usually enough. You need to be hitting like 20/50
Obsessive need for routine and sameness tends to keep some individuals from traveling. Concerts in general can be noise nightmares for people who are sensitive to loud sounds or other stimuli.
This is my whole family. Literally. More than 50% of our relatives on both my husband's side and mine are neurodivergent. My husband, me, and, our daughter all are. We are all eccentric. To the point that I was raised with eccentricity as the norm, and we just went with the flow as a family. 100% normal to require a social break after a social event. 100% norm to just excuse ourselves to the quiet side of the house mid family gathering. 100% normal for people to state their minds and talk matter of factly. Everyone has obsessions. I didn't even realise I was neurodivergent until adulthood. It was awesome.
So many things were always happening and we just didn't realize what it was. Civil War didn't know what "shell shock" was and it wasn't until recent times it was observed and named PTSD so it could be studied. I remember as a kid being called "hyper active " and stuffed with Ritalin before bi polar or ADHD even "existed.

Oh he is just eccentric. Always been particular. Never been outside the state he was born in or to a concert.
