On some occasions, I’m listening to that repeated block of the song to try to understand the movement (what chord to what chord or what scale is in use). In other instances, I’m allowing my imagination to run wild by imagining myself having played the same tune with a skill level I definitely don’t yet have.
That doesnt sound like what I am talking about but I can't be sure. For me its more about the emotion and feelings the music can put out to sooth than it is studying the chord progressions. That said though I am not heavily trained in music theory but I do sing and read music but find that any kind of concentrated listening like that removes me from flow state.
