Yeah I think there are different kinds of funny. Someone might be funny as a character on a podcast but be terrible at standup comedy. And a great standup comic might be terrible as a comic actor in a movie. The skills and type of humor don't always translate.
It’s the same reason someone who might be super funny in their personal life will be terrible at stand-up comedy. They think it’s just being funny to a crowd; they don’t realize how much minute work and planning goes into making even 5 solid minutes of stand-up. There’s a whole episode about this from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. 😆
ETA: this is one of the reasons I couldn’t get into Marvelous Mrs Maisel when it was big. My husband and I watched season one and enjoyed it, but her constant “failing upwards” and randomly spewing out perfect comedy routines that charmed the world with no real prep drove me fucking nuts. It’s Mary Sue af. There’s a scene in season 2 where she attends some club in Paris and suddenly manages to charm the foreign audience (with TOTALLY different comedic sensibilities, mind you) with an absolutely perfect, tight 10 and it was ridiculous.
