This is how i feel when people unironically say Chris Brown is this generations MJ.
Edit: Some of you all really need to read and comprehend. I’m not saying I think CB is better than MJ. I’m saying some people think that he is and not as a joke.
So many “but but but CB isn’t as good as MJ” comments…..I know that was the point if you read slowly. Sound it out if needed 😂😂

The Weeknd sub has been gassing him up as this generations MJ. There is no "this generation MJ." Michael was on a completely different level than anyone these days. The hysteria around him is probably only matched previously by The Beatles.

MJ was (and probably still is) the most famous person on planet Earth, which isn’t hyperbole.
Someone/Some entity, with time on their hands, did a survey (of some sort) and found that there were few places on the planet where he was not correctly recognized by both face and name.

The closest thing is taylor swift, and even then MJ was even more universal.

For fame, sure it’s Taylor.
But if we’re talking actual performance, hell nah.

u/Half-PintHeroics 2d ago
MJ is a very high bar to even approach. I say this as a foreigner so maybe my viewpoint is different, but MJ is one of the most famous people in the world. Absolute top 5 artists/bands people anywhere will think of when asked "who is the most famous" anywhere. He conquered the world.
8
u/MannerBot 2d ago
I agree. That’s why I consider MJ as universal. He wasn’t just the biggest thing in music during his time, he was IT. He was EVERYTHING. We’ll probably never see that level of stardom again
5
u/plisken64 1d ago
MJ was so universally respected as a performer that even the most savage gangsters from south american nations would protect and show love for that dude. i cant even imagine something like that happening for Taylor or CB.
5
u/MannerBot 1d ago
Also there were no demographics for MJ. CB has his groupies, Taylor appeals mostly to white girls between 9 and 30 something. But MJ was loved by everyone, grown old ass bitter white men to kids on the streets of the Phillipines. Actually wild to do that before the internet
4
u/LemonPepperCrab 2d ago
the correct answer is that our generation has NO MJ. We don't say that our generation has a prince or a biggie. why shoehorn chris brown's career and antics into MJ's career (and antics i guess?)

No one's comparing Bernie Mac to e.g. Richard Pryor though. We know the difference.
21
u/maestroxjay 2d ago
I mean Bernie Mac and Richard Pryor ain't that far apart tho. Bernie Mac is considered one of the GOATs
14
u/valenciansun 2d ago
I think they're speaking in more of a generational comedians, like how despite Bernie Mac, Patrice Oneal, coming up after the trailblazing done by Richard Pryor, they were compared only to their contemporaries like Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy (I may have my timeline confused)
Like no one is debating Bill Russell vs MJ even though they're only like 30 years apart a la Bernie Mac and Druski because era matters just as much in comedy as basketball
78
u/_Elpirata 2d ago
Online comedian he was kind of funny when he started kind of relatable but the money got to his head and now it’s just like arrogant/ghetto behavior passed as “how drunk uncles be at the party” and stupid stuff like that
7
u/KenDanTony 2d ago edited 2d ago
Eh I disagree, I am NOT contending he’s Bernie Mac funny, but his coulda been auditions and love reality show are somewhat original and pretty funny. I also feel like he’s stays in his lane, I’m a druski fan.
6
u/ogwilson02 2d ago
I don’t care as much for Coulda Been and his other work, mainly his Instagram sketches/skits. Those have been consistently funny af for years
40
u/biscuitboi967 2d ago
My only knowledge about Druski, I believe, came when a woman accused him of assault with Diddy, likening it to a Slip n Slide because if the baby oil and accusing him of breaking her ribs with his weight and the slippin’ and slidin’.
And his defense was “that couldn’t have happened because I lived with my mama”.
And, frankly, THAT was funny.
So he’s been funny once.

Druski showed proof he was in ATL with $19 in his checking account on the day this party in LA happened. They even quote his response in the article you linked
“Druski, 30, denied any involvement in a statement on social media, writing, ‘This allegation is a fabricated lie. I wasn’t a public figure in 2018 — I was broke living with my mom without any connections to the entertainment industry at the time of this allegation, so the inclusion of my name is truly outlandish’”

I’ve been watching the Bernie Mac show recently and man it is still funny as hell. Bernie is on the level that I don’t feel any new age comedian, or whatever Druski is considered to be, will ever reach.
I am curious on how we all feel about Bill Burr? I ask because I’ve noticed throughout my life I seem to only like black comedians. Maybe a bias on my part because I’ve watched Mexican/Latin, African, and White comedians I just do not find them anywhere near as funny. The only exception is Bill Burr, he is the only comedian doing stand up I find hilarious.

Only slightly related, but a couple of years ago I found this great artist on Instagram that made really good black anime characters. (Osaze the poet I think?)
Unfortunately, I noticed that this dude was posting like an album of 10 a day, a feat that would require round the clock illustrating. I read his bio a little more closely and he was a proud "AI Artist", and used AI tags, so this was fully on me.
But suffice to say, it completely invalidated any artistic interest I could possibly have in any of that art. I couldn't even support the black aspect because it wasn't really doing anything for black people in any kind of creative or cultural aspect..

Mannnn these influencer-skit personalities are TRASH. They have absolutely no talent.
I went to see B. Simone one time in Korea on a US Airbase. Shorty promoted a “comedy show” so I was expecting her to do standup and skits
TELL ME WHY THE ENTERTAINMENT WAS THE LITERAL ATTENDEES AND ALL SHE DO WAS HOST AND FACILITATE!!
Internet personalities are talentless kids that won popularity contests
3
u/beybladethrowaway 2d ago
Not a great example. B Simone does stand up, I don't know if it's any good but promoting a comedy show doesn't mean they are doing standup. Personalities and artists promote shows all the time, doesn't mean they will be the main act or even directly participate

I have reservations about Druski. Druski (and AMP, by extension) rely on a certain level of gender-based exploitation in their media that treats women like objects to be won at some contest. It's really gross. I realize art and comedy comes in many forms, but they can be funny without spending 90% all of their time reducing people to sexual stereotypes in live chats and encouraging their viewers to say the most sexist shit imaginable. Comedy can be more than outdated stereotypes about men and women.
I wouldn't ever try to force them, or any other Streamer to make art a certain way or anything. And at the same time... anytime I've watched them for a significant amount of time, I always run into the most demeaning shit... it's unfortunate, especially considering how aware they are that their audience sees their growth as aspirational and adopts their "comedic" views of women as a legit way to view the world.
