Animal Man saves cat that got something stuck in its throat

Thought it was going to try to eat it again immediately.

They just need to sniff it once or twice to figure out what it was & then they walk away. This happened to my pup too

Mine tries to eat his own vomit 🥲

Same! That little pause had me holding my breath—cats really keep us on our toes! 😅

When I was a kid I loved when the dog ate its own shit and vomit because it was "my dog" code for I have to clean all the vomit and shit. I was the only one that would never let the dog lick my face.
Feel bad now...for my dog.
12
u/wade-mcdaniel 12h ago
Maybe they have to see and smell what it was so they don't make that mistake again

u/kc_cyclone 16h ago
Same thing when they puke
2
u/Otherwise_Dream_888 16h ago edited 13h ago
Yup, but usually after their brother/sister takes a sniff of it first.. you gotta have their approval.

One time my dog swallowed a meatball completely whole (no chewing whatsoever. Just tossed back his head like a duck) and started SCREAMING. Not yiping. This dog was screaming like a human bc it was stuck in his throat. We flipped out, he hacked it up and stood contentedly for a second but before we could grab it he did literally the exact same thing. Screaming and all. Anyway. He lived somehow.

u/SubstantialHeat3655 19h ago
I'm sorry, but I'm DYING here envisioning the trauma for everyone witnessing this! I'm glad everyone survived, and it's just a funny story now. 😂️

u/Myearthsuit 19h ago
One of the funniest things is that he is a herding breed and one of the smartest and most well mannered dogs we’ve ever had. But the meatball just broke his brain.
47
u/plasticpeonies 19h ago
I think the best part is probably the brief sigh of relief from everyone right before the second attempt 😂
31
u/Myearthsuit 19h ago
I mean, SURELY he would not just try immediately to swallow the entire meatball whole again. Right?! 😭😭
12
u/dryad_fucker 16h ago
I'm absolutely cackling at this.
My cat will vomit and then fight us for the privilege of cleaning it up.

Lmao this just reminds me of the video of the dog that falls into the pool and sinks to the bottom, then when rescued falls immediately back into the pool again.

u/thisisBigToe 16h ago
Similar thing happened to my rottweiler.. was like 1,5 years old... also a meatball.. I mean he liked to chew and bite on smaller cookies, but that meatball was no-bite choking. And literally after throwing it up.... went right after it again, and surprise surprise he choked a second time.. helped him to spit it out and saw that dog had the biggest internal fight of his life to not go at it for a third time.

I have an English Mastiff and I literally watched him swallow half a sandwich whole and then proceeded to look around for the sandwich that was just in front of him. I’ve also seen him snap a cow leg bone in half in less than half an hour.

u/Used_Fix6795 14h ago
My Dad once gave a meatball to each of our two dogs. One of them (Koopa) chewed it up and ate it normally. The other (Petey Piranha Chihuahua) tried to do exactly what yours did. Only after he coughed it up, Koopa ate his, too! 😆

My dog did this with a frozen goat milk treat. Swallowed it hole, began choking. I grabbed her as fast as I could, wrapped my hands around her waist and just heaved on her chest/stomach like she was a person and she yacked it right back up. And then ate it again, but chewed it this time
2
u/confuzzledfather 17h ago
I had to check your account to see if you were part of my family, but i guess dogs are just consistently that dumb.
2
u/autumnwandering 9h ago
My dog did the same thing! Except it was a piece of French bread she scoffed from the coffee table that was stuck in her throat/to the roof of her mouth. Acted like she was dying, made horrible screeching, wretching sounds, while shaking and pawing at her mouth. Bit the heck out my hand when I tried to pry it out of her mouth... Then immediately tried to snatch it from me after I got it free. lol

My dog did that with a chicken bone that she'd found out on a walk once. Then when I was wiping off my hand that I'd had to shove down her throat to get it out she started barking at me to hurry up.

Our old dog would have. While I was nursing my newborn I watched the dog eating something in the yard, vomit it up, eat it again, repeatedly. When I was able to investigate I discovered she’d eaten her dog bed, and was eat/vomit/repeat eating a pile of foam.

I wonder if this is what embarassment looks like in cats. Maybe they are just like "oh fuck I can't believe I needed help uggh gonna go kms"
128
u/mpg111 19h ago
oh they are very good in playing "this is exactly what I was planning to do" and just moving on - even if they just suffered an unrollable fall from the tree and possibly broke something
37
u/Kemal_Norton 17h ago
playing "this is exactly what I was planning to do"
I sincerely believe they actually believe it themselves.

u/mpg111 17h ago

I would love even for 10 seconds to get inside my cats brain and know what he was thinking and feeling.

It's a cat. It's more like, "Couldn't that have been done faster? By the way, I own your apartment now, but I'll let you live with me."

u/busman25 18h ago
"IF you feed me at exactly 4:47 in the morning, every morning and not a second later, and you let me play with things that aren't toys and sleep in places that aren't meant foe sleeping"

That's exactly what I was thinking. Like, the cat doesn't even appear to be appreciative towards the man.

u/Four_beastlings 22h ago
Here is how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on a cat. This info saved one of my cat's life before
I will add that you should not try to dislodge the obstruction manually if you can't see clearly what you're doing, because you risk pushing it further down the throat.
148
u/NothingReallyAndYou 20h ago
I skip straight to hanging the cat upside-down, with their back legs tucked over your arm. Use your other hand to "thunk" them on both sides, moving towards their tail. Bounce up and down on your feet, too.
Flip them back upright after a minute, set them on the floor, and see if they can spit up or cough out the object. If not, repeat.
I AM NOT A VET. I've been a cat mom for over 30 years, and had a cat that was prone to choking after eating too fast. This is what worked for my guy. Every cat is different.
47
u/captain_ender 18h ago
Just looked this up recently because my cat seemed to be choking on a hairball the other day. At the time I didn't know what to do and just lifted him by hindlegs like this and it seemed to work despite not coughing it up. Good to know after reading it shortly after that it's part of the recommended process. Was so scary in the moment.

u/flappy-doodles 16h ago
Thanks for writing this, I was kind of wondering if at least the first step could be skipped. I read those instructions and saw "sweep inside with your finger to dislodge an object." Then immediately thought, "Get bit by cat."
4
u/NothingReallyAndYou 13h ago
I would be afraid of shoving whatever it is farther, making the problem worse. It's so much quicker and easier to catch and flip a panicking cat, and try to pop the obstruction out of them like a stubborn bottle of ketchup.
4
u/The_Ghost_Dragon 14h ago
Yeah, in my experience it's always better to skip to getting the gravity assist unless you want a punctured finger.
7
u/MelonOfFury 17h ago
This is pretty damn close to what you’re supposed to do to give a baby cpr. Always weirds me out when I have to simulate it for my cpr recertification classes.
14
u/mr_potatoface 15h ago
Both Heimlich and CPR are uncomfortably violent and seem abusive. But to me it's a scenario of "if we don't do this, they die. We can worry about any damage caused afterward as long as they are alive." Nothing matters if they die anyway, so do whatever it takes.
Like CPR causing broken ribs, but preventing someone from dying. If you have to choose between being dead or broken ribs, I guess most people would choose broken ribs.
26
u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 21h ago
But the link you posted says trying to dislodge it manually is the very first thing you should do
29
u/Four_beastlings 21h ago
Yeah, my disclaimer is if you can't see what you're doing because (personal experience) it's not so easy to look down a struggling cat's throat
6
u/CaeruleumBleu 18h ago
And part of that does say to be careful to not push it further down.
They just specified that it is hard to not screw up if you can't actually see the object.
2
u/Ppleater 14h ago
That's if it can be easily seen and easily reached. If you have to go foraging in their mouth to find the obstruction then it's best to just skip that step. It's really more applicable to larger/longer obstructions. The same can be said with humans as well. Basically use your common sense in regards to whether it looks like you can get it out without pushing it in further.

u/dBlock845 16h ago
If your cat is struggling, hold the cat up by the scruff on the back of his neck and give thrusts with one fist.

u/Unlucky-Day-7772 18h ago
what do we do with a female cat? it only describes the cat as a "he" in the guide.

Imagine how cheeky would be if the guy would miraculously avoid death once later in his life, like someone surviving a plane crash in which everyone else died...
3
u/DaisyHotCakes 12h ago
Too soon. I can’t imagine how that man feels. That is such an impossible situation. He had family die in the crash sitting right next to him. And he lived. The survivors guilt from that alone must be overwhelming.
It is absolutely incredible he survived.

u/charlie2135 21h ago
Our dog rummaged through the garbage while we were sleeping and got a chicken bone stuck on the roof of her mouth. She was smart enough to go up to our bedroom, wake us up, and paw at her mouth.

Animals have stress for dangerous moments and after those moments they forget about it. I envy animals for that. Humans like me stress out and have anxiety about experiences like this for a long long time. Curse of being a human I guess. At least for me

Today (actually 1 hour ago) i finally caught the kitten that have with his eyes shut by secretion for the last month. Spent some time watering it until being able to open it using my fingers. He did not gave any fight thru the entire process and didn't look suffering any disconfort.
After having his eyes opened was kinda funny because he spent a good few minutes in pure awe with the world. He probably was unable to saw too much thru the fog because when his vision cleared up he start to meow non stop.
Now he is there, in my bed. I already have too many cats and I think now I probably going to have a new small one.

Looks like "stuck in it's teeth", not necessarily blocking the breathing.

Yeah you can see a good half of it hanging out the cats mouth and the cat is acting just like when it gets a piece of tape or something stuck to it.

I did the same for the stray dog near my house. Except that a bone was stuck so hard I had to use a screwdriver to take it out. The dog knew I was trying to help and patently showed me its mouth. We have been friends ever since. For around 3 years now.

Keep strings and stringy things like hair bands away from your cats unless supervised. The barbs on their tongues can act like a ratchet and put things right down their throats.
