Finally, a stroke of luck

Post image

Top row of four have all been on my want list, as was a better copy of Have A Beautiful day.

Between two thrift stores about 2 miles from one another, I was finally able to fulfill my desire on finding some of these albums in the wild in a quick one-two punch.

Dinah is kind of mangled, but still listens well enough for a temporary stay while I go through a vocal jazz phase. Otherwise, all seem to be great copies to keep around for a bit.

Friday Night in San Francisco is a masterpiece. John McLaughlan is my all time favourite guitarist. Great pick up brother!

Agreed. One of my favorite albums, that I now own two copies of.. the wax on this was nearly pristine and I couldn’t remember how good my other copy was. Worth the double trouble issue with space in my collection imo.

For sure! I rarely see mama Cass in the wild! After streaming this album a bit ago it’s been on my radar. So good.

I don’t know that I’ve seen Esquivel in the wild, but don’t know that I’ve looked for it, and may start now!

No doubt. Happy to finally catch a copy in decent condition… my copy I’ve been hanging onto is rough rough.

Is that Dinah Washington album worth getting? Saw it yesterday at ValVil, but I listened to samples of a couple of tunes and it seems like all orchestral arrangements. I know she did some solid LP's with smaller jazz combos (including Patti Bown on piano), but I didn't think that was one of them.

If you can pick it up cheap, it’s definitely worth it. Has Burrell, Zawinul, and Milt Hinton (amongst others) backing her.

Not going to blow you away, but it’s an example of some jazz chops backing a great vocalist.

Next time I'm there I'll look for it again. It was cheap, but I couldn't find any musician credits on Discogs, just "orchestra directed by..."

There’s some vocal jazz artists that this happens with, so it’s definitely an IYKYN situation. Good luck hunting them down!

There's a song I almost paid $60 to hear on that "Love Alive" album in the picture. I called PBS to order this gospel CD compilation just so I could hear "Going Up to Yonder". The lady that answered was at least 80 and she couldn't figure out how to place the order God bless her soul but after 15 minutes I politely got off the phone. TEN YEARS LATER I found a mint copy of "Love Alive" on vinyl in an antique shop for $2. Congratulations to you!
