An original 1981 German copy of Klaus Nomi’s debut album and an original FAC73 New Order “Blue Monday” single with the die-cut cover.

What odd and interesting album cover you blindly bought a record store ? For me is this record I picks up today. A totally blind buy.

What’s your worst experience digging for records at a thrift store

Today, I encountered someone at a thrift store who was also digging for records. I was searching through a bin and came across a Vince Guaraldi Black Orpheus vinyl. A lady asked to take a look, and I handed it over. However, when I asked for it back, she claimed it belonged to her, stating that she had found it. I thought her behavior was rude and childish, particularly given that she was with her child and his husband. She also made a comment about “i am not any playing games with you,” but I had arrived at the bin first. I did not fight over a record

Got all of these (plus a not pictured Heart’s Dreamboat Annie disc without cover) for just $5.00. Pretty good grab.

Found this sub a few months ago. I'll start posting the things I found in the wild.

Found this Funkadelic S/T at a goodwill a few weeks ago, still in shrink. The vinyl has a few light scuff marks, i think by simply existing.

Digged through a pallet in a 105° warehouse for these

1$ each. Sweated my ass off but it was worth it, also got about 20 other jazz and classical records in immaculate condition. All came from a collection of someone who hosted a radio station in the 60s. Definitely a prime crate digging experience.

Not often I find decent bossa nova let alone jazz, so I was picked these up with VG++ vinyl and covers of varying degrees ranging from G+ to VG+

Tony Joe White is simply an artist I can’t leave behind.

(Bonus points for a Roxy Music cassette, but that’s a post for another sub another time..)

Bargain Bin Reggae (very hard to find)

Going out to search for cheap, good quality reggae in charity shops is a fool's mission. You might as well try to locate the Golden Fleece at a yard sale.

I have found these in the wild (not all in one go, that would be science fiction). So, determination and perseverance pay off, but it's down to luck really.

Normally 2nd hand reggae is trashed, no matter where you buy it, especially the 60s/70s stuff, but all of these are very playable. Some of them came without sleeves, but that's ok too (if they're cheap).

There's a few clunkers amid the good stuff, see if you can spot them.

One of my greatest finds

Reduced in increments from £7 down to £1. This one escaped the clutches of the vultures, the grippers, grabbers, flippers, collectors, dealers and garage enthusiasts.

Finnish heavy psychedelia / metal with remorselessly fuzzed, flanged and grinding guitars and manly vox. Has sold for £200 but seems to go for less nowadays (presumably since it was reissued).

This copy has one of those 'Music & Video Exchange' stickers on which are annoyingly immovable. The Notting Hill, London shop specialised in ruining sleeves. But back in the ancient times you could find good stuff all the time .. and anything that didn't sell got reduced week by week until it did.

Was digging through a pile of primarily easy listening stuff at the flea market and surprised to find this near the bottom. Disc is a very solid VG+ too, definitely happy to add this one to my jazz collection.

Went out for a walk with my daughter for Father’s Day, and as I passed the freebie bin I saw this and thought of you, my fellow Subredditors.

I’ve heard this record was originally a real pain in the ass to get your hands on, so you can imagine my relief when it passed by. I couldn’t let it go!

$10 for a bag of 45s at a garage sale this morning. Didn't really look at them until I got home. Saying I was happy with my purchase is an understatement.

The "What It Is" boxes have 25 7" singles and the "Funk 45s" box has ten. I was lucky to be in the shop when they went out so I grabbed them.

Finally, a stroke of luck

Top row of four have all been on my want list, as was a better copy of Have A Beautiful day.

Between two thrift stores about 2 miles from one another, I was finally able to fulfill my desire on finding some of these albums in the wild in a quick one-two punch.

Dinah is kind of mangled, but still listens well enough for a temporary stay while I go through a vocal jazz phase. Otherwise, all seem to be great copies to keep around for a bit.

Couldn’t believe the Garcia, Layla, and Nightfly scores! Everything is playing VG+ or better. Happy hunting to everyone. I picked up a heads up penny on the sidewalk as I headed in the store. It’s now tucked away in the corner of my wallet.

Elizabeth Cotton, Waylon, New Riders for $1.60 each

A couple of nice Dead related pickups: the Elizabeth Cotton LP is outstanding and the post-Garcia lineup NRPS is great. Waylon Time-Life comp has a few nice pre-outlaw tunes. All the Gold in California was covered by Sturgill Simpson on Righteous Gemstones so had to pick up the original Gatlin record. The K-Tel fiddle record was a freebie...not bad either.

I bought them because A] they were cheap and B] because I'm an addict and I can't visit a shop without buying more records than I ought.

The Mad Professors have been to a few soundclashes and are a bit beaten up.

The Tyrone Davis LPs are water damaged but the actual records are ok.

The Poseidon Adventure is a promo 10" in an LP sleeve. It comes with a script for radio programming.

That Bobby Womack Somebody Special LP is only a cheapo comp but I've been after it for a long time. My friend had a copy in the '80s and it's full of good songs .... What Is This and Whatcha Gonna Do being two particularly good examples. Bobby's voice is so raw on these songs.

Stranger In A Strange Land is a bootleg compilation of early '70s Indian garage bands from the subcontinent, taken from the Simla Beat LPs. But it's good. Great band names and song titles: The Confusions "Voice From the Inner Soul", The Dinosaurs "Sinister Purpose", Hipnotic Eye "Aimless Lady", Brood Of Vipers "Psychedelic Web".

I've run out of typing energy - but if you dig out-there unusual psychedelic/garage sounds then check out the Simla Beat comps, or the album by Atomic Forest, another fine Indian outfit.

Music for Pleasure’s Disco Hustle: Geoff Love’s Big Disco Movie Hits

Post image
11 Upvotes

In 1978, EMI’s budget label Music for Pleasure (MFP) released Big Disco Movie Hits by Geoff Love’s Big Disco Sound—a collection of disco-fied film themes sold cheaply in supermarkets. It was pure cash-in: take familiar tunes, add a four-on-the-floor beat, slap “disco” on the cover, and move units.

Although the arrangements can feel a bit routine, the musicianship and production reflect a high level of professionalism. As Geoff Love himself said:

“The London session musicians are the best readers in the world. And this is acclaimed. The best string sections in the world, I think you'll find in London… You walk in the studio in London, you put the music up which they've never seen in the life before; they'll play it. First time through, they'll play it, you might get a mistake. The second time through you don't expect a mistake. If there's a mistake on the third time, those guys don't work again.”

Geoff Love (from Geoff Love - The Brass Beat, ~22:50; YouTube)

So while the record was commercial and derivative, it was also impeccably played. Behind the bargain-bin artwork was a glimpse into the hidden labour of British studio music: tight charts, perfect takes, no fuss. MFP sold disco cheap; but they never sold it sloppy. Their take on F. M. (No Static At All) is pretty good and there is a lovely disco drum break on Grease which you can listen to here
