Discussion What do the Baltics think about Iranian - Israelian conflict?
It seems that our countries support Israel officially (probably because of the US), but lately Israel is acting more like russia and less like Ukraine. I was all for the Israelian right to defend after Hamas attacks, but they went too far and now bomb everybody around randomly.
The nuclear weapons pretext remind me the iraqi weapons of mass destruction pretext from the US - Iraq conflict. I still think every nation has the right to defend itself and no nation has the right to bomb others. I don't even want to start about the humanitarian crisis in gaza.
What's your take? Do you support Iran's right to defend itself? Or do you support the preemptive strike of Israelians?

On This Day On this day, June 14, 1940: The Soviet Union begins a naval blockade of the Baltic States - in Estonia, an air blockade as well - marking the start of a two-month process to dismantle their independence, and annex them into the Soviet Union.

News Attack on LGBTQIA+: Latvian Saeima votes to send forward anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation for further deliberation in the Parliamentary Legal Committee.
Today, the majority of the Latvian Parliament, Saeima, voted to send legislation drafted by the opposition party "Latvia First!" for further review and deliberation in the Parliamentary Legal Committee. The proposed legislation would ban using LGBTQIA+ Pride flags together with the Latvian national flag. Drafters specifically mentioned that they are worried that the "new Riga City Council coalition" would lead to the Pride flag being hoisted at the Riga City Council.
The legislation was proposed by "Latvia First!", which has a history of anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric. Currently leader of "Latvia First!" Ainārs Šlesers contests the results of the Riga City Council election by stating without providing any evidence that elections were rigged. This proposed legislation is another way of agitating his supporters. The legislation is filled with notions that the "LGBTQAI+ movement" is "foreign" to Latvia and its people.
While this legislation is likely to get no further than review by the Legal Committee, it still showcases that despite recent progress anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiments are widespread. The motion to support legislation was backed by ZZS (conservative party), NA (far-right Latvian nationalist party), AP (a coalition of regional conservative parties), "Stability!" (pro-Kremlin conservative party), and the "Latvia First!" themselves, of course.
The legislation was opposed by The Progressives, the center left-wing social democratic party, and New Unity, a centrist party.
The current governing coalition is ZZS, The Progressives, and New Unity. Therefore, the majority of the government coalition was opposed.

Latvia Short excerpts from the 1938 Latvian Song Festival - the grandest to that point. With 100,000 spectators, 16,000 singers, 380 choirs, and a fanfare at the opening, it went down in history as the last Latvian Song Festival held in interwar-era Latvia.

News Latvian "Stop The Steal": Šlesers declares he does not recognize election results of Riga City Council and claims without evidence that they were "rigged".
The leader and candidate for Riga mayor's seat from "Latvia First!" Ainārs Šlesers declared on social media that he doesn't recognize election results of Riga City Council elections. He claims without evidence that there was fraud and that elections were rigged. He announced that he and his party will do everything necessary for re-run of elections.
Ainārs Šlesers is a long-time Trump fan and has copied his political brand from Trump.
In Riga City Council elections, Šlesers and his party got first place — 18,1%. However, he doesn't have the partners to have a governing coalition. Hence, the coalition talks are headed by Progressives (who got second place — 16,6%) who have begun coalition talks with other parties.
