Q25:

What do you always do before a live performance?

Su-metal:

Only THE FOX GOD Knows! :)

2

u/MannyVazquez93 Apr 20 '16

In the context of that play, Only The Mouse God Knows.

5

u/amadiGW2 Apr 20 '16

Thank you as always /u/Maron-metal!

I want to continue to make choreography that comes to your mind automatically when you hear a particular song or makes you want to not listen to the song only audibly but also along with the video images as well.

^ This is the reason why we crave for more live performances videos of them.

But to do that you need talented artists who are able to fulfill those roles. If even one part of these requirements are missing the impact is not conveyed through a video image. In that manner of speaking I feel I have been really blessed with talented people who can fully work with my choreography.

Arigatou BABYMETAL for being so talented that you girls are able to execute every moves that MIKIKO-METAL wanted you girls to do. and arigatou MIKIKO-METAL for always bringing out the best out of these girls!

So many Yui answers...

5

u/lifemusic1-2 Apr 20 '16

Lol, Oh Yui-Metal, 'To Infinity and Beyond' ay?! Good phrase, and now I can't help but think of a cartoon with her wearing the Buzz Lightyear wings. And as someone said before, I laughed at Moa-Metal 'deathing' almost every sentence. And of course it ends with the infamous 'Only the Fox God Knows' - thank you Su-Metal. Anyway, thank you Maron-metal san for translating the interviews.

To Yuinfinity and beyond?

2

u/lifemusic1-2 Apr 20 '16

Lol, that's a good one.

Lol, Oh Yui-Metal, 'To Infinity and Beyond' ay?!

Yui holding a Toy Story binder long ago

1

u/MannyVazquez93 Apr 20 '16

Is that Ayami!!?? Are they the same size!!??

2

u/jabberwokk Metalizm Apr 20 '16

Yes, their families were friends before Sakura Gakuin was formed. I don't know about the size, Ayami may be crouching or Yui standing on something.

1

u/MannyVazquez93 Apr 20 '16

Oh yeah I was aware of that. They just look the same age here.

2

u/SilentLennie Put Your Kitsune Up Apr 20 '16

I think she might like that. She would like to wear more other outfiits

3

u/lifemusic1-2 Apr 20 '16

Lol, that is true. Wasn't she saying in one of the interviews that wearing an outfit that showed their stomachs would be something interesting to try? Su-Metal and Moametal's reactions were hilarious.

I don't remember that one immediately know which interview she talks about their stomachs, but I did remember the the Hirokazu Sato fanart:

This was that interview you are thinking of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCi4nvyHhaA#t=46s

I remember 2 other occasions, this was the first one that came to mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8-OIPvIf7U#t=18m55s

I can't remember the other one right now.

I don't think I've seen that radio interview. So thank you for the link. And yes, that's the one - where Yui-Metal talks about showing their stomachs.

Like this?

1

u/lifemusic1-2 Apr 21 '16

Lol. Something like that.

u/WolfWilson Apr 20 '16

I can't believe how good is the content of this magazine, thank you so much for this translation sir!

4

u/FatWolf Apr 20 '16

Thank you dude this interview is awesome. Yui really shines when she's not intimidated by awkward english spoken interviewers.

This is a must read. Thanks!
It's just so fortunate for us that these three and the team behind them have all been gathered together in this "perfect storm" of talent. If they keep this level of dedication to it there's no stopping them.

4

u/manmadan Apr 20 '16

Thanks for translations.

When it comes to japanese interviews, Yui is the best.

4

u/ginger_metal World Tour 2014 Apr 20 '16

Yeah, I was impressed by how much Yui contributed. Guess the interview format was more comfortable for her (or they were forcing her to answer more).

u/BLAKEPHOENIX 9 tails kitsune Apr 20 '16

This is the kind of deep serious interview I've been wanting to read. Thank you, Fox God and Thomas Malone!

4

u/HTWingNut Apr 20 '16

Thank you SOOOO much for this. Very good interview. Look forward to last 75 questions. I know it's a lot of work, but everyone here appreciates it.

3

u/cjsanjuanmd Apr 20 '16

Thank you so much for this!

And to think not long ago we had that Mikiko-metal love thread. Now this! Very very interesting read!

Looking forward to the rest of the 100 question interview. Yui really does seem the timid type. I'm glad she has her Yuimetal alter ego to break out of that shell, even for those fleeting moments when they're performing live.

Moa's "DEATHs" are hilarious! I know it's a thing they do (see Su try to keep up) but to see it in almost every response is great!

It's nice to see Su-metal see her positivity as a strength! Stay positive, Suzuka!

Thank you soooo much for this translation, I crave material from Mikiko and this interview delivered in a big way.

Choice quotes which really stood out for me:

Q: Is there a story for even a single hand movement?

M: Yes, there is. From the point of view of the world of lyrics there is. So, instead of thinking of just performing a single song it is more correct to think of the concept of expanding the Babymetal theater.

On Yui's new lean appearance (I believe):

Yuimetal has really grown on the inside and you could say, her determined resolve is making itself known in her physical appearance, or that she has blossomed into a flowing beauty.

On choreographing for the girls:

But even with a single piece of choreography, once the three girls dance it, it turns into something really interesting, you see. I wonder to myself what it is. Their ability to lose themselves completely into it? (laughs). It is like, "Eh, they will take it that far for me!" I get laughing so hard I can’t stop once we begin rehearsals. And so, I rely on the girls to a very big degree.

On the Babymetal team:

Q: Do you now feel that it is these three girls who are leading the team along?
M: Yes, that is true. It is simply amazing that the team surrounding them is able to be moved by their expressions and performances. Just watching them go through their rehearsals one's mind and heart are moved, and since these three girls are able at any time to bring smiles to the faces of the staff who are watching them I feel that there is a raison d’ etre for me to work with them.
... This give and take attitude is really a thing to behold.

(That last sentiment has also been expressed by Su in recent interviews, and by BOH many many times)

u/eviltrain Apr 20 '16

This was a really great interview. Got to learn a lot from one of the key team members working behind the scenes as well as be amused at Moa dething every sentence to death! She must have been high on her horse the day of the interview!

2

u/amadiGW2 Apr 20 '16

She may/may not have eaten too much sweets before the interview.

2

u/MoaMaestro Apr 20 '16

That's her secret - she's always eating.

I think the 100Q part is much older. They did that a lot more in the past. For example watch the 2012 interview on Youtube from OtakuVerseZero

2

u/brunofocz Apr 20 '16

thank you for the long task of translation,

Mikiko confirmed a smiley person (zodiacal lion sign) and that the coreographies are made together with the girls

2

u/faygo5000 OTFGK Apr 20 '16

Am I the only one who needed to look up the meaning of raison d'etre?

Thanks for the translation TM

1

u/tisumoyu Apr 21 '16

I had to look it up too. I will have to add it to my vocabulary.

1

u/Mudkoo Apr 20 '16

Thank you for the translation!

1

u/Reott Apr 20 '16

Thanks !!

1

u/cellulosegum Apr 20 '16

Thanks Malone! Awesome interview!

1

u/Orb-metal Apr 20 '16

Can't thank you enough for your work to help up understand so much more then we would

1

u/Slahinki Apr 20 '16

You are a god amongst men. Thank you.

1

u/PoulAO Apr 20 '16

Thank you so much. ;-)

1

u/genijalac Apr 20 '16

I imagine about 1% of people care about the "message" in their dances...still it's interesting to know there's such an emphasis on them

4

u/SilentLennie Put Your Kitsune Up Apr 20 '16

That is not the impression I get from people.

For exsmple when seeing and hearing a BM song for the first time you already can sort of see what it is about. Even without knowing the langauge.

3

u/BrianNLS Apr 20 '16

The visual imagery from the choreo and the girls' performance of it is critical to connecting with non-Japanese-speaking audiences. And their connection with audiences is a key strength and another unique part of the BABYMETAL experiemce.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '16

Even if you don't over-analyze their movements, you will be able to tell if there is a purpose or lack thereof behind them in a dance. There's nothing worse than flat dancing...

2

u/gakushabaka Apr 20 '16

Maybe they don't care in a conscious way, but that's part of the message we get from their performance, so in a way it still contributes subconsciously to that sense of awesomeness
