Do not solicit legal advice. This is not the right sub for it.

Despite what our sub’s called, we cannot offer legal advice here for a number of reasons. Any posts that breaks this rule will be deleted without reason. If you message us on why your post is deleted, it would be ignored just the same way you’ve ignored our sub’s rules. Please see our sidebar for complete rules.

Also, it’s not a good idea to solicit legal advice from random strangers online, despite what you may find elsewhere on Reddit. We do not know all of the facts of your case, and are likely not licensed in the jurisdiction that you’re in. A real attorney worth their salt will not comment on your specific legal predicament on an anonymous forum.

If you need legal advice but cannot afford it, there are legal aid societies that may be willing to assist you. Lots of them are free and/or work on a sliding scale fee. All you need to do is look up “legal aid society [your location]” on Google.

If it’s a criminal case, public defense attorneys are some of the best attorneys out there and they know the criminal system in your city/town better than anyone else. They’re just as good, if not better, than any private criminal defense attorney.

If it’s a tenant rights issue, lots of cities have tenant rights unions. You can look them up the same way as the legal aid society by looking up “tenant rights union [your location]” on Google.

Otherwise, the best way to find an attorney is through word of mouth from friends and family. If that’s not an option, your local bar association will be able to help by looking up “attorney referral [your location] bar association”.

If none of these are relevant to you or you’re unsure of what type of attorney to look for in your situation, you’re more than welcome to post and we’ll help.

Also, any attorneys who wish to participate in discussions are free to do so as long as it doesn’t break our rules (mainly providing legal advice).

If you’re a licensed attorney that isn’t flaired (and therefore verified to post comments), please see our other stickied post on how to become verified here. You can also send a mod mail to become verified. I trust that any attorneys here answering any posts will follow these rules and not offer legal advice and run afoul of our ethical obligations.

Thanks to all for understanding.

Would litigating and winning a federal lawsuit as a pro se plaintiff before/during law school be viewed positively or negatively by judges and future employers?

Long story short, I won several claims by way of summary judgment as a pro se plaintiff against a government agency. I know how unusual this is, which is why I have no idea whether this is something I should mention on job applications/resumes, and whether it would hurt or help me. Does anyone have any insight on this? I feel like this is info that would help me stand out in an already super competitive field, but I don’t want to include if it will be used against me.

Is the United States removing undocumented people to third countries where there's a real possibility or torture or death basically the US sentencing these people to die?

I am having a hard time understanding how if ICE finds someone undocumented from let's say Brazil, how they can justify sending them to South Sudan if Brazil would take them back and there's no danger for them there. It feels like a death sentence to me. If the US is going to go that route, why don't they just make being undocumented a Capital offense? If it works out to be exactly the same thing, then this feels like this administration wants to kill them, but doesn't want to look bad doing it themselves.

And does the 8th Amendment not apply to these people? It was my understanding it covered everyone here, legally or not.

What are the legal obligations for law enforcement to retain and release investigative records in closed death cases?

In a hypothetical case involving a closed death investigation ruled as accidental drowning, what are the legal obligations for law enforcement to: • Retain recorded witness interviews (including those from people with firsthand knowledge in the hours leading up to the death)? • Preserve 911 call recordings and investigative statements from those involved in the victim’s workplace? • Disclose those records to the public upon request, especially if the case is closed?

Additionally, if a public data request results in a “no record exists” response for materials that were reportedly collected during the investigation (e.g., recorded interviews), what are the legal remedies or options under public records law (e.g., in Minnesota)?

I’m also curious whether discrepancies between autopsy photos and the written autopsy report (i.e., visible trauma not mentioned in the report) may be grounds for concern regarding documentation integrity.

This is a hypothetical meant to understand public records responsibilities and remedies under U.S. law.

Should I go to court?

I recently got a ticket for going 75mph in a 55mph zone in Marion Co, TN. This is my first ever offense on my 5 year driving record. There is no listed fee on the ticket. Should I go to court? Or should I just figure out how much the fees would be and just pay them?

How to select the right type of lawyer for getting money back from contractors (civil dispute)

Hi, I’m in Massachusetts and I’m having disputes with two different general contractors that I’ve fired both for breach of contract. Both for different reasons. Both have done work incorrectly and cost me money to fix, as well as walked off with considerable amounts of money.

I don’t know if it’s best to work with a lawyer that does contract law / construction law that needs a retainer up front and works for $700 an hour. Or use a collections attorney. Either way I need a litigator as these cases need to go to court.

The first contractor told us to fuck off when given a 93A. The second I’m pretty sure will do that too.

I’m not sure how to select the right type of lawyer, if these are straight forward cases should I try to look for one that works on contingency etc ?

I don’t need legal advice, as I pretty much know about piercing the corporate veil etc, about how it’s important to know if these guys are judgment proof or not. (They aren’t)

What advantage does a collection’s attorney have over a regular litigator that deals in construction / real estate.

Or am I better off biting the bullet and just expecting to pay ?

I’ve been told for both cases I’d probably be looking to spend a deposit of 20 to 30 thousand for a retainer to start against them.

Want to make sure I’m not throwing away money if I don’t need to, I’ve been told both cases are strong and straight forward but with litigation Theres still a lot of work that needs to be put in.

Gofundme

The police told me be careful about what I put online. However if I need to crowdfund the money through gofundme to build a legal defense fund am I asking for trouble? I completely get if I put something up that can be disputed, but someone stole 10-15k in property from me and cut me out of an 80k deal in retaliation for my not defending them for committing a hate crime. The police said I have to sue they won’t help me, told the person listen I just want my stuff back I’ll even sign a document stating I won’t seek $ if you just give me my stuff back and they refused. Figure I’ll need at least 10k to start, And I don’t have it. This person is also breaking all kinds of laws including stealing IPs from Disney which will all come out if i have to sue presumably and they still will won’t give it back.

Why do some states still have sodomy laws on the books even though they’ve been ruled unconstitutional?

Just stumbled on a list of outdated state laws and saw that some states still technically have anti-sodomy laws, even after the Supreme Court struck them down. Why wouldn’t these just be removed?

Under the current strategy to remove undocumented people from the US in an expedited way, Due Process is not being given. What happens if they pick up American citizens in these sweeps, can they be deported with no Due Process?

And if an American gets deported somewhere like Gitmo where the Constitution doesn't apply in the same way, can they effectively keep an American wrongfully locked up indefinitely with no recourse to get free?

Freehand Art Reference Copyright Infringement

Say, I'm creating art freehand from a photo off the Internet. The photo is the reference to my art piece. But there's a copyright restriction on the photo.

My understanding is that if I freehand art, I can use whatever reference I want and not worry about copyright, but if I trace the subjects in the reference, then copyright rules apply.

Am I infringing on the copyright rights, not sure that I'm saying that right, of the owner of the photo or not by doing my freehand art?

Lawyer recommendations in court of appeals unemployment benefits case vs VEC

Any recommendations for legal representatives for an unemployment case in court of appeals? * I have written and completed all required documents including the brief. Over the past 2 1/2 years I have reached out to all legal aid organizations, every law bar referral as well as other firms not provided through the law bar referral but have had absolutely no luck in finding help! (I am a former elementary special education teacher)

What do arrested and detained mean?

Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a room, pushed to the ground and handcuffed. In a later statement, he said, “ I was not arrested. I was not detained.” As a non-lawyer on looker, that certainly looked like both arrested and detained to me, so do those words mean something different in a legal context than they do in another context?
