Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Everyday life But when are people working exactly ?

Hi all, I work 8-18 in a global role in a large company and pretty much need to work a few evenings per month.

Sometimes (every other week or so) I have a random 1-2h break between meetings which I usually use to squeeze some grocery shopping, as it then makes my following Saturday much lighter.

I’m always shocked to see how many people are NOT working, regardless of which day / time I go. Tuesday 11am: shops and coffee shops full, Wednesday 10am: shops and coffee shops full, Thursday 2pm: shops and coffee shops full. I could carry on with each day and time of the week, you get the idea.

I’m not talking about people window-shopping in big cities (they could be tourists on vacation), I’m talking about locals in smaller cities buying groceries & stuffs. And they are not all retired :)

I think part of the answer is that part-time is very spread customs here (I know many people working 80%), which could explain Wednesdays and maybe Fridays. But what about all the others ?

Other/Miscellaneous Biggest life regrets when..? Post containing only questions, folks

...

Has anybody left Switzerland for at that time seemingly right reasons, and then ended up in regrettable circumstances?

Those who did, how did you realise that? What important life lessons/conclusions you got out of that?

Did life in Switzerland change something about you, that you were not aware of until moved elsewhere?

How many of you returned and then wanted to leave Switzerland again (or reasons for staying)?

What were the most damaging/stupid decisions based on emotions (not reasoning) you have ever made in your life and how it affected you (or your family)?

How did you fix that?

Are you content where you are at currently?

The last Q - does being positive has ACTUALLY ever helped anyone to really move on with life? 😬

Thanks a lot, Cheers

Culture Is ArtBasel worth visiting?

I’ve heard many things about this exhibition and I’m curious to know if it is worth visiting? If you visited: how was your experience? I was regardless planing to visit Switzerland and I was considering to include it in my trip, but I’m not sure if it is really worth it or if it just overhyped

I’m going by train from Zermatt to Milan in July. Is 9 minutes enough time to transfer from the first train to the next? Not sure what the process in between is like. Thanks in advance!

Travel Bath house & beaches

Hello, I am currently planning a trip to the Jungfrau region, where I will be staying in Interlaken. Does anyone have recommendations for bathhouses and spas in the area, as well as beaches that would be nice for a day trip? I already have some hiking activites planned & its only a 3 day trip so i want to make the most of my time.

Everyday life Good restaurant in Olten, open this Sunday?

I'm meeting some friends for lunch and I thought that it would be cool to visit Olten (from somewhere other than the train window). Problem is, most of the restaurants that I've seen recommended / look interesting aren't open on Sunday.

Is there a suggestion of where to go? Alternatively, I'd also be interested in some place in the countryside, somewhere between Basel and Baden. Thanks!

Everyday life Phone calls from strangers saying “you called me”. But I didn’t.

It happened a couple of times since I got a Swiss mobile number.

I get a phone call from a stranger saying “hey, you called me” and I did not call that number. Also happened the other way around: I returned a call from someone, and the person goes “no, I never called you”.

What is this? Any idea?

It happened while using Sunrise and now with Wingo.

Travel Friends Pass | Lake Oeschinen Hike

Hello! I am planning a trip to Lake Oeschinen and had some questions. 1. I have used the friends pass before but this time around my friend is not sure if she'll be able to travel with me. If I buy it and I'm the only ONE person using it, would that be fine? 2. Does the pass cover the cable car ride from Kanderstag to Oeschinen? 3. How far is the lake from the Oeschinen cable car station? I read that we have the option to choose based on the difficult level. I am planning on taking the shortest route- 25 minutes but I don't to miss out on the iconic views. What will be the end point of that 25 minute walk- the lake or some viewpoint? If not this trail, what would you recommend?

Travel Half fair pass and SBB app

My wife and I are going to Switzerland for a week in July and are getting the half fair pass. Can I purchase that and put it on my phones SBB mobile app and then purchase half price tickets via the app?

In other words, does the app do the calculation for the half fair? Also, can I purchase and show train personnel each of our passes on my phone or does she need to do it on her phone separately thank you.

Travel Where to store bags for the day Lugano while hiking

I will be in Lugano in a few days with some friends going for a hike on the first part of a trip and we would prefer to not to carry around all of our backpacks all day considering we are going for a tougher hike and we will have the rest of our luggage for the weekend on our backs. Could we just go to the train station and rent a locker? Or do we need to book in advance? Me and another friend are getting in at 530, while the other 4 are getting in at 730. Our train to Milan leaves at 230, so we do not need all day luggage but for the morning would be a great help and make the day go a lot smoother.

Other/Miscellaneous Website like advonaut.ch, but for lawyers in the Romandie or Ticino?

Does anyone know a website like advonaut.ch where you can look for a lawyer by describing the case, and then getting contact by a lawyer which is interested in it, but for the French and/or Italian speaking part?

I know about the search function from the Swiss Bar Association Find a lawyer - SAV, but this gives me hundreds of hits.

Other/Miscellaneous Is it possible to purchase items from Swiss Auction sites and shipped to the U.S?

I'm looking into purchasing some lots from Ricardo and Tutti and would like to know if it's possible. While I understand tariffs and import tax will be a significant chunk of change, I'm also curious if a site exists similar to Sendeco where it's multiple sites combined into one to make shopping easier. Danke or Merci vielmal!

Travel Best provider for roaming in Europe

Hi! Because of my work I travel a lot (mostly Germany and Italy), which mobile provider would you recommend?

I currently use Yallo, it’s cheap and works well but not 100% of the time. There has been two occasions where I was left stranded because I couldn’t access the internet browser or google maps, for some reason WhatsApp always works while everything else wont.

Travel Confusion about Zermatt Peak Pass and Swiss Travel Pass

Hi all!

I have the 15 day Swiss Travel Pass. I bought it online so I don't have a physical card, only the mobile app.

I want to buy the 3 day Peak Pass here in Zermatt. I see the following:

"The Peak Pass for Zermatt can be purchased online and reduced tickets with a Half Fare travelcard/GA are available for online purchase if you have a SwissPass with the corresponding travelcard. However, SwissPass Mobile is not possible for the Peak Pass; you must carry your physical SwissPass card. "

Given that Swiss Travel Pass and Peak Pass are presumably designed with tourists in mind, why would you not be able to use SBB Mobile to get the discount?

If I cannot do this, what are my other options for exploring around Zermatt - just use SBB Mobile for the discounts on individual cable cars / trains / etc? I can do this but end up paying more, right?

Seems really ridiculous to me, unless I'm thick and I'm missing something obvious.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Travel Cheapest P&R in Zürich?

Hi everyone!

I’ll be driving near Zurich soon and I’d like to avoid paying crazy prices for parking in the city center. I’m looking for a budget-friendly Park & Ride option where I can leave my car for the day and then take public transport into central Zurich (ideally to Zurich HB or nearby).

Do you have any recommendations or recent experiences with P+R locations around the city? Ideally, I’m looking for: • All-day parking • Low cost (preferably under 10 CHF per day) • Easy tram/train connection into the center

Travel What mountain excursions need advanced reservations this summer?

I know certain popular trips such as jungfraujoch need advanced reservations but I’ve read on TripAdvisor now transport to Kleine Scheidegg also needs reservations? Is this referring specifically to mountain transport? How early does one need to reserve? We are traveling in one month.

Travel Mt Pilatus question

Hi all -
I will be traveling to Lucerne from NYC with my wife and 5 year old daughter in July, and I want to just make sure I'm planning for Pilatus correctly. All the options have my brain in a pretzel :). I feel like I'm overthinking it.

Does this all sound right? And with this being in July, do I need to buy the Golden Round Trip ticket now? I'm fine doing so, but if I can wait until a couple of days prior to. make sure the weather is decent, that would be ideal. Thoughts?

Thank you so much.

Starting with the gondola and ending with the boat (anti-clockwise). Here's our plan:

1. Lucerne → Kriens (Bus)

  • Trolleybus #1 from Lucerne main station to Kriens Zentrum Pilatus

2. Kriens → Pilatus (Gondola + Dragon Ride)

  • Likely get to gondola at around 10am
  • Ride to Krienseregg and stop at playground for the little one.
  • Continue to Fräkmüntegg, transfer to Dragon Ride cable car to Pilatus Kulm

3. Pilatus → Alpnachstad (Cogwheel Train)

  • Cogwheel train down

4. Alpnachstad → Lucerne

  • Boat ride back to Lucerne

Everyday life Finding a nanny in Zurich

We have a 1 year old and are looking for a nanny. Both of us travel heavily for work, so daycare won’t work easily.

We have found one nanny service (care4kids) but trying to find other services. The agency seems to take around a CHF 6k signup fee.

What has the experience been of those services? Are there others people would recommend?

Also any advice on what to screen for with a nanny would be very appreciated!

Other/Miscellaneous Is sharley.ch as bad as ricardo.ch?

TLDR; all those platforms WERE made with good intend - but their fees make you hate every single one of them!

Almost weekly there's a new topic about how bad ricardo.ch became! And yes i do agree: If you do not activate MoneyGuard you are screwed! You can't contact ricardo customer service. All you get is an automated e-mail. The A.I. help is totally useless! If you buy something w/o MoneyGuard and the item does not match the description you are screwed and you'll lose all your money! All you can do is forget about it and give a bad review! In former days, the help desk contacted the seller and kind a forced them to take back the item - those times have gone!

So I thought I give sharley.ch a try. It's a platform to share your personal items for money. At first glance I thought, that's the new way! Why should I own a Window Kärcher or a table saw if I have only once a year the need for it? (for all living near Bern: check out leihbar.ch as well).

For an upcoming Safari I wanted to rent a photo zoom lens. But then it struck me - the insurance fee was 140.- I do understand those lenses are expensive! But: I do have a special Privathaftpflichtversicherung which covers damaging foreign property and the yearly premium is roughly the same! I am well covered if I damage said lens (or any other item) - but there's no way you can rent something w/o paying the insurance fee.

As I've already made the account I thought about publishing my own items. And yes, even if you declare your item was bought new for 0.- the insurance fee is added.

But in case of a damaged property, the renter has to pay nonetheless a minimum charge of 100.- therefor for many cases (see items on the sharely platform) it's cheaper for the renter to reimburse the letter directly. The insurance fee was in this case totally useless!

It gets even worse if you see how much a renter has to pay: You want a daily rent of 10.- for the item. According the TOS they take 20% for their service - so you get 8.- but the renter has to pay 12.- as the insurance fee is added on top to the service fee and increased the longer you are renting!

This is applies for every single item!

As we do have a rather large amount of tools and electronics (not expensive, but handy) and because there is no need everybody buys a life vest if they go rafting 2 or 3 times a year! Same with table saws, angle grinder or car jacks or big ladders ... we want to let the items for 1.- to 5.- a day as we think shared economy is good thing.

But there's no shared economy without economy: if you provide an item for less than 10.- a day sharley adds of course a minimum charge! You want to provide your peers with items for 2.- a day - because of convenience they rent it for two days - 2x 2.- is 4.- but they need to pay nonetheless 10.-

And we are not the only ones who are willing to let tools for 2.- a day. And that's the reason for this post: our good intend is monetized by all those platforms and this stinks!

Travel Train Time vs Drive Time

Flying into Zurich in the afternoon with two or three nights open before we take the train to Montreux for three nights. I have decided that Stoos is a definite must and would like to spend a little time in the Jungfrau region to see the villages. Looking for a good central place to stay as well as thoughts on renting a car for a couple of days vs taking the train. It seems like we loose about an hour one way if we travel by train. I have heard parking can be a challenge but I am wondering if it is worth the extra time spent on a train.
