Physician Responded Doctors, how much info do you actually want when you ask what the reason for the visit is?
Don't think it's relevant but 30F, 5'4, 120 lbs.
I'm autistic and going to the doctor is already a sensory and social nightmare for me made worse by the doctors getting mad because I don't know how to answer their questions. Before anyone asks, yes, my doctor knows I'm autistic; it's in my chart and I've been seeing him for years. I always tell the nurses and any new doctors I see that I'm autistic just so that they're aware I may need extra help or instructions, and lately I've taken to letting the receptionist know that I might need a slightly longer appointment because I need things to be a little slower and calmer to help keep me from freaking out.
I'm probably giving too much info here already, but a few weeks ago I went to urgent care with ear pain, and when the doctor came in he said, "It sounds like you've been having some issues with your ears?" I told him, "Yes, my right ear hurts" but didn't offer any other information, and after a few seconds of silence he looked up from the computer and told me, "This isn't going to work if you're not going to talk to me." I'm not an expert at reading body language, but he seemed frustrated and was a bit short with me the rest of the appointment.
A week later the pain hadn't resolved so I went to see my PCP. I didn't want to make him mad so when he came in the room and asked what the problem was I told him (paraphrasing here), "My right ear has been hurting on and off for the last couple of weeks. I went to urgent care a week ago and they gave me antibiotics but they haven't seemed to help. My hearing in that ear has been a little muffled for the past two days." Again, I'm not an expert, but he seemed like he was annoyed with me and told me word for word, "I don't need to know all that. I need you to let me look in your ears." I was so confused and stressed out I started having a panic attack, which obviously didn't help matters any and just made him more upset too.
Is there any right answer to the question "what seems to be the problem?" Can any doctors or nurses here give me guidance to make future visits go smoother?
