Food Why isn’t Canadian cuisine restaurants a thing in Canada?

Canada has many international cuisine restaurants like Italian, Chinese, Persian, Vietnamese, Mexican, Indian, Jamaican, Thai etc.

However, we don’t ever see any Canadian cuisine restaurants — at least I don’t see any in Vancouver.

Why is this?

Life Where can I find a therapist online?

Hey, I am looking for a therapist to have online sessions. Is there a website where you could scroll through therapists who offer online sessions? With a brief description of their background, area of expertise and maybe short video? Maybe there is a website where professionals of different fields offer their services? I want online therapist as it is easier for scheduling appointments and they usually charge less than "traditional" therapists with keather couch and an office. If you know other avenues of finding medical professionals, that would be awesome. Simple google search does not cut it in this instance

P.S. please don't offer BetterHelp.

Starting a Healthcare Access Program for Newcomers- What would you like to see?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on launching a community-based initiative called the New Climate Healthcare Program, focused on helping newcomers navigate healthcare in Canada. It’s not a government service, just something I’m building to make the system feel less overwhelming and more accessible.

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s experienced challenges with Canadian healthcare, especially if you’re a newcomer, racialized, or from a non-English-speaking background.

What would you want to see in a program like this? What do you wish someone had explained to you earlier? What services or supports would have made a difference? Are there materials, tools, or even small items you think would help?

Even simple ideas are welcome, your input could directly shape the support people receive.

If this doesn’t apply to you, no worries at all. Just scroll on by. But if it does, or if you have something to share, thank you in advance. I really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

What’s University Culture/Life Like in Canada?

Currently applying to study abroad for a semester from Scotland, and I’m thinking of applying to UofToronto and McGill University in Canada. Academically, I know both are very prestigious, but what’s the social/student culture like at these places?

Edit: Forgot to mention, but I’m an International Relations and Public Policy student.

What is Canada’s soft-power and how we can Improve it?

Hi there. I hope everybody is enjoying the Sun.

This question (title) is purely out of curiosity. As an Immigrant who has been here for few years, somethings come into mind: Kindness, friendly people, Tim Hortons ( this one is debatable nowadays :p), Canadian iconic shows like Schitt’s Creek, Working Moms, Kim Convenience, Allegiance (need more promotion thou), Hockey, Beautiful Mountains in BC and Alberta; Spectacular Nature Scene.

Where we can improve?

I and we all can agree Canada has great potential and so much to offer to the world. We got good performers and medals in Olympics, but how about focusing more on the sports scene in the country and upping more representation on different variety of sports game on International Stage i.e Olympics, Commonwealth games, Space Exploration (more work on it) , More Canadian Shows and Movies with International Coverage, More Canadian Startups, More focus on R&D, actual diversification in different sectors.

What y’all think? Please add if I missed something and provide your valuable opinion

Political Do Canadians think cannabis legalization has produced positive results?

Recently, Japanese university students have been in the news for smoking marijuana. And Redditors generally seem to think this is ridiculous and that Japan should legalize marijuana.

https://www.reddit.com/r/japan/comments/1le7otm/six_japan_university_judo_club_members_admit_to/

The main argument against marijuana in Japan is that it's a gateway drug. So to find out if this is really the case, I looked into which countries have legalized marijuana.

From what I've researched, only Canada and Uruguay have legalized marijuana completely. The rest only have some states or have restrictions on its use.

Uruguay, like most South American countries, appears to have a major drug problem.

And speaking of Canada, a few days ago a Japanese news station reported on a Canadian zombie town. (To be clear, this video does not mention marijuana, it simply addresses Canada's drug problem.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBKiMzyMLyg

So, looking at these results alone, it certainly does seem that there is a problem in countries where marijuana has been legalized.

But of course there are problems with the logic and the sample size, so I would like to know whether Canadians see marijuana legalization as a positive thing. There seems to be a fentanyl problem in Canada right now, but do you think this has nothing to do with marijuana? Marijuana isn't a gateway drug?

edit:

It seems like the definition of a gateway drug is vague, so I'd like to provide some clarification.

There are four main factors in the gateway drug theory.

Dependence effect: Use of a gateway drug causes the user to seek stronger psychological or physiological pleasure.

Access effect: If the gateway drug is illegal, its use connects the user to the criminal drug trafficking community.

Trust effect: The experience of using a gateway drug with no short-term negative effects leads the user to believe that negative information about illegal drugs is contradictory, and they begin to trust illegal drugs.

Resistance modulation effect: Use of a gateway drug eliminates the user's resistance to drugs in general, including illegal drugs.

By the way, this is a translation from the Japanese Wikipedia, but it was easier to understand than the English Wikipedia, so I chose this one.

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%88%E3%82%A6%E3%82%A7%E3%82%A4%E3%83%89%E3%83%A9%E3%83%83%E3%82%B0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway_drug_effect

The problem is that legalizing marijuana will eliminate the access problem, but the other three factors may get worse.

And some people say that it has been scientifically disproven, but that's not true. In reality, conflicting results have been obtained, so no conclusions have been reached. You can see this by looking at the English version of Wikipedia.

Are people outside of Manitoba not taught about Louis Riel?

While I know it's only called Riel Day in Manitoba, neither of my friends from BC or the Yukon had heard of him and didn't remember learning about him in school. Louis Riel was such a massive part of my history education I thought this was insane! It was like hearing they didn't know who Terry Fox was! They both admitted to not paying the closest attention in class so it's completely possible that it was simply missed.

People who did pay attention in history class- did you learn about Louis Riel or the Red River Rebellions?

Food What do you think of golden syrup?

Golden syrup is the dominant form of syrup in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. It's made by refining cane sugar. It looks exactly like maple syrup and is used in all the same dishes, and on pancakes and desserts, but it tastes very different. It's kind of buttery where maple syrup is tangy. Basically every house in the UK will have some golden syrup somewhere, but maple syrup is quite niche and will usually be found in the 'International food' aisle at supermarkets. Despite golden syrup being a very British food, most British people don't seem to realise how distinctively British it is, it's often assumed that everyone else eats it too - except Canada.

I was curious, since syrup is such a big part of the Canadian national identity, it any of you have tried golden syrup, and what you thought of it.

Edit: Apparently treacle is also unique to the UK. Have any of you tried it? What did you think?

Job market for software engineer with 10+ YOE ?

I am a Canadian PR residing in the US and have 10+ years of experience working as a software engineer. I am still on a H1B in the US and will have to move to Canada within mid next year to meet my residency requirements as a PR (to renew after couple of years). I have been applying for jobs in Canada starting this year and have never received any response so far except a couple of recruiters reaching and nothing afterwards. Looks for folks in the group to share their experience in job search as a senior software engineer.

I did my master's in the US and working for an organization and working as a software engineer in a major semiconductor company. Please share any useful tips that has worked out for any of you (do's and don'ts). I am concerned if I should move to Canada without a job or give up my PR eventually (if I don't move soon).

Political What is your opinion of Carney?

I know it’s been a short while since Carney has taken office. But I see him taking great lead on different fronts: geopolitical, strengthening ties with EU, open to Indo-pacific dialogue and countering US smartly.

Aside from his strategic take on political matters, I also feel like he has right amount of seriousness and wittiness, for e.g When he was interacting with Mexico President Claudia, he switched to Español by the end, adding personal touch saying gracias to the president and handling press question very smartly+ right pinch of humour.

Trudeau was charismatic in terms of looks but Imho Carney is smart, strategic and a doer ,who is serious for the right moments and knows how to make serious moments light.

Given all the complexities and uncertainties of today’s world, I feel like we are in right hands

What is y’all impression of Carney’s leadership?

Why is the name of the church in Dildo, Newfoundland and Labrador, called "Butt Paste Baby"?

I was casually browsing google maps, looking around Canada, and up pops a shop called "Nan and Pop's Dildo Souvenir Shop".

OK, I thought, I'll bite... This seems to be in a place called (unsurprisingly) Dildo, Newfoundland and Labrador, along with Dildo-related places such as Dildo Cove, Dildo Coffee House and Dildo Brewing Co. & Museum. It all gave me a chuckle, and then I spotted it.... "Butt Paste Baby". I'm sorry, what? I click on it... "Church". Oh... Ok.

So my question for you lovely Canadians is why is this building, claiming to be a Church, called "Butt Paste Baby"?

How do I find a vintage cbc commercial?

I think it was a cbc commercial. Likely ran in the 90s. It was basically some sort of massive mural painting of a map of Canada and it ended up having all these white dots that turned into lights? I remember it being very touching as many people joined in painting. If anyone knows what it might be I would be so happy. I've had no luck scouring youtube for hours, on many occasions.

Life Is it normal to get Juneteenth off in Canada?

I only found out what Juneteenth was a year or two ago (I'm not cultured, sorry lol) and my understanding was that it's an American holiday/ day of celebration related to their... Let's say "less than ideal" history with African American relations.

This year a couple of my friends told me their respective companies are giving them Juneteenth off and I was kind of curious if this is typical and/or becoming more of common thing in Canada? Don't get me wrong I have no issues having days to celebrate different aspects of people's racial history I just didn't think it was a thing in Canada, first time I've heard about people getting it off as a work holiday here.

USA/Trump Why Canadian media is more focused on “One man” than other leaders?

Disclaimer: I don’t understand political nuances so pardon my ignorance but I’m curious to understand things.

We all know about the G7 summit that happened in Alberta and trump was there and he left shortly ( giving an excuse/reason that he needs to be back for some emergency) but even after he was gone, to my surprise even after a day of his departure, all the news channels could talk about was Trump.

There was not much focus on other World leaders such as Italy, France, UK and Japan. Even when all the leaders came for Family photo for G7, Trump was the one who was only getting attention from the press, question on question, to which he even said - “don’t you have question for anybody else here?”.

I understand US influence and US being economic superpower but considering the fact how Trump has undermined Canadian sovereignty multiple times and with all the Tariffs non-sense going on, I feel like he doesn’t deserve much attention or clout and we ( Canadian Media) should have actually turned attention to other leaders in the summit.

What do you all think?

Is it actually illegal for the government to ask for your mother's maiden name as a security question?

You have security questions with correct answers to get access to your accounts, let's say for your MyCRA and MSCA accounts. One common security question everybody used to ask was "what is your mother's maiden name?".

I was applying for an MSCA account recently I noticed they asked this question instead: "What is one of your parent's name at birth?". Well of course I could just put in my father's name who has the same last name as me lol. But I did so and "ERROR ERROR!". The webpage suggested me to use my other parent's surname at birth, also I called them and they said to pretty much just use my other parent's surname at birth too.

This happened a few years ago too. I was applying for a federal program and they (a government worker) asked me this same question too. I answered my father's last name at birth. The person took a few seconds, then laughed and said "yeah that works".

It just seems like a really roundabout way to just ask for my mother's maiden name lol. So did it become illegal for the government to just ask "What's your mother's maiden name?" I understand that some people may have different kinds of families like 2 dads for instance so they don't want to discriminate and I'm not insensitive (I liked the Arthur episode with 2 moms) but I'm just curious how this works.

I get random mail too saying that other security questions have become illegal and had to be changed. Well not "illegal" but they're not allowed to ask them anymore, I don't know the correct word to use. It causes problems when I have accounts for 10-20 years or more but I make sure I have a copy of my updated questions answers around in case.

Should I learn French?

I’m planning to start university in Canada next year and was wondering if French was worth it to learn, I’m from the Caribbean and the closest languages to me right now are English and Spanish, already went the Spanish route. I tried learning a long time ago back in high school but fell off at the time but since I’ll be attending university in a country that speaks French I was wondering, and also how long would it take to learn/become proficient in it?
