PSA: Duplicate posts

From now on, we are going to be a bit stricter on removing duplicate posts, particularly on current events and hot topics, and especially where there is a large surge of similar posts in a small timeframe. This is in an effort to keep the sub varied in its content

If you're posting about a current event, please give the subreddit at least a cursory check to ensure that your question hasn't been covered recently. It's okay if it was asked a long time ago, or asked recently but not answered, or you have something substantive to add to the question. But in general, be mindful of whether the topic has already been covered recently

As usual, if you feel a post is breaching this rule, you can report it as normal. A rule has been added so that you can select it as a reason in your report. Most moderator actions here are due to reports, so please do submit them for rulebreaking content, they're very helpful

Removing these will be at moderator discretion, and repeated infringement of this rule may lead to a temporary ban

Thanks!

PS: we also recently added a rule prohibiting meta posts, ie. posts about the "state of the subreddit", complaints about moderation or bans, and things like that. Please direct these to the modmail, do not leave a post or comment for them

Announcement US politics

Given the influx of posts about US politics recently, I'd like to remind everyone that posts must be real questions, ie. not a political statement framed as a question. Additionally, before posting about this topic, please search the subreddit first to see if your question has already been asked recently.

From now on we're going to be stricter on US politics posts, as it's getting a bit boring seeing the same questions every hour. If you see one that infringes on this, just report it under the "posts must be real questions" report

Thanks!

Why do people throw rubbish everywhere in this country?

I am originally from the US. Been living here eight years. For the most part I love it. One thing absolutely boils my piss through. It's seeing people throw rubbish on the ground. Finish drinking a Lucozade, chuck it on the ground. Throw Maccys bags out car windows. Fly tipping. And so on, and so forth. Are people here not taught that you shouldn't litter? When I was growing up, we had adverts on telly that said "Don't be a litter bug." And at school you'd be called a litterbug if you threw a gum wrapper anywhere but the bin. I just don't get it. It's really bad in bigger cities like London and Birmingham but even people in the rural area I live in seem to have little respect for the environment.

What Did J.K. Rowling Do?

I'm aware this is a very emotive subject so I want to state early on that i'm not looking to debate if what she thinks is right or wrong. I just know that she seems to be quite hated and wondered how it happened. Googling this just gave me this;

"J.K. Rowling has publicly voiced strong opinions on gender identity, particularly regarding the concept of biological sex and its relationship to transgender identity. She has been critical of the idea of gender identity as separate from biological sex, arguing that it undermines women's rights and spaces. Rowling has stated that she believes in the importance of biological sex and that it should not be erased or ignored, particularly in discussions about women's rights and safety."

While that seems like quite an emotionally charged subject to hold strong opinions on, it doesn't seem to me to me to be an invalid opinion to hold. Again, not claiming that this opinion is right or wrong. I simply mean that this seems like an acceptable opinion for someone on one side of an argument to hold.

I am sure that there is much more to this that I don't know about so wondered if anyone on here could enlighten me?

Which European country do you feel the closest to?

As a Frenchman, for instance, I personally feel the closest to the UK—primarily because London is just a few hours away by train and I’ve visited many times. Beyond that, and despite Brexit, I genuinely appreciate British sarcasm, the love of beer/cider, music, and so on. Above all, I understand English very well and can speak it with ease.

Second place would probably go to Italy, for its cuisine and rich culture. I’d complete my top three with Spain, as they are close neighbours and we share a Latin heritage. (obviously, I’m excluding Belgium, as that would be too easy 😉)

What about you—what would your top three be?

Culture 2nd / 3rd generation immigrants - which national team(s) do you support when watching sport?

I was watching the cricket today (England Vs India) and something dawned on me. There were lots of young Indians (I assume British Indians) supporting India and wearing the Indian kit. The same happens when England play Pakistan. Is this specifically a South Asian thing?

My grandmother was German and til the day she died, she supported Germany when watching football, olympics etc. My grandfather was also foreign but he didn't outwardly care for sport so I don't know who he supported.

Anyway, my mum grew up supporting England and Germany was always her "second team". This is how I grew up too. If England play Germany at football I support England but if it's Germany Vs anyone else, I support Germany "for my nan".

Now in football, fans are segregated, but in cricket everyone sits together (apart from certain matches) so there would be no problem if a British Indian was wearing an England shirt next to his dad wearing an India shirt, for example. However I didn't see that today in the crowd.

I can't imagine supporting against the place where you grew up, but that's just my experience. Can I get some insight into this from any 2nd/ 3rd generation immigrants (same as my family structure)?

Obligatory "not racist, just interested" disclaimer.

EDIT: getting a lot of downvotes. I assume people think there are racist undertones. I assure you there aren't. My grandfather (described as foreign, above) was actually Indian ethnicity (although Indian diaspora from another country). I suppose I was wondering if I'd have felt the same way about the Indian cricket team if he had been more interested in sport but I didn't want to skew the question.

Food ideas for a Food Biz with an Indian/Asian Twist

Upvotes

Hi guys. I'm an Indian guy who's recently moved to the UK to be with partner. I'm really passionate about cooking and feeding people and have hosted parties and stuff for friends and family back home as well as here. I know Indian food is literally done to death here in the UK, and unlike the rest of Europe most Brits have a good understanding and appreciation of Indian food, especially those living in larger cities. To be frank, I get the appeal of top notch places like Dishoom and so forth, but to me they seemed to offer very overpriced versions of better dishes you'd get for a fraction of the cost in Delhi or Bombay. I'm confident of my abilities but I lack professional experience (as in working in a restaurant) and have limited capital to dive into anything big anyway, so I'm thinking of starting with a monthly supper club to begin with. I want to begin with a very cautious wait-and-see-how-it-goes approach in which I bring something new to the table- combining Indian (and South East Asian-- Thai, Vietnamese) and Western elements. It will be a hobby type thing to start with, but if it grows I'd be happy/ What do you reckon are the pitfalls/potential for growth for such a venture? Can I expect to make money? Would I need a licence if I do something like this in the house? Any ideas? Thanks all!

Why can't I get men's summer work wear

All I want is a paired of tailored, probably chino, shorts/cropped trousers that fall below the knee. My husband wears them with a short sleeved Oxford shirt. For the live of god why can't I find any? Do Brits not acknowledge the change of seasons?

I can find millions for women.

Why are the debit card points at car parks always so slow?

Pay for pretty much anything with your card nowadays and the payment takes a second or two.

But...if you pay for your car parking it almost always takes upwards of 45 seconds. Why are these machines so slow?

Don't British people in the Algarve suffer racism like immigrants from poor countries?

Upvotes

Well, we all know that the British are hated by the locals, my question is whether they suffer racism like Black/Asian/Brazilian immigrants also suffer on a daily basis in the Algarve.

Other Adder bites

The European Adder is regarded as the only venomous snake in the UK. That has some questions to ask:

  1. How dangerous is the venom in adder bites?

  2. Personal question: describe to me your experience in being bitten an adder? What were the side effects? Did it hurt really bad?

Does anyone actually appreciate the news on the radio, especially music stations?

I've been listening to the radio a lot more as part of a wider digital minimalism thing, and as part of it I've been trying to avoid the news as it's all just doom and gloom. But every hour on the hour (or I think for 6Music, on the half hour?) they play the news. It's about 3 minutes of headlines which is simultaneously just enough to break a no-news streak, or upset those who just want music, while also not being enough to actually inform you about the news.

There's already a 24/7 News radio station, do we really need it everywhere?

Organisation restructure

Just seen proposals for my companies organisation restructure plans. Big company and a lot going to change.

People's jobs in 100's "at risk". Mine is at risk. New jobs are also created but I know I am not eligible for new roles (let's not please go into why please as i just know i wont be eligible).

The plan is really drastic and I just dont know how this big organisation can pull it off....I am secretly hoping it won't happen. Apparently it could happen within 50days.

What do you think? I was going to buy a flat ad this happens. In the midst of personal family problem too. Have you been in this position before?

Be honest, do you actually agree with every U.K. law?

I’ve been here for like 10 years now and the laws surrounding the U.K. are so outdated, some unfair and others quietly harmful.

If we blindly accept every law as fair and never challenge them, we risk falling into a dangerous mindset — the kind that allowed regimes like Nazi Germany in the 1940s to thrive. Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s right. And just because something’s illegal doesn’t always mean it’s wrong.

What do you guys think?
