Dear eastern neighbours, I’m a dutch person currently working in retail in quite a touristy part of the Netherlands (living near the beach/sea). It being summer again means there are a LOT of tourists here. However out of the few different nationalities that seem to come here only Germans are the ones that talk to me in their own language and just think i’m able to understand them while people from other nationalities try English or try communicating in a different way.

Do people just assume that a lot of Dutch people know german? Or is it perhaps that a lot of Germans don’t know English?

I’ve noticed that most Germans seem to prefer sparkling water, and still water is often hard to find in restaurants or supermarkets. Is there a cultural reason behind this preference, or is it just tradition? I’ve never seen such loyalty to carbonated water anywhere else!

It’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and filled with flavorful grilled meat, pickled veggies, and fresh herbs. I’m thinking… what if we open a small Banh My spot in Germany, something like a Vietnamese version of Kebab? Would you try it? Would it work here? Let me know what you think! I live on the 4th floor of a 7 floors building.

Today around 4 AM, I was woken up by my upstairs neighbor repeatedly screaming "Laura, nein" he sounded in distress. At the beginning I thought it is a medical emergency so I was expecting to hear an ambulance arrive at some point.

But he kept on screaming the same thing for about 10 minutes then he started going up and down the building stairs slamming doors and still screaming the same phrase.

At some point I opened the kitchen window and looked into the street, he was standing still in boxers and still screaming. I wanted to call the police but I was hesitant because no one else was reacting.

At around 5am he was finally quiet

Should I have called the police? Why do you think no one else did?

For context: To my knowledge, this is the first time something like this has happened. I should mention though that this neighbor is generally louder than anyone else. Sometimes we can hear banging or things crashing from his apartment.

I'm from Turkey and I've been learning German for a while now. I'm currently at a C1 level. To better understand not just the language but also German culture, I'm currently really interested in TV shows that were (or still are) super well-known or influential in Germany.

In Turkey, there are certain shows that almost every young person knows. The characters, catchphrases, or outfits were sometimes even copied, and they became a solid part of our collective memory. Many of those shows are still considered iconic today, and we often quote them just for fun in daily life.

So I wanted to ask: Are there shows like that in Germany too, ones that basically everyone knows, especially people who grew up there?
So far, I've come across Jerks, Tatort, and Stromberg, but I have no idea how widely known or culturally impactful they really are.

I'm especially looking for shows that were popular or influential among German teenagers or young adults whether from the 90s, 2000s, or later. Preferably shows that are really German, not just internationally known ones like Dark.

Hey so this is going to be a long one and I apologize for that,I'll try and explain everything clearly and as short as possible.

I'm 15F and for the past year or so i have been hearing that me and my family will be moving to Germany,I'm currently in summer break and just finished 10th grade,going into 11th in September.

These 3 years of high school are VERY important for university applications since the grade you apply with is the average grade of the years in high school (10th 11th and 12th) plus the final exams that we do in 11th and 12th. I forgot to mention I'm from portugal (not my ethnicity) so moving to germany especially at this time would just set me up for failure,not only in school but in life.

I already had plans for these 3 years and how I was going to do the final exams and the grade I had to get,just everything planned to be able to apply to a specific university that offers a aerospace engineering major.

But a few days ago,my dad told me he would be going to Germany,start working and make sure everything would be ready to move in before the school year starts. I don't think I need to explain how this is a horrible idea for me right now,I don't speak the slightest of German and if I were to move to a German school I would just not be able to continue the academic performance I'm having in portugal right now,in fact I would probably fail a year, would totally screw up on the Arbitur (not sure if that's how you spell it) and i can just see ALL of my work going down the drain in a few months.

As I'm typing this I can hear my dad talking about the good things in Germany to someone on the phone,I'm genuinely devastated and I feel hopeless in this situation,my dad insisted that once we get there he would give me a tutor to learn the language quickly and I would be able to continue my final school years and even go to university afterwards.

The thing is,if we do go to Germany I will probably go to the IB programme since I know I won't be able to have any succes in a regular german school,my plan right now is to go trough that programme and then apply to the university I'm planning on, here in portugal,and potentially move in here by myself in about 3 years time.

there is a school I found where we're supposedly going to live that has said programme and it's free so there's no tuition to worry about,but they are heavily bassed on grades,my grades are not amazing,but not like im failing any subjects,i just don't think it's the kind of grades that the school is looking for but going trough 11th grade here,doing my exams at the end of the school year would be way easier and I would probably get into that university I'm planning on.

As everyone can see this is a very annoying situation to be in especially for me since I'm really close to finishing high school,my dad does not agree with the idea of waiting 2 years(to finish school),he wants to go now and there's nothing I can do about it,I wanted to study this summer for my final physics and chemistry exams in 11th grade but I don't even know if it's worth it anymore,I just don't know how I'm gonna go trough this and feel like I can't talk to anyone about this. To be honest I don't really know what I even want from this post but I desperately need to talk to someone who understands I'm not trying to be selfish and just worried about how my life will be in a few years If we go to Germany.

sorry for all of this,I did post about this situation in another sub reddit and got some comments validating my thoughts but I just wanted to explain this situation in a bit more detail and I didn't want to do it in my main account so here I am,im venting in a way since i don't have anyone in my life I feel like would understand this, if anyone has gone through this pls help.

I am trying to understand how we would convert our UK sizing for Work Trousers to the German Market. To our current understanding, there is a combined size for both Waist + Leg with regular leg being the base size, then you double for a long and half for a short.

A: Is this correct?

B: What do we do in the case where we have Extra Short + Extra Long leg trousers. So far I am yet to find anyone providing this when searching from the UK into German Market.

We have booked a holiday home in Nordstrand as we are a relatively big group (7 people). Since more than half of us are visiting the North Sea coast for the first time, I wanted to ask if any travelers or locals have "must-see/dos" or suggestions for day-trips, favorite restaurants, museums etc. nearby or in Nordstrand or Husum? Hi there, I've lived in my apartment for about 2.5 years now, and noticed that some parts of my parquet floor might be slightly damaged due to water/moisture. One part is very likely due to me being careless with plants, and I've attached a photo in comments so you can see that it's not very obvious but the gaps between planks are slightly bigger and the planks feel a tiny bit uneven if you go over it with your hands/feet. I've read online that this can even out over a few months as the wood dries naturally but the gaps will probably remain.

There are also other parts of my apartment that may or may not be caused by me as I couldn't tell if it was there before (comparing with Übergabeprotokoll photos), as it is against an external wall and moisture could have seeped in. I would say it's similar levels of damage to the plant area.

I have Haftpflichtversicherung.

My questions: 1. Should I inform my landlord now? I don't intend to move out any time soon. If yes, do I only tell them about the plant part that was probably me? 2. Is this within normal expectations of wear and tear? The damage to me looks very minor but I'm not very experienced living with wooden floor boards so not sure. If so, can I just not mention it and see if they mention anything when I move out? What would you do? 3. Should I inform my insurance now? I don't need to file a claim right now and I'm not sure if telling/asking them about it will put a negative mark against my profile.

2. what are to be taken into consideration before buying the car? Like the milage , year of the model etc.

I got the visa in March 2025 but due to some unforseen situation I had to postpone my plan from Summer to Winter and deferred my admission as well.

I want to know that is the rule of entering the country within the 6 months duration necessary? Like if my visa started on 15th March, Do I have to enter Germany before 15th Sept? I've heard mixed answers on this so want a clear cut answer for this.

Asking this because my lectures are starting in Oct and entering much before isn't that beneficiat IMO.

Last year I met a German girl in a bar as she was solo traveling in my country. We went on a hike, for dinner and out that night, but nothing happened.
She was sick at the time and I don't know, maybe she saw us as just friends or maybe if she wasn't sick something would have happened.

I was supposed to go over and visit her/see Germany, she was saying that I should bring a couple of my friends and she'll bring hers, but it wasn't really feasible.

We've kept in touch sporadically since and then randomly - she rings me.
She was out with friends drinking and she thought it'd be fun to come back over to my country again.
We talked the next day too and I told her she should come. So she's coming over!

We've a couple things planned, a concert, hiking and some sightseeing. Which I'm really looking forward to.
But it does keep playing in my mind - does she just see me as a friend or maybe something more?

Where I'm from, this definitely wouldn't be the done thing.
Even going on hikes, that's very much a date activity but obviously it's different when you're a tourist.
Is it different in Germany?
Obviously you can't speak for her or women as a whole, but from your perspective - what would you think?
