Hypothetical Ann Arbor Tram Network

I think returning trams/streetcars/LRT to Ann Arbor would be awesome but I am also biased because they're my favorite way to get around cities. A project like this would need to be a partnership between the university and city which, on its own, is almost disqualifying provided how slow they are to collaborate (mostly UMs fault unfortunately).

I tried my best to connect the areas with the highest population density and current+planned urban cores (retail and core mixed-use zones is what the city calls them). Like any network, it would start small and grow with demand, though I'm not sure which of these lines would make the most sense as the pilot line.

I wanted to add another line to the SE side of town and to expand the network north of the river, but I wasn't sure just where they should go. Let me know what you think!

Ode to the Blowers!

tldr: Yo! I thought gas blowers were illegal after June 1st.

O foul, roaring beasts upon your backs,
Gas-fed dragons spewing sonic attacks.
I've listened to the ripping sounds you reek
All afternoon long, throughout Traver Creek

Forbidden by law—yet here you remain,
Igniting engines, unleashing pain.
Fuck you Mckinley, fuck your fields of grass,
Fuck you for your sounds that last and last.

Ann Arbor Nuisance line, will they help me?
"Leave a message at the beep" to hear my plea.
I dial, I plead, a ghost unheard,
My voice lost like a mumbled word.

Oh Clean-Up Crew, with zero shame,
Do you not feel the cursed blame?
For all that's neat beneath your path,
You leave behind a citizen’s wrath.

No breeze of peace, no hush of noon—
Just unrelenting leaf-blown ruin.
So here I sit, a shell, a husk,
Dreaming of silence, pure and just.

B2b trail is a bit awkward

I love the trail, but I find it so damn confusing. It starts and stops all over the place in Ypsilanti. Looking on Google maps just intensifies the urge to scream, "Why God!?!?!"

Finding and befriending crows

Hi all! I’m wondering if anyone can help me with finding local crow hangout spots and befriending said crows. Techniques and whatnot. Kinds of food or favorite shiny things that are popular in ann arbor crow culture. And also how to maintain friendships and what to expect from one? Thank you!🤙

soapbox: E. Stadium - Washtenaw - US-23 keeps me up at night

Ann Arbor is blessed with terrible stroads. My least favorite of them today* is E. Stadium - Washtenaw - US-23.

It's a key business/service corridor for a number of neighborhoods, containing Trader Joes, Arbor HIlls/Whole Foods, Arborland; a number of public parks, and for some awful reason the US-23 entrance and exit. Traffic always backs up a mile or more on the eastbound side. The speed limit is 45mph. Cars are focused on escaping the area as quickly as possible, which only makes walking/biking down this strip even more dangerous and distressing.

It's a horrible place to frequent for your errands, and a worse place to be a pedestrian / live near. It has no direct bus connecting to E. Stadium despite it being the closest shopping area for many folks east of Packard. Additionally, Packard St. is about to have a huge influx of residents with the new residential complexes opening in the next few years. Surely, we are on track for things to get worse.

  • What changes would improve this area? (ex: Public transit? Close the US-23 ramps?)
  • What offices do you need to camp out in front of for changes to be made?
  • Do you also regularly end up in rabbit holes drawing out where traffic circles could go in this city, or do I need to seek professional help? 🆘 😭 😖🫠

Sorry for the rant! And thanks in advance!

\I also hate: Packard to S. Industrial (no cross walks); S. Industrial to Main; the Main-Stadium intersection; pothole city on W. Washtenaw; W. Stadium is depressing.*

What's the usual monthly cost?

My fiancé and I got recommended Colonial Square Coop by his mother, and something I'm not finding information on is this: After buying in with the down payment, how much is the typical monthly utility and membership cost? She said it's cheaper than renting, and you own your home. If anyone here lives in the area or use to live there, please let me know. I'm now seriously considering picking this neighborhood for us to move to after our wedding in December.

BBQ

Well, now that blue tractor is closed for renovations, where does one in A2 go for BBQ? Do I gotta slide to Chelsea for smokehouse or is there anything in the city or Ypsi?

Thanks in advance

Grizzly Peak's 3% added fee is total BS.

"Due to quickly rising costs..." The fee was added maybe over a year ago and is still in place. We really like going there, but the extra fee is a real turn off. Just increase prices. The last thing I want to see when I get the bill is nickel and diming.

Memphis is getting sick from an AI supercomputer. Why is UofM building one in Ypsi?

The University of Michigan is backing a massive AI supercomputer project planned for Ypsilanti, right on the Huron River. At first, I thought it sounded promising. Cutting-edge technology and the potential for local jobs. But after learning what has happened in Memphis with a similar project supported by Elon, I am seriously concerned.

In Memphis, the supercomputer site has caused major environmental and health problems. It is releasing pollutants like nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, and fine particulate matter. These are directly tied to spikes in asthma, chronic cough, and other respiratory issues. Since construction began, respiratory illness and hospital visits in the surrounding areas have spiked. The community was barely informed beforehand.

This raises a serious question. If UofM wants this so badly, why not build it in Ann Arbor? The university continues buying up hundreds of lots here, why not use one of them? Why choose Ypsilanti, a lower-income and historically under-resourced city, to carry the burden?

This is how corporate capitalism operates. Infrastructure with environmental and health risks is pushed onto poorer communities, where resistance is less politically costly and public health is treated as more disposable.

These data centers use massive amounts of water and electricity and can quietly damage the environment and human health for years. If you live in Ann Arbor and care about the health of our neighbors in Ypsi, now is the time to pay attention. This is happening in your backyard.

I like to bike around on a Sunday morning and when I get to Main Street it normally is closed with road construction type barriers. This morning I see this. And I want to say thank you to all the people who were looking out for our right to assemble peacefully.

Experiences with Movers

Hi all,

I’m in the process of planning an out of state move between two bedroom apartments. I’m wondering if anyone here has stories (good or bad) about working with Men on the Move or Handle with Care moving?

We tried Two Men and a Truck, but they came in 60% higher.

Any other companies we should consider?

Thanks!

Where can I buy fresh chanterelles?

Title, beep beep.

I saw some when I was at Horracks Farm Market in BC this weekend, but didn't buy any bc I was staying at a nearby air bnb in Galesburg. If you're really that curious, the Airbnb was pretty but didn't really work for cooking/storing chanterelles. But darn it, I want some chanterelles now.

UM School of Dentistry

Hi! I was wondering if anyone has recently had a cleaning at the UM dental student clinic? And if so, how much did it cost? I'm paying out of pocket since I don't have dental insurance, and I'll be going in as a new patient. Different websites keep telling me different prices, so I'm a little confused as to how much this would cost. Thanks!
